Nature of $X(2370)$

We address the nature of the $X(2370)$ resonance observed in the $J/ψ$ radiative decays, $J/ψ\rightarrowγK^{+} K^{-}η'$, $J/ψ\rightarrowγK_S K_Sη'$ and $J/ψ\rightarrowγπ^{+}π^{-}η'$. By studying the invariant mass spectra we confirm that decays of the $X(2370)$ into three pseudo-scalars are well described by an effective chiral Lagrangian. We extract the branching ratio of $J/ψ\to X(2370)γ$ and show that it is an order of magnitude larger compared to the glueball production rate predicted by lattice QCD. This indicates that $X(2370)$ is not likely to be a glueball candidate.

Physics with CEBAF at 12 GeV and Future Opportunities

We summarize the ongoing scientific program of the 12 GeV Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) and give an outlook into future scientific opportunities. The program addresses important topics in nuclear, hadronic, and electroweak physics including nuclear femtography, meson and baryon spectroscopy, quarks and gluons in nuclei, precision tests of the standard model, and dark sector searches. Potential upgrades of CEBAF are considered, such as higher luminosity, polarized and unpolarized positron beams, and doubling the beam energy.

Pole analysis on the doubly charmed meson in $D^0D^0π^+$ mass spectrum

In this paper we study the scattering amplitudes of $D^{0}D^{0}π^+$-$D^{*+}D^{0}$ coupled channels based on $K$-matrix within the Chew-Mandelstam formalism. The $D^{0}D^{0}π^{+}$ invariant mass spectrum of LHCb is fitted and the pole parameters of the $T_{cc}^+$ are extracted. The analysis of pole behavior suggests that the $T_{cc}^+$ may originate from a $D^{*+}D^{0}$ virtual state and is formed as a result of an interplay between an attractive interaction between $D^0$ and $D^{*+}$ and coupling to $D^{0}D^0π^+$ channel.

Dalitz-plot decomposition for three-body decays

We present a general formalism to write the decay amplitude for multibody reactions with explicit separation of the rotational degrees of freedom, which are well controlled by the spin of the decay particle, and dynamic functions on the subchannel invariant masses, which require modeling. Using the three-particle kinematics we demonstrate the proposed factorization, named the Dalitz-plot decomposition. The Wigner rotations, that are subtle factors needed by the isobar modeling in the helicity framework, are simplified with the proposed decomposition. Consequently, we are able to provide them in an explicit form suitable for the general case of arbitrary spins. The only unknown model-dependent factors are the isobar lineshapes that describe the subchannel dynamics. The advantages of the new decomposition are shown through three examples relevant for the recent discovery of the exotic charmonium candidate $Z_c(4430)$, the pentaquarks $P_c$, and the intriguing $Λ_c^+\to pK^-π^+$ decay.

Exclusive tensor meson photoproduction

We study tensor meson photoproduction outside of the resonance region, at beam energies of few GeVs. We build a model based on Regge theory that includes the leading vector and axial exchanges. We consider two determinations of the unknown helicity couplings, and fit to the recent a2 photoproduction data from CLAS. Both choices give a similar description of the a2 cross section, but result in different predictions for the parity asymmetries and the f2 photoproduction cross section. We conclude that new measurements of f2 photoproduction in the forward region are needed to pin down the correct production mechanism. We also extend our predictions to the 8.5 GeV beam energy, where current experiments are running.

QCD2019 Workshop Summary

The topical workshop {\it Strong QCD from Hadron Structure Experiments} took place at Jefferson Lab from Nov. 6-9, 2019. Impressive progress in relating hadron structure observables to the strong QCD mechanisms has been achieved from the {\it ab initio} QCD description of hadron structure in a diverse array of methods in order to expose emergent phenomena via quasi-particle formation. The wealth of experimental data and the advances in hadron structure theory make it possible to gain insight into strong interaction dynamics in the regime of large quark-gluon coupling (the strong QCD regime), which will address the most challenging problems of the Standard Model on the nature of the dominant part of hadron mass, quark-gluon confinement, and the emergence of the ground and excited state hadrons, as well as atomic nuclei, from QCD. This workshop aimed to develop plans and to facilitate the future synergistic efforts between experimentalists, phenomenologists, and theorists working on studies of hadron spectroscopy and structure with the goal to connect the properties of hadrons and atomic nuclei available from data to the strong QCD dynamics underlying their emergence from QCD. These results pave the way for a future breakthrough extension in the studies of QCD with an Electron-Ion Collider in the U.S.

Khuri-Treiman equations for $3π$ decays of particles with spin

Khuri-Treiman equations have proven to be a useful theoretical tool in the analysis of 3-body decays, specially into the $3π$ final state. In this work we present in full detail the necessary generalization of the formalism to study the decays of particles with arbitrary spin, parity, and charge conjugation. To this extent, we find it most convenient to work with helicity amplitudes instead of the so-called invariant amplitudes, specially when dealing with the unitarity relations. The isobar expansions in the three possible ($s$-, $t$-, and $u$-) final channels are related with the appropriate crossing matrices. We pay special attention to the kinematical singularities and constraints of the helicity amplitudes, showing that these can be derived by means of the crossing matrix.

Phenomenology of Relativistic $\mathbf{3} \to \mathbf{3}$ Reaction Amplitudes within the Isobar Approximation

Further progress in hadron spectroscopy necessitates the phenomenological description of three particle reactions. We consider the isobar approximation, where the connected part of the $\mathbf{3}\to\mathbf{3}$ amplitude is first expressed as a sum over initial and final pairs, and then expanded into a truncated partial wave series. The resulting unitarity equation is automatically fulfilled by the $B$-matrix solution, which is an integral equation for the partial wave amplitudes, analogous to the $K$-matrix parameterization used to describe $\mathbf{2}\to\mathbf{2}$ amplitudes. We study the one particle exchange and how its analytic structure impacts rescattering solutions such as the triangle diagram. The analytic structure is compared to other parameterizations discussed in the literature. We briefly discuss the analogies with recent formalisms for extracting $\mathbf{3}\to\mathbf{3}$ scattering amplitudes in lattice QCD.

Coupled-Channel Model for $\bar{K}N$ Scattering in the Resonant Region

We present a unitary multichannel model for $\bar{K}N$ scattering in the resonance region that fulfills unitarity. It has the correct analytical properties for the amplitudes once they are extended to the complex-$s$ plane and the partial waves have the right threshold behavior. To determine the parameters of the model, we have fitted single-energy partial waves up to $J=7/2$ and up to 2.15 GeV of energy in the center-of-mass reference frame obtaining the poles of the $Λ^*$ and $Σ^*$ resonances, which are compared to previous analyses. We provide the most comprehensive picture of the $S=-1$ hyperon spectrum to date. Important differences are found between the available analyses making the gathering of further experimental information on $\bar{K}N$ scattering mandatory to make progress in the assessment of the hyperon spectrum.

Issues and Opportunities in Exotic Hadrons

The last few years have been witness to a proliferation of new results concerning heavy exotic hadrons. Experimentally, many new signals have been discovered that could be pointing towards the existence of tetraquarks, pentaquarks, and other exotic configurations of quarks and gluons. Theoretically, advances in lattice field theory techniques place us at the cusp of understanding complex coupled-channel phenomena, modelling grows more sophisticated, and effective field theories are being applied to an ever greater range of situations. It is thus an opportune time to evaluate the status of the field. In the following, a series of high priority experimental and theoretical issues concerning heavy exotic hadrons is presented.

Studying the P_c(4450) resonance in J/psi photoproduction off protons

A resonance-like structure, the P_c(4450), has recently been observed in the J/psi p spectrum by the LHCb collaboration. We discuss the feasibility of detecting this structure in J/psi photoproduction in the CLAS12 experiment at JLab. We present a first estimate of the upper limit for the branching ratio of the P_c(4450) to J/psi p. Our estimates, which take into account the experimental resolution effects, predict that it will be possible to observe a sizable cross section close to the J/psi production threshold and shed light on the P_c(4450) resonance in the future photoproduction measurements.

Dispersive Analysis of $ω/ϕ\rightarrow 3π,\,πγ^*$

The decays $ω/ϕ\rightarrow 3π$ are considered in the dispersive framework that is based on the isobar decomposition and sub-energy unitarity. The inelastic contributions are parametrized by the power series in a suitably chosen conformal variable that properly accounts for the analytic properties of the amplitude. The Dalitz plot distributions and integrated decay widths are presented. Our results indicate that the final state interactions may be sizable. As a further application of the formalism we also compute the electromagnetic transition form factors of $ω/ϕ\rightarrow π^0γ^*$.

Dispersive calculation of complex Regge trajectories for the lightest $f_2$ resonances

We apply a recently developed dispersive formalism to calculate the Regge trajectories of the $f_2(1270)$ and $f_2'(1525)$ mesons. Trajectories are calculated, not fitted to a family of resonances. Assuming that these spin-2 resonances can be treated in the elastic approximation the only input are the pole position and residue of the resonances. In both cases, the predicted Regge trajectories are almost real and linear, with slopes in agreement with the universal value of order 1 GeV$^{-2}$.

Double-Regge Exchange Limit for the $γp\rightarrow K^+K^-p$ Reaction

We apply the generalized Veneziano model ($B_5$ model) in the double-Regge exchange limit to the $γp \to K^+ K^- p$ reaction. Four different cases defined by the possible combinations of the signature factors of leading Regge exchanges (($K^*,a_2/f_2$), ($K^*,ρ/ω$), ($K_2^*,a_2/f_2$), and ($K_2^*,ρ/ω$)) have been simulated through the Monte Carlo method. Suitable event candidates for the double-Regge exchange high-energy limit were selected employing \textit{Van Hove} plots as a better alternative to kinematical cuts in the $K^+ K^- p$ Dalitz plot. In this way we predict and analyze the double-Regge contribution to the $K^+ K^- p$ Dalitz plot, which constitutes one of the major backgrounds in the search for strangeonia, hybrids and exotics using $γp\rightarrow K^+K^-p$ reaction. We expect that data currently under analysis, and that to come in the future, will allow verification of the double-Regge behavior and a better assessment of this component of the amplitude.

Non-ordinary nature of the f_0(500) resonance from its Regge trajectory

We report our results on how to obtain the Regge trajectory of a resonance from its pole in a scattering process by imposing analytic constraints in the complex angular momentum plane. The method, suited for resonances that dominate an elastic scattering amplitude, has been applied to the ρ(770) and the f_0(500) resonances. Whereas for the former we obtain a linear Regge trajectory, characteristic of ordinary quark-antiquark states, for the latter we find a non-linear trajectory with a much smaller slope at the resonance mass. Moreover, we show that if a linear trajectory with a slope of typical size is imposed for the f_0(500), the corresponding amplitude is at odds with the data. This provides a strong indication of the non-ordinary nature of the sigma meson.

Regge trajectories of ordinary and non-ordinary mesons from their scattering poles

Our results on obtaining the Regge trajectory of a resonance from its pole in a scattering process and from analytic constraints in the complex angular momentum plane are presented. The method, suited for resonances that dominate an elastic scattering amplitude, has been applied to the $ρ(770)$, $f_2(1270)$, $f_2'(1525)$ and $f_0(500)$ resonances. Whereas for the first three we obtain linear Regge trajectories, characteristic of ordinary quark-antiquark states, for the latter we find a non-linear trajectory with a much smaller slope at the resonance mass. We also show that if a linear trajectory with a slope of typical size is imposed for the $f_0(500)$, the corresponding amplitude is at odds with the data. This provides a strong indication of the non-ordinary nature of the sigma meson.

preprint2014arXiv

The non-ordinary Regge behavior of the $f_0(500)$ meson

We review how the Regge trajectory of an elastic resonance can be obtained just from its pole position and coupling, by means of a dispersive formalism. This allows to deal correctly with the finite widths of resonances in Regge trajectories. For the $ρ(770)$ meson this method leads to the ordinary linear Regge trajectory with a universal slope. In contrast, for the $f_0(500)$ meson, the resulting Regge trajectory is non-linear and with much smaller slope. This is another strong indication of the non-ordinary nature of the lightest scalar meson.

Explicit Model Realizing Parton-Hadron Duality

We present a model that realizes both resonance-Regge (Veneziano) and parton-hadron (Bloom-Gilman) duality. We first review the features of the Veneziano model and we discuss how parton-hadron duality appears in the Bloom-Gilman model. Then we review limitations of the Veneziano model, namely that the zero-width resonances in the Veneziano model violate unitarity and Mandelstam analyticity. We discuss how such problems are alleviated in models that construct dual amplitudes with Mandelstam analyticity (so-called DAMA models). We then introduce a modified DAMA model, and we discuss its properties. We present a pedagogical model for dual amplitudes and we construct the nucleon structure function F2(x,Q2). We explicitly show that the resulting structure function realizes both Veneziano and Bloom-Gilman duality.

Testing Proposals for the Yang-Mills Vacuum Wavefunctional by Measurement of the Vacuum

We review a method, suggested many years ago, to numerically measure the relative amplitudes of the true Yang-Mills vacuum wavefunctional in a finite set of lattice-regulated field configurations. The technique is applied in 2+1 dimensions to sets of abelian plane wave configurations of varying amplitude and wavelength, and sets of non-abelian constant configurations. The results are compared to the predictions of several proposed versions of the Yang-Mills vacuum wavefunctional that have appeared in the literature. These include (i) a suggestion in temporal gauge due to Greensite and Olejnik; (ii) the "new variables" wavefunction put forward by Karabali, Kim, and Nair; (iii) a hybrid proposal combining features of the temporal gauge and new variables wavefunctionals; and (iv) Coulomb gauge wavefunctionals developed by Reinhardt and co-workers, and by Szczepaniak and co-workers. We find that wavefunctionals which simplify to a "dimensional reduction" form at large scales, i.e. which have the form of a probability distribution for two-dimensional lattice gauge theory, when evaluated on long-wavelength configurations, have the optimal agreement with the data.

First measurement of direct $f_0(980)$ photoproduction on the proton

We report on the results of the first measurement of exclusive $f_0(980)$ meson photoproduction on protons for $E_γ=3.0 - 3.8$ GeV and $-t = 0.4-1.0$ GeV$^2$. Data were collected with the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The resonance was detected via its decay in the $π^+ π^-$ channel by performing a partial wave analysis of the reaction $γp \to p π^+ π^-$. Clear evidence of the $f_0(980)$ meson was found in the interference between $P$ and $S$ waves at $M_{π^+ π^-}\sim 1$ GeV. The $S$-wave differential cross section integrated in the mass range of the $f_0(980)$ was found to be a factor of 50 smaller than the cross section for the $ρ$ meson. This is the first time the $f_0(980)$ meson has been measured in a photoproduction experiment.

A search for J^{PC}=1^{-+} exotic mesons in the pi- pi- pi+ and pi- pi0 pi0 systems

A partial wave analysis (PWA) of the pi-pi-pi+ and pi-pi0pi0 systems produced in the reaction pi- p -> (3pi)-p at 18 GeV/c was carried out using an isobar model assumption. This analysis is based on 3.0M pi-pi0pi0 events and 2.6M pi-pi-pi+ events and shows production of the a2(1320), pi2(1670) and π(1800) mesons. An earlier analysis of 250K pi-pi-pi+ events from the same experiment showed possible evidence for a J^{PC}=1^{-+}$ exotic meson with a mass of 1.6 GeV/c^2 decaying into rho pi. In this analysis of a higher statistics sample of the (3pi)- system in two charged modes we find no evidence of an exotic meson.
