Backreaction of mesonic fluctuations on the axial anomaly at finite temperature

The impact of mesonic fluctuations on the restoration of the $U_A(1)$ anomaly is investigated nonperturbatively for three flavors at finite temperature in an effective model setting. Using the functional renormalization group, the dressed, fully field-dependent Kobayashi-Maskawa--'t Hooft (KMT) anomaly coupling is computed. It is found that mesonic fluctuations strengthen this signature of the $U_A(1)$ breaking as the temperature increases. On the other hand, when instanton effects are included by parametrizing the explicit temperature dependence of the bare anomaly parameter in consistency with the semiclassical result for the tunneling amplitude, a natural tendency appears diminishing the anomaly at high temperatures. As a result of the two competing effects, the dressed KMT coupling shows a well-defined intermediate strengthening behavior around the chiral (pseudo)transition temperature before the axial anomaly gets fully suppressed at high temperature. As a consequence, we conclude that below $T \sim 200 \MeV$ the $U_A(1)$ anomaly is unlikely to be effectively restored. Robustness of the conclusions against different assumptions for the temperature dependence of the bare anomaly coefficient is investigated in detail.

Interacting two-particle states in the symmetric phase of the chiral Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model

The renormalisation group flow of the chiral Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with one fermion flavor is mapped out in the symmetric phase with the help of the Functional Renormalisation Group (FRG) method using a physically motivated non-local trial effective action. The well-known infrared unstable strongly coupled fixed point characterized by a set of pointlike four-fermion couplings is reproduced. The Gaussian infrared end-point of the flow of the four-fermion couplings is now accompanied by non-zero limiting composite couplings characteristic for interacting two-particle states with finite energy and physical size. The negative interaction energy of the constituents is extracted as a function of the physical size of the composite object. This function reaches a minimum in the accessible range of physical sizes, mildly depending on the set of initial values of the couplings. The propagation of a two-particle state minimizing the interaction energy has a natural bound state interpretation.

Scalar mass stability bound in a simple Yukawa-theory from renormalisation group equations

Functional Renormalisation Group (FRG) equations are constructed for a simple Yukawa-model with discrete chiral symmetry, including also the effect of a nonzero composite fermion background beyond the conventional scalar condensate. The evolution of the effective potential of the model, generically depending on two invariants, is explored with help of power series expansions. Systematic investigation of the effect of a class of irrelevant operators on the lower (stability) bound allows a non-perturbative extension of the maximal cut-off value consistent with any given mass of the scalar field.

Non-Gaussian fixed points in fermionic field theories without auxiliary Bose-fields

The functional equation governing the renormalization flow of fermionic field theories is investigated in $d$ dimensions without introducing auxiliary Bose-fields on the example of the Gross-Neveu and the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The UV safe fixed points and the eigenvectors of the renormalization group equations linearized around them are found in the local potential approximation. The results are compared carefully with those obtained with partial bosonisation. The results do not receive any correction in the next-to-leading order approximation of the gradient expansion of the effective action.

Renormalisation Group determination of scalar mass bounds in a simple Yukawa-model

The scalar mass is determined in the simplest scalar-fermion Yukawa-model in the whole range of stability of the scalar potential. Two versions of the Functional Renormalisation Group (FRG) equations are solved, where also composite fermionic background is taken into account. The close agreement of the results with previous studies taking into account exclusively the effect of the scalar condensate, supports a rather small systematic truncation error of FRG due to the omission of higher dimensional operators.

Renormalized O(N) model at next-to-leading order of the 1/N expansion: Effects of the Landau pole

Apparently convergent contributions of resummed perturbative series at the next-to-leading order of the 1/N expansion in the O(N) model are reanalyzed in terms of renormalizability. Compared to our earlier article [G. Fejos et al., Phys. Rev. D 80, 025015 (2009)], an additional subtraction is performed. We show numerically that this is indispensable for diminishing the cutoff sensitivity of some integrals below the scale of the Landau pole. Following the method of our earlier article, an improved counterterm Lagrangian is constructed in the two-particle irreducible formalism, with and without the use of an auxiliary field formulation.

Local potential approximation for the renormalization group flow of fermionic field theories

The second functional derivative of the effective potential of pure fermionic field theories is rewritten in a factorized form which facilitates the evaluation of the renormalisation flow rate of the effective action in the Wetterich equation. It is applied to the Local Potential Approximation in cases, when the effective potential depends on scalar composites built from the fermions. The procedure is demonstrated explicitly on the example of the $N_f$-flavor Gross-Neveu model and the one-flavor chiral Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model.

Finite temperature symmetry restoration in the U_L(3)xU_R(3) linear sigma model from a large-n approximation

A recently proposed approximate large-n ground state solution of the U_L(n)xU_R(n) symmetric linear sigma model is investigated at finite temperature. We study the coupled evaporation of two condensates corresponding to the symmetry breaking pattern U_L(3)xU_R(3) -> U_V(2), realized by the ground state in certain parts of the coupling space. The region of the fluctuation induced first order transitions and its second order boundary is mapped out. The existence of a tricritical point is conjectured.

Spontaneously broken ground states of the U(n)_L x U(n)_R linear sigma model at large n

Symmetry breaking patterns of the U(n)_L x U(n)_R symmetric meson model are investigated in a formulation involving three auxiliary composite fields. The effective potential is constructed at leading order in the 1/n expansion for a condensate belonging to the center of the U(n) group. A wide region is found in the coupling space where in addition to the condensate proportional to the unit matrix, also metastable minima exist, in which a further breakdown of the diagonal U_V(n) symmetry to U_V(n-1) is realized. Application of a moderate external field conjugate to this component of the order parameter changes this state into the true ground state of the system.

A renormalized large-n solution of the U(n) x U(n) linear sigma model in the broken symmetry phase

Dyson-Schwinger equations for the U(n) x U(n) symmetric matrix sigma model reformulated with two auxiliary fields in a background breaking the symmetry to U(n) are studied in the so-called bare vertex approximation. A large n solution is constructed under the supplementary assumption so that the scalar components are much heavier than the pseudoscalars. The renormalizability of the solution is investigated by explicit construction of the counterterms.

This review provides the necessary background from astrophysics, nuclear, and particle physics to understand the cosmic origin of the chemical elements. It reflects the year 2009 state of the art in this extremely quickly developing interdisciplinary research direction. The discussion summarizes the nucleosynthetic processes in the course of the evolution of the Universe and the galaxies contained within, including primordial nucleosynthesis, stellar evolution, and explosive nucleosynthesis in single and binary systems.

Renormalized effective actions for the O(N) model at next-to-leading order of the 1/N expansion

A fully explicit renormalized quantum action functional is constructed for the O(N)-model in the auxiliary field formulation at next-to-leading order (NLO) of the 1/N expansion. Counterterms are consistently and explicitly derived for arbitrary constant vacuum expectation value of the scalar and auxiliary fields. The renormalized NLO pion propagator is exact at this order and satisfies Goldstone's theorem. Elimination of the auxiliary field sector at the level of the functional provides with order N^0 accuracy the renormalized effective action of the model in terms of the original variables. Alternative elimination of the pion and sigma propagators provides the renormalized NLO effective potential for the expectation values of the N-vector and of the auxiliary field with the same accuracy.

Non-Gaussian Finite Temperature Statistics of the Longitudinal Gauge Excitation of the Higgs Vacuum

Real time excitations in the broken symmetry phase of the classical Abelian Higgs model are investigated numerically in the unitary gauge. Persistent correlation is detected at finite energy density between the scalar and the longitudinal vector modes, the latter itself displaying non-Gaussian fluctuations. The effect diminishes when the energy density is lowered. Candidate effective mode variables are constructed by non-linear canonical point transformations. Their dispersion relations and equations of state are carefully tested.

Coupled Gap Equations for the Screening Masses in Hot SU(N) Gauge Theory

Coupled 1-loop gap equations are studied numerically for non-Abelian electric and magnetic screening in various versions of the three-dimensional effective gauge models. Corrections due to higher dimensional and non-local operators are assessed quantitatively. Comparison with numerical Monte-Carlo investigations suggests that quantitative understanding beyond the qualitative features can be achieved only by going beyond the present treatment.

Controlling a Non-Polynomial Reduced Finite Temperature Action in the U(1) Higgs Model

An effective theory is constructed for the scalar electrodynamics via 2-loop integration over all non-static fields and the screened electric component of the vector-potential. Non-polynomial terms of the action are preserved and included into the 2-loop calculation of the effective potential of the reduced theory. Also the inclusion of some non-local terms is shown to be important. The effect of non-polynomial operators on the symmetry restoring phase transition is quantitatively compared to results from a local, superrenormalisable approximate effective theory.

Effective Scalar Field Theory for the Electroweak Phase Transition

We investigate an effective model for the finite temperature restoration phase transition of the electroweak theory. It is obtained by dimensional reduction of the $3+1$ dimensional full theory and by subsequent integration over all static gauge degrees of freedom. The resulting theory corresponds to a $3$-dimensional $O(4)$ ferromagnet containing cubic and quartic terms of the field in its potential function. Possible nonperturbative effects of a magnetic screening mass are parametrically included in the potential. We analyse the theory using mean field and numerical Monte Carlo (MC) simulation methods. At the value of the physical Higgs mass, $m_H=37~{\rm GeV}$, considered in the present investigation, we find a discontinuous symmetry restoring phase transition. We determine the critical temperature, order parameter jump, interface tension and latent heat characteristics of the transition. The Monte Carlo results indicate a somewhat weaker first order phase transition as compared to the mean field treatment, demonstrating that non-perturbative fluctuations of the Higgs field are relevant. This effect is especially important for the interface tension. Any observation of hard first order transition could result only from non-perturbative effects related to the gauge degrees of freedom.
