Can we understand an auxetic pion-photon transition form factor within QCD? BaBar faces Belle

A state-of-the-art analysis of the pion-photon transition form factor is presented based on an improved theoretical calculation that includes the effect of a finite virtuality of the quasi-real photon in the method of light-cone sum rules. We carry out a detailed statistical analysis of the existing experimental data using this method and by employing pion distribution amplitudes with up to three Gegenbauer coefficients $a_2, a_4, a_6$. Allowing for an error range in the coefficient $a_6\approx 0$, the theoretical predictions for $γ^*γ\toπ^0$ obtained with nonlocal QCD sum rules are found to be in good agreement with all data that support a scaling behavior of the transition form factor at higher $Q^2$, like those of the Belle Collaboration. The data on $γ^*γ\toη/η'$ from CLEO and \babar are also reproduced, while there is a strong conflict with the auxetic trend of the \babar data above 10 GeV$^2$. The broader implications of these findings are discussed.

Pion-photon transition form factor in light-cone sum rules

We extract constraints on the pion distribution amplitude from available data on the pion-photon transition form factor in the framework of light-cone sum rules. A pronounced discrepancy $(2.7-3)σ$ between the Gegenbauer expansion coefficients extracted from the CELLO, CLEO, and Belle experimental data relative to those from BaBar is found. Predictions for the pion-photon transition form factor are presented by employing a pion distribution amplitude obtained long ago from QCD sum rules with nonlocal condensates. These predictions comply with the Belle data but disagree with those of BaBar beyond 9 GeV$^2$.

Comparing antithetic trends of data for the pion-photon transition form factor

We perform a comparative theoretical study of the data at spacelike momentum transfer for the $γ^*γ\toπ^0$ transition form factor, just reported by the Belle Collaboration, vs. those published before by BaBar, also including the older CLEO and CELLO data. Various implications for the structure of the $π^0$ distribution amplitude vis-à-vis those data are discussed and the existing theoretical predictions are classified into three distinct categories. We argue that the actual bifurcation of the data with antithetic trends is artificial and reason that the Belle data are the better option.

Emphasizing the different trends of the existing data for the $γ^*γ\to π^0$ transition form factor

The new data on the $γ^*γ\to π^0$ transition form factor of the Belle Collaboration are analyzed in comparison with those of BaBar (including the older data of CELLO and CLEO) using an approach based on light-cone sum rules. Performing a 2-, and a 3-parametric fit to these data, we found that the Belle and the BaBar data have no overlap at the $1σ$ level. While the Belle data agree with our predictions, the Babar data are in conflict with them.

Pion-photon transition form factor using light-cone sum rules: theoretical results, expectations, and a global-data fit

A global fit to the data from different collaborations (CELLO, CLEO, BaBar) on the pion-photon transition form factor is carried out using light-cone sum rules. The analysis includes the next-to-leading QCD radiative corrections and the twist-four contributions, while the main next-to-next-to-leading term and the twist-six contribution are taken into account in the form of theoretical uncertainties. We use the information extracted from the data to investigate the pivotal characteristics of the pion distribution amplitude. This is done by dividing the data into two sets: one containing all data up to 9 GeV$^2$, whereas the other incorporates also the high-$Q^2$ tail of the BaBar data. We find that it is not possible to accommodate into the fit these BaBar data points with the same accuracy and conclude that it is difficult to explain these data in the standard scheme of OCD.

Pion-photon transition---the new QCD frontier

We perform a detailed analysis of all existing data (CELLO, CLEO, BaBar) on the pion-photon transition form factor by means of light-cone sum rules in which we include the NLO QCD radiative corrections and the twist-four contributions. The NNLO radiative correction together with the twist-six contribution are also taken into account in terms of theoretical uncertainties. Keeping only the first two Gegenbauer coefficients $a_2$ and $a_4$, we show that the $1σ$ error ellipse of all data up to 9 GeV$^2$ greatly overlaps with the set of pion distribution amplitudes obtained from nonlocal QCD sum rules---within the range of uncertainties due to twist-four. This remains valid also for the projection of the $1σ$ error ellipsoid on the $(a_2,a_4)$ plane when including $a_6$. We argue that it is not possible to accommodate the high-$Q^2$ tail of the BaBar data with the same accuracy, despite opposite claims by other authors, and conclude that the BaBar data still pose a challenge to QCD.

Higher-order QCD perturbation theory in different schemes: From FOPT to CIPT to FAPT

Results on the resummation of non-power-series expansions of the Adler function of a scalar, $D_S$, and a vector, $D_V$, correlator are presented within fractional analytic perturbation theory (FAPT). The first observable can be used to determine the decay width $Γ_{H\to b\bar{b}}$ of a scalar Higgs boson to a bottom-antibottom pair, while the second one is relevant for the $e^+e^-$ annihilation cross section. The obtained estimates are compared with those from fixed-order (FOPT) and contour-improved perturbation theory (CIPT), working out the differences. We prove that although FAPT and CIPT are conceptually different, they yield identical results. The convergence properties of these expansions are discussed and predictions are extracted for the resummed series of $R_S$ and $D_V$ using one- and two-loop coupling running, and making use of appropriate generating functions for the coefficients of the perturbative series.

Fractional Analytic Perturbation Theory in Minkowski space and application to Higgs boson decay into a b\bar{b} pair

We work out and discuss the Minkowski version of Fractional Analytic Perturbation Theory (FAPT) for QCD observables, recently developed and presented by us for the Euclidean region. The original analytic approach to QCD, initiated by Shirkov and Solovtsov, is summarized and relations to other proposals to achieve an analytic strong coupling are pointed out. The developed framework is applied to the Higgs boson decay into a b\bar{b} pair, using recent results for the massless correlator of two quark scalar currents in the \bar{MS} scheme. We present calculations for the decay width within MFAPT including those non-power-series contributions that correspond to the O(α_{s}^{3})-terms, taking also into account evolution effects of the running coupling and the b-quark-mass renormalization. Comparisons with previous results within standard QCD perturbation theory are performed and the differences are pointed out. The interplay between effects originating from the analyticity requirement and the analytic continuation from the spacelike to the timelike region and those due to the evolution of the heavy-quark mass is addressed, highlighting the differences to the conventional QCD perturbation theory.

QCD Analytic Perturbation Theory. From integer powers to any power of the running coupling

We propose a new generalized version of the QCD Analytic Perturbation Theory of Shirkov and Solovtsov for the computation of higher-order corrections in inclusive and exclusive processes. We construct non-power series expansions for the analytic images of the running coupling and its powers for any fractional (real) power and complete the linear space of these solutions by constructing the index derivative. Using the Laplace transformation in conjunction with dispersion relations, we are able to derive at the one-loop order closed-form expressions for the analytic images in terms of the Lerch function. At the two-loop order we provide approximate analytic images of products of powers of the running coupling and logarithms--typical in higher-order perturbative calculations and when including evolution effects. Moreover, we supply explicit expressions for the two-loop analytic coupling and the analytic images of its powers in terms of one-loop quantities that can strongly simplify two-loop calculations. We also show how to resum powers of the running coupling while maintaining analyticity, a procedure that captures the generic features of Sudakov resummation. The algorithmic rules to obtain analytic coupling expressions within the proposed Fractional Analytic Perturbation Theory from the standard QCD power-series expansion are supplied ready for phenomenological applications and numerical comparisons are given for illustration.

Pion form factor in QCD: From nonlocal condensates to NLO analytic perturbation theory

We present an investigation of the pion's electromagnetic form factor F_π(Q^2) in the spacelike region utilizing two new ingredients: (i) a double-humped, endpoint-suppressed pion distribution amplitude derived before via QCD sum rules with nonlocal condensates--found to comply at the 1σlevel with the CLEO data on the $πγ$ transition--and (ii) analytic perturbation theory at the level of parton amplitudes for hadronic reactions. The computation of F_π(Q^2) within this approach is performed at NLO of QCD perturbation theory (standard and analytic), including the evolution of the pion distribution amplitude at the same order. We consider the NLO corrections to the form factor in the \bar{MS} scheme with various renormalization scale settings and also in the α_V-scheme. We find that using standard perturbation theory, the size of the NLO corrections is quite sensitive to the adopted renormalization scheme and scale setting. The main results of our analysis are the following: (i) Replacing the QCD coupling and its powers by their analytic images, both dependencies are diminished and the predictions for the pion form factor are quasi scheme and scale-setting independent. (ii) The magnitude of the factorized pion form factor, calculated with the aforementioned pion distribution amplitude, is only slightly larger than the result obtained with the asymptotic one in all considered schemes. (iii) Including the soft pion form factor via local duality and ensuring the Ward identity at Q^2=0, we present predictions that are in remarkably good agreement with the existing experimental data both in trend and magnitude.

Form Factors and QCD in Spacelike and Timelike Region

We analyze the basic hard exclusive processes: πγ*γ- transition, pion and nucleon electromagnetic form factors, and discuss the analytic continuation of QCD formulas from the spacelike q^2<0 to the timelike region q^2 >0 of the relevant momentum transfers. We describe the construction of the timelike version of the coupling constant α_s. We show that due to the analytic continuation of the collinear logarithms each eigenfunction of the evolution equation acqiures a phase factor and investigate the resulting interference effects which are shown to be very small. We found no sources for the K-factor-type enhancements in the perturbative QCD contribution to the hadronic form factors. To study the soft part of the pion electromagnetic form factor, we use a QCD sum rule inspired model and show that there are non-canceling Sudakov double logarithms which result in a K-factor-type enhancement in the timelike region.

QCD vacuum tensor susceptibility and properties of transversely polarized mesons

We re-estimate the tensor susceptibility of QCD vacuum, $χ$, and to this end, we re-estimate the leptonic decay constants for transversely polarized $ρ$- ,~$ρ'$- and b_1-mesons. The origin of the susceptibility is analyzed using duality between $ρ$- and b_1- channels in a 2-point correlator of tensor currents. We confirm the results in Nucl.Phys. B283(1987)706 for the 2-point correlator of tensor currents and disagree with Phys.Lett. B395(1997)307 on both OPE expansion and the value of QCD vacuum tensor susceptibility. Using our value for the latter we determine new estimations of nucleon tensor charges related to the first moment of the transverse structure function h_1 of a nucleon.

Integral Transform Technique for Meson Wave Functions

In a recent paper [1] we have proposed a new approach for extracting the wave function of the $π$-meson $φ_π(x)$ and the masses and wave functions of its first resonances from the new QCD sum rules for non-diagonal correlators obtained in [2]. Here, we test our approach using an exactly solvable toy model as an illustrating example. We demonstrate the validity of the method and suggest a pure algebraic procedure for extracting the masses and wave functions relating to the case under investigation. We also explore the stability of the procedure under perturbations of the theoretical part of the sum rule. In application to the pion case, this results not only in the mass and wave function of the first resonance ($π'$), but also in the estimation of $π''$-mass.

QCD Sum Rules For Pion Wave Function Revisited

We analyze new QCD sum rules for the pion wave function $ϕ_π(x)$, obtained recently by A.V. Radyushkin in the framework of the non-local vacuum condensates method for non-diagonal correlators, and suggest a new approach for extracting wave functions of the $π$-meson and of its first resonances. As a result we obtain approximately the same form of the pion wave function by using two different methods and for two different ansatzes of non-local quark condensates. We predict the mass of the $π'$-resonance and obtain the form of its wave function. The first method uses integrated (in a sense) properties of ansatzes and may be considered as an alternative to traditional borel SR.
