Fluxes, Twisted tori, Monodromy and $U(1)$ Supermembranes

We show that the $D=11$ Supermembrane theory (M2-brane) compactified on a $M_9 \times T^2$ target space, with constant fluxes $C_{\pm}$ naturally incorporates the geometrical structure of a twisted torus. We extend the M2-brane theory to a formulation on a twisted torus bundle. It is consistently fibered over the world volume of the M2-brane. It can also be interpreted as a torus bundle with a nontrivial $U(1)$ connection associated to the fluxes. The structure group $G$ is the area preserving diffeomorphisms. The torus bundle is defined in terms of the monodromy associated to the isotopy classes of symplectomorphisms with $π_{0} (G) = SL(2,Z)$, and classified by the coinvariants of the subgroups of $SL(2,Z)$. The spectrum of the theory is purely discrete since the constant flux induces a central charge on the supersymmetric algebra and a modification on the Hamiltonian which renders the spectrum discrete with finite multiplicity. The theory is invariant under symplectomorphisms connected and non connected to the identity, a result relevant to guaranteed the U-dual invariance of the theory. The Hamiltonian of the theory exhibits interesting new $U(1)$ gauge and global symmetries on the worldvolume induced by the symplectomorphim transformations. We construct explicitly the supersymmetric algebra with nontrivial central charges. We show that the zero modes decouple from the nonzero ones. The nonzero mode algebra corresponds to a massive superalgebra that preserves either $1/2$ or $1/4$ of the original supersymmetry depending on the state considered.

On the hamiltonian formulation of an octonionic integrable extension for the Korteweg-de Vries equation

We present in this work the hamiltonian formulation of an octonionic extension for the Korteweg-de Vries equation. The formulation takes into account the non commmutativity and non associativity of the implicit algebra which defines the equation. We also analize the Poisson structure of the hamiltonian formulation. We propose a parametric master Lagrangian which contains the two hamiltonian structures of the integrable octonionic equation.

The ground state of the D=11 supermembrane and matrix models on compact regions

We establish a general framework for the analysis of boundary value problems of matrix models at zero energy on compact regions. We derive existence and uniqueness of ground state wavefunctions for the mass operator of the $D=11$ regularized supermembrane theory, that is the $\mathcal{N}=16$ supersymmetric $SU(N)$ matrix model, on balls of finite radius. Our results rely on the structure of the associated Dirichlet form and a factorization in terms of the supersymmetric charges. They also rely on the polynomial structure of the potential and various other supersymmetric properties of the system.

Aspects of the T-duality construction for the Supermembrane theory

In this note we explicitly show how the generalization of the T-duality symmetry of the supermembrane theory compactified in M9xT2 can be reduced to a parabolic subgroup of SL(2,Z) that acts non-linearly on the moduli parameters and on the KK and winding charges of the supermembrane. This is a first step towards a deeper understanding of the dual relation between the parabolic type II gauged supergravity in nine dimensions.

Massless ground state for a compact SU(2) matrix model in 4D

We show the existence and uniqueness of a massless supersymmetric ground state wavefunction of a SU(2) matrix model in a bounded smooth domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions. This is a gauge system and we provide a new framework to analyze the quantum spectral properties of this class of supersymmetric matrix models subject to constraints which can be generalized for arbitrary number of colors.

Multisolitonic solutions from a Bäcklund transformation for a parametric coupled Korteweg-de Vries system

We introduce a parametric coupled KdV system which contains, for particular values of the parameter, the complex extension of the KdV equation and one of the Hirota-Satsuma integrable systems. We obtain a generalized Gardner transformation and from the associated $\varepsilon$- deformed system we get the infinite sequence of conserved quantities for the parametric coupled system. We also obtain a Bäcklund transformation for the system. We prove the associated permutability theorem corresponding to such transformation and we generate new multi-solitonic and periodic solutions for the system depending on several parameters. We show that for a wide range of the parameters the solutions obtained from the permutability theorem are regular solutions. Finally we found new multisolitonic solutions propagating on a non-trivial regular static background.

Consistent Horava gravity without extra modes and equivalent to general relativity at the linearized level

We consider a Horava theory that has a consistent structure of constraints and propagates two physical degrees of freedom. The Lagrangian includes the terms of Blas, Pujolas and Sibiryakov. The theory can be obtained from the general Horava's formulation by setting lambda = 1/3. This value of lambda is protected in the quantum formulation of the theory by the presence of a constraint. The theory has two second-class constraints that are absent for other values of lambda. They remove the extra scalar mode. There is no strong-coupling problem in this theory since there is no extra mode. We perform explicit computations on a model that put together a z = 1 term and the IR effective action. We also show that the lowest-order perturbative version of the IR effective theory has a dynamics identical to the one of linearized general relativity. Therefore, this theory is smoothly recovered at the deepest IR without discontinuities in the physical degrees of freedom.

Full hamiltonian structure for a parametric coupled Korteweg-de Vries system

We obtain the full hamiltonian structure for a parametric coupled KdV system. The coupled system arises from four different real basic lagrangians. The associated hamiltonian functionals and the corresponding Poisson structures follow from the geometry of a constrained phase space by using the Dirac approach for constrained systems. The overall algebraic structure for the system is given in terms of two pencils of Poisson structures with associated hamiltonians depending on the parameter of the Poisson pencils. The algebraic construction we present admits the most general space of observables related to the coupled system.

Hamiltonian structure of an operator valued extension of Super KdV equations

An extension of the super Korteweg-de Vries integrable system in terms of operator valued functions is obtained. In particular the extension contains the $N=1$ Super KdV and coupled systems with functions valued on a symplectic space. We introduce a Miura transformation for the extended system and obtain its hamiltonian structure. We also obtain an extended Gardner transformation which allows to find an infinite number of conserved quantities of the extended system.

Poisson structure and stability analysis of a coupled system arising from the supersymmetric breaking of Super KdV

The Poisson structure of a coupled system arising from a supersymmetric breaking of N=1 Super KdV equations is obtained. The supersymmetric breaking is implemented by introducing a Clifford algebra instead of a Grassmann algebra. The Poisson structure follows from the Dirac brackets obtained by the constraint analysis of the hamiltonian of the system. The coupled system has multisolitonic solutions. We show that the one soliton solutions are Liapunov stable.

The Hamiltonian structure of a coupled system derived from a supersymmetric breaking of Super KdV equations

A supersymmetric breaking procedure for $N=1$ Super KdV, using a Clifford algebra, is implemented. Dirac's method for the determination of constraints is used to obtain the Hamiltonian structure, via a Lagrangian, for the resulting solitonic system of coupled Korteweg-de Vries type system. It is shown that the Hamiltonian obtained by this procedure is bounded from below and in that sense represents a model which is physically admissible.

Supermembrane origin of type II gauged supergravities in 9D

The M-theory origin of the IIB gauged supergravities in nine dimensions, classified according to the inequivalent classes of monodromy, is shown to exactly corresponds to the global description of the supermembrane with central charges. The global description is a realization of the sculpting mechanism of gauging (arXiv:1107.3255) and it is associated to particular deformation of fibrations. The supermembrane with central charges may be formulated in terms of sections on symplectic torus bundles with SL(2,Z) monodromy. This global formulation corresponds to the gauging of the abelian subgroups of SL(2,Z) associated to monodromies acting on the target torus. We show the existence of the trombone symmetry in the supermembrane formulated as a non-linear realization of the SL(2,Z) symmetry and construct its gauging in terms of the supermembrane formulated on an inequivalent class of symplectic torus fibration. The supermembrane also exhibits invariance under T-duality and we find the explicit T-duality transformation. It has a natural interpretation in terms of the cohomology of the base manifold and the homology of the target torus. We conjecture that this construction also holds for the IIA origin of gauged supergravities in 9D such that the supermembrane becomes the origin of all type II supergravities in 9D. The geometric structure of the symplectic torus bundle goes beyond the classification on conjugated classes of SL(2,Z). It depends on the elements of the coinvariant group associated to the monodromy group. The possible values of the (p,q) charges on a given symplectic torus bundle are restricted to the corresponding equivalence class defining the element of the coinvariant group.

Supersymmetry breaking, conserved charges and stability in N=1 Super KdV

We analyse the non-abelian algebra and the supersymmetric cohomology associated to the local and non-local conserved charges of N=1 SKdV under Poisson brackets. We then consider the breaking of the supersymmetry and obtain an integrable model in terms of Clifford algebra valued fields. We discuss the remaining conserved charges of the new system and the stability of the solitonic solutions.

T-duality Invariance of the Supermembrane

We show that the supermembrane theory compactified on a torus is invariant under T-duality. There are two different topological sectors of the compactified supermembrane (M2) classified according to a vanishing or nonvanishing second cohomology class. We find the explicit T-duality transformation that acts locally on the supermembrane theory and we show that it is an exact symmetry of the theory. We give a global interpretation of the T-duality in terms of bundles. It has a natural description in terms of the cohomology of the base manifold and the homology of the target torus. We show that in the limit when the torus degenerate into a circle and the M2 mass operator restricts to the string-like configurations, the usual closed string T-duality transformation between the type IIA and type IIB mass operators is recovered. Moreover if we just restrict M2 mass operator to string-like configurations but we perform a generalized T-duality we find the SL(2,Z) non-perturbative multiplet of IIA.

On the Spectral properties of Multi-branes, M2 and M5 branes

In this note we summarize some of the properties found in several papers. We characterize spectral properties of the quantum mechanical hamiltonian of theories with fermionic degrees of freedom beyond semiclassical approximation. We obtain a general class of bosonic polynomial potentials for which the Schröedinger operator has a discrete spectrum. This class includes all the scalar potentials in membrane, 5-brane, p-branes, multiple M2 branes, BLG and ABJM theories. We also give a sufficient condition for discreteness of the spectrum for supersymmmetric and non supersymmetric theories with a fermionic contribution. We characterize then the spectral properties of different theories: the BMN matrix model, the supermembrane with central charges and a bound state of $N$ D2 with $m$ D0. We show that, while the first two models have a purely discrete spectrum with finite multiplicity, the latter has a continuous spectrum starting from a constant given in terms of the monopole charge.

SL(2,Z) symmetries, Supermembranes and Symplectic Torus Bundles

We give the explicit formulation of the 11D supermembrane as a symplectic torus bundle with non trivial monodromy and non vanishing Euler class. This construction allows a classification of all supermembranes showing explicitly the discrete SL(2,Z) symmetries associated to dualities. It hints as the origin in M-theory of the gauging of the effective theories associated to string theories.

A N=8 action for multiple M2-branes with an arbitrary number of colors

We obtain a U(M) action for supermembranes with central charges in the Light Cone Gauge (LCG). The theory realizes all of the symmetries and constraints of the supermembrane together with the invariance under a U(M) gauge group with M arbitrary. The worldvolume action has (LCG) N=8 supersymmetry and it corresponds to M parallel supermembranes minimally immersed on the target M9xT2 (MIM2). In order to ensure the invariance under the symmetries and to close the corresponding algebra, a star-product determined by the central charge condition is introduced. It is constructed with a nonconstant symplectic two-form where curvature terms are also present. The theory is in the strongly coupled gauge-gravity regime. At low energies, the theory enters in a decoupling limit and it is described by an ordinary N=8 SYM in the IR phase for any number of M2-branes. We analyze also other limits of the theory: when M goes to we obtain a condensate of M2-branes. If we consider, instead of the exact action, its matrix regularized version, for suitable large N but with a finite number of colors, the algebra of the first class-constraints also closes with the ordinary product and we obtain a regularized 2+1D SU(M) SYM theory in the IR phase that is coupled to the SU(N) regularized supermembrane action. The supersymmetric regularized theory with the ordinary product has purely discrete spectrum. Our theory with the star-product is a full-fledged description of multiple M2-branes minimally immersed in distinction with other constructions that represent multiple M2-branes in the low energy approximation.

Spectral analysis of polynomial potentials and its relation with ABJ/M-type theories

We obtain a general class of polynomials for which the Schrodinger operator has a discrete spectrum. This class includes all the scalar potentials in membrane, 5-brane, p-branes, multiple M2 branes, BLG and ABJM theories. We provide a proof of the discreteness of the spectrum of the associated Schrodinger operators. This a a first step in order to analyze BLG and ABJM supersymmetric theories from a non-perturbative point of view.

Discreteness of the spectrum of the compactified D=11 supermembrane with non-trivial winding

We analyze the Hamiltonian of the compactified D=11 supermembrane with non-trivial central charge in terms of the matrix model constructed recently by some of the authors. Our main result provides a rigorous proof that the quantum Hamiltonian of the supersymmetric model has compact resolvent and thus its spectrum consists of a discrete set of eigenvalues with finite multiplicity.

Supersymmetric exact sequence, heat kernel and super KdV hierarchy

We introduce the free N=1 supersymmetric derivation ring and prove the existence of an exact sequence of supersymmetric rings and linear transformations. We apply necessary and sufficient conditions arising from this exact supersymmetric sequence to obtain the essential relations between conserved quantities, gradients and the N=1 super KdV hierarchy. We combine this algebraic approach with an analytic analysis of the super heat operator. We obtain the explicit expression for the Green's function of the super heat operator in terms of a series expansion and discuss its properties. The expansion is convergent under the assumption of bounded bosonic and fermionic potentials. We show that the asymptotic expansion when $t\to0^+$ of the Green's function for the super heat operator evaluated over its diagonal generates all the members of the N=1 super KdV hierarchy.

Gerbes and Duality

We describe a global approach to the study of duality transformations between antisymmetric fields with transitions and argue that the natural geometrical setting for the approach is that of gerbes, these objects are mathematical constructions generalizing U(1) bundles and are similarly classified by quantized charges. We address the duality maps in terms of the potentials rather than on their field strengths and show the quantum equivalence between dual theories which in turn allows a rigorous proof of a generalized Dirac quantization condition on the couplings. Our approach needs the introduction of an auxiliary form satisfying a global constraint which in the case of 1-form potentials coincides with the quantization of the magnetic flux. We apply our global approach to refine the proof of the duality equivalence between d=11 supermembrane and d=10 IIA Dirichlet supermembrane.

Compactified D=11 Supermembranes and Symplectic Non-Commutative Gauge Theories

It is shown that a double compactified D=11 supermembrane with non trivial wrapping may be formulated as a symplectic non-commutative gauge theory on the world volume. The symplectic non commutative structure is intrinsically obtained from the symplectic 2-form on the world volume defined by the minimal configuration of its hamiltonian. The gauge transformations on the symplectic fibration are generated by the area preserving diffeomorphisms on the world volume. Geometrically, this gauge theory corresponds to a symplectic fibration over a compact Riemman surface with a symplectic connection.

D-branes, Symplectomorphisms and Noncommutative Gauge Theories

It is shown that the dual of the double compactified D=11 Supermembrane and a suitable compactified D=10 Super 4D-brane with nontrivial wrapping on the target space may be formulated as noncommutative gauge theories. The Poisson bracket over the world-volume is intrinsically defined in terms of the minima of the hamiltonian of the theory, which may be expressed in terms of a non degenerate 2-form. A deformation of the Poisson bracket in terms of the Moyal brackets is then performed. A noncommutative gauge theory in terms of the Moyal star bracket is obtained. It is shown that all these theories may be described in terms of symplectic connections on symplectic fibrations. The world volume being its base manifold and the (sub)group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms generate the symplectomorphisms which preserve the (infinite dimensional) Poisson bracket of the fibration.

On the spectrum of a matrix model for the D=11 supermembrane compactified on a torus with non-trivial winding

The spectrum of the Hamiltonian of the double compactified D=11 supermembrane with non-trivial central charge or equivalently the non-commutative symplectic super Maxwell theory is analyzed. In distinction to what occurs for the D=11 supermembrane in Minkowski target space where the bosonic potential presents string-like spikes which render the spectrum of the supersymmetric model continuous, we prove that the potential of the bosonic compactified membrane with non-trivial central charge is strictly positive definite and becomes infinity in all directions when the norm of the configuration space goes to infinity. This ensures that the resolvent of the bosonic Hamiltonian is compact. We find an upper bound for the asymptotic distribution of the eigenvalues.

On The spectrum of a Noncommutative Formulation of the D=11 Supermembrane with Winding

A regularized model of the double compactified D=11 supermembrane with nontrivial winding in terms of SU(N) valued maps is obtained. The condition of nontrivial winding is described in terms of a nontrivial line bundle introduced in the formulation of the compactified supermembrane. The multivalued geometrical objects of the model related to the nontrivial wrapping are described in terms of a SU(N) geometrical object which in the $ N\to \infty$ limit, converges to the symplectic connection related to the area preserving diffeomorphisms of the recently obtained non-commutative description of the compactified D=11 supermembrane.(I. Martin, J.Ovalle, A. Restuccia. 2000,2001) The SU(N) regularized canonical lagrangian is explicitly obtained. In the $ N\to \infty$ limit it converges to the lagrangian in (I.Martin, J.Ovalle, A.Restuccia. 2000,2001) subject to the nontrivial winding condition. The spectrum of the hamiltonian of the double compactified D=11 supermembrane is discussed. Generically, it contains local string like spikes with zero energy. However the sector of the theory corresponding to a principle bundle characterized by the winding number $n \neq 0$, described by the SU(N) model we propose, is shown to have no local string-like spikes and hence the spectrum of this sector should be discrete.

On the Interacting Chiral Gauge Field Theory in D=6 and the Off-Shell Equivalence of Dual Born-Infeld-Like Actions

A canonical action describing the interaction of chiral gauge fields in D=6 Minkowski space-time is constructed. In a particular partial gauge fixing it reduces to the action found by Perry and Schwarz. The additional gauge symmetries are used to show the off-shell equivalence of the dimensional reduction to D=5 Minkowski space-time of the chiral gauge field canonical action and the Born-Infeld canonical action describing an interacting D=5 Abelian vector field. Its extension to improve the on-shell equivalence arguments of dual D-brane actions to off-shell ones is discussed.

On the QFT relation between Donaldson-Witten invariants and Floer homology theory

A TQFT in terms of general gauge fixing functions is discussed. In a covariant gauge it yields the Donaldson-Witten TQFT. The theory is formulated on a generalized phase space where a simplectic structure is introduced. The Hamiltonian is expressed as the anticommutator of off-shell nilpotent BRST and anti-BRST charges. Following original ideas of Witten a time reversal operation is introduced and an inner product is defined in terms of it. A non-covariant gauge fixing is presented giving rise to a manifestly time reversal invariant Lagrangean and a positive definite Hamiltonian, with the inner product previously introduced. As a consequence, the indefiniteness problem of some of the kinetic terms of the Witten's action is resolved. The construction allows then a consistent interpretation of Floer groups in terms of the cohomology of the BRST charge which is explicitly independent of the background metric. The relation between the BRST cohomology and the ground states of the Hamiltonian is then completely stablished. The topological theories arising from the covariant, Donaldson-Witten, and non-covariant gauge fixing are shown to be quantum equivalent by using the operatorial approach.

BF Topological Theories and Infinitely Reducible Systems

We present a rigurous disscusion for abelian $BF$ theories in which the base manifold of the $U(1)$ bundle is homeomorphic to a Hilbert space. The theory has an infinte number of stages of reducibility. We specify conditions on the base manifold under which the covarinat quantization of the system can be performed unambiguously. Applications of the formulation to the superparticle and the supertstring are also discussed.

Non Abelian BF theories with sources and 2-D gravity

We study the interaction of non-Abelian topological $BF$ theories defined on two dimensional manifolds with point sources carrying non-Abelian charges. We identify the most general solution for the field equations on simply and multiply connected two-manifolds. Taking the particular choice of the so-called extended Poincaré group as the gauge group we discuss how recent discussions of two dimensional gravity models do fit in this formalism.

BRST QUANTIZATION OF NON-ABELIAN BF TOPOLOGICAL THEORIES

The off-shell nilpotent BRST charge and the BRST invariant effective action for non-abelian BF topological theories over D-dimensional manifolds are explicitly constructed. These theories have the feature of being reducible with exactly D-3 stages of reducibility. The adequate extended phase space including the different levels of ghosts for ghosts is explicitly obtained. Using the structure of the resulting BRST charge we show that for topological BF theories the semi-classical approximation completely describes the quantum theory. The independence of the partition function on the metric also follows from our explicit construction in a straightforward way.

Non-Abelian ``Self-Dual'' Massive Gauge Theory in 2+1 Dimensions

A non-abelian ``self-dual'' massive gauge theory describing a massive spin one physical mode is presented. The action is expressed in terms of two independent connections on a principle bundle over $2+1$ space-time. The kinetic terms are respectively a Chern-Simons and a $BF$ lagrangians, while the gauge invariant interaction is expressed in terms of the difference of the two connections. At the linearized level the theory is equivalent to the Topological Massive gauge theory. The covariant, $BRST$ invariant, effective action of the non-abelian sefl dual gauge theory is constructed.

Topological Sectors of Spin 1 Theories} in 2+1 Dimensions}

It is shown that the Topological Massive and ``Self-dual'' theories, which are known to provide locally equivalent descriptions of spin 1 theories in 2+1 dimensions, have different global properties when formulated over topologically non-trivial regions of space-time. The partition function of these theories, when constructed on an arbitrary Riemannian manifold, differ by a topological factor, which is equal to the partition function of the pure Chern-Simons theory. This factor is related to the space of solutions of the field equations of the Topological Massive Theory for which the connection is asymptotically flat but not gauge equivalent to zero. A new covariant, first order, gauge action, which generalize the ``Self-dual'' action, is then proposed. It is obtained by sewing local self-dual theories. Its global equivalence to the Topological Massive gauge theory is shown.
