First results of the nuGeN experiment on coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering

The nuGeN experiment is aimed to investigate neutrino properties using antineutrinos from the reactor of the Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant. The experimental setup is located at about 11 meters from the center of the 3.1 GWth reactor core. Scattering of the antineutrinos from the reactor is detected with low energy threshold high purity germanium detector. Passive and active shieldings are used to suppress all kinds of backgrounds coming from surrounding materials and cosmic radiation. The description of the experimental setup together with the first results is presented. The data taken in regimes with reactor ON (94.50 days) and reactor OFF (47.09 days) have been compared. No significant difference between spectra of two data sets is observed, i.e. no positive signals for coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering are detected. Under Standard Model assumptions about coherent neutrino scattering an upper limit on a quenching parameter k < 0.26 (90 \% C.L.) in germanium has been set.

Macroscopic properties of triplon Bose-Einstein condensates

Magnetic insulators can be characterized by a gap separating the singlet ground state from the lowest energy triplet, S=1 excitation. If the gap can be closed by the Zeeman interaction in applied magnetic field, the resulting S=1 quasiparticles, triplons, can have concentrations sufficient to undergo the Bose-Einstein condensates transition. We consider macroscopic properties of the triplon Bose-Einstein condensates in the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation taking into account the anomalous averages. We prove that these averages play the qualitative role in the condensate properties. As a result, we show that with the increase in the external magnetic field at a given temperature, the condensate demonstrates an instability related to the appearance of nonzero phonon damping and a change in the characteristic dependence of the speed of sound on the magnetic field. The calculated magnetic susceptibility diverges when the external magnetic field approaches this instability threshold, providing a tool for the experimental verification of this approach.

Quasiequilibrium Mixture of Itinerant and Localized Bose Atoms in Optical Lattice

Conditions are studied under which there can exist a quasiequilibrium mixture of itinerant and localized bosonic atoms in an optical lattice, even at zero temperature and at integer filling factor, when such a coexistence is impossible for an equilibrium lattice. The consideration is based on a model having the structure of a two-band, or two-component, boson Hubbard Hamiltonian. The minimal value for the ratio of on-site repulsion to tunneling parameter, necessary for the occurrence of such a mixture, is found.
