Superfluid 3He in squeezed nematic aerogel

We present results of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments in superfluid 3He in two samples of nematic aerogel consisting of nearly parallel mullite strands. The samples were cut from the same piece of the aerogel, but one of them was squeezed by 30% in the direction transverse to the strands. In both samples the superfluid transition of 3He occurred into the polar phase, where no qualitative difference between NMR properties of 3He in these samples was found. The difference, however, has appeared on further cooling, after the transition to the polar-distorted A phase (PdA phase) with the orbital part of the order parameter in the 2D Larkin-Imry-Ma (LIM) state. In the squeezed sample the 2D LIM state is anisotropic that results in changes in the NMR, which can be used as an additional marker of the PdA phase and have allowed us to measure the value of the anisotropy.

Half-quantum vortices and walls bounded by strings in the polar-distorted phases of topological superfluid $^3$He

Symmetries of the physical world have guided formulation of fundamental laws, including relativistic quantum field theory and understanding of possible states of matter. Topological defects (TDs) often control the universal behavior of macroscopic quantum systems, while topology and broken symmetries determine allowed TDs. Taking advantage of the symmetry-breaking patterns in the phase diagram of nanoconfined superfluid $^3$He, we show that half-quantum vortices (HQVs) -- linear topological defects carrying half quantum of circulation -- survive transitions from the polar phase to other superfluid phases with polar distortion. In the polar-distorted A phase, HQV cores in 2D systems should harbor non-Abelian Majorana modes. In the polar-distorted B phase, HQVs form composite defects -- walls bounded by strings hypothesized decades ago in cosmology. Our experiments establish the superfluid phases of $^3$He in nanostructured confinement as a promising topological media for further investigations ranging from topological quantum computing to cosmology and grand unification scenarios.

Interaction of two magnetic resonance modes in polar phase of superfluid 3He

We report results of low frequency nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments in the superfluid polar phase of 3He which is stabilized by a new type of "nematic" aerogel - nafen. We have found that an interaction between transverse and longitudinal NMR modes may essentially influence the spin dynamics. Theoretical formulas for NMR resonant frequencies are derived and applied for interpretation of the experimental results.

Observation of half-quantum vortices in topological superfluid 3He

One of the most sought-after objects in topological quantum matter systems is a vortex carrying half a quantum of circulation. They were originally predicted to exist in superfluid 3He-A, but have never been resolved there. Here we report an observation of half-quantum vortices (HQVs) in the polar phase of superfluid 3He. The vortices are created with rotation or by the Kibble-Zurek mechanism and identified based on their nuclear magnetic resonance signature. This discovery provides a pathway for studies of unpaired Majorana modes bound to the HQV cores in the polar-distorted A phase.

Polar phase of superfluid 3He in anisotropic aerogel

We report the observation of a new superfluid phase of 3He -- polar phase. This phase appears in 3He confined in a new type of aerogel with nearly parallel arrangement of strands which play a role of ordered impurities. Our observations qualitatively agree with theoretical predictions and suggest that in other systems with unconventional Cooper pairing (e.g. in unconventional superconductors) similar phenomena may be found in presence of anisotropic impurities.

Spin diffusion in liquid 3He confined in nafen

We report results of spin diffusion measurements in normal phase of liquid 3He confined in nafen. Nafen is a new type of aerogel and it consists of Al2O3 strands which are nearly parallel to one another at macroscopic distances. We examine two samples of nafen with different porosities using spin echo techniques. Spin diffusion of 3He along and across the strands was measured. The aerogel alignment is clearly evident from observed spin diffusion anisotropy. A theory describing this effect is developed and compared with the experiment.

Anisotropic 2D Larkin-Imry-Ma state in polar distorted ABM phase of 3He in "nematically ordered" aerogel

We present results of experiments in superfluid phases of 3He confined in aerogel which strands are nearly parallel to one another. High temperature superfluid phases of 3He in this aerogel (ESP1 and ESP2) are chiral phases and have polar distorted ABM order parameter which orbital part forms 2D Larkin-Imry-Ma state. We demonstrate that this state can be anisotropic if the aerogel is squeezed in direction transverse to the strands. Values of this anisotropy in ESP1 and ESP2 phases are different, what leads to different NMR properties.

Phase diagram of superfluid 3He in "nematically ordered" aerogel

Results of experiments with liquid 3He immersed in a new type of aerogel are described. This aerogel consists of Al2O3 strands which are nearly parallel to each other, so we call it as a "nematically ordered" aerogel. At all used pressures a superfluid transition was observed and a superfluid phase diagram was measured. Possible structures of the observed superfluid phases are discussed.

3He NMR in porous media: Inverse Laplace transformation

For the first time the inverse Laplace transform was applied for analysis of 3He relaxation in porous media. It was shown that inverse Laplace transform gives new information about these systems. The uniform-penalty algorithm has been performed to obtain the 3He relaxation times distribution in pores of clay sample. It is possible to obtain pores' sizes distribution by using applicable model. Keywords: inverse Laplace transform, uniform-penalty algorithm, liquid 3He, 3He, He3, He-3, helium-3, pulse nuclear magnetic resonance, clay, porous media.

NMR of liquid 3He in clay pores at 1.5 K

In the present work a new method for studying porous media by nuclear magnetic resonance of liquid 3He has been proposed. This method has been demonstrated in an example of a clay mineral sample. For the first time the integral porosity of clay sample has been measured. For investigated samples the value of integral porosity is in the range of 10-30%. Inverse Laplace transform of 3He longitudinal magnetization recovery curve has been carried out, thus distribution of relaxation times T1 has been obtained.

Orbital glass and spin glass states of 3He-A in aerogel

Glass states of superfluid A-like phase of 3He in aerogel induced by random orientations of aerogel strands are investigated theoretically and experimentally. In anisotropic aerogel with stretching deformation two glass phases are observed. Both phases represent the anisotropic glass of the orbital ferromagnetic vector l -- the orbital glass (OG). The phases differ by the spin structure: the spin nematic vector d can be either in the ordered spin nematic (SN) state or in the disordered spin-glass (SG) state. The first phase (OG-SN) is formed under conventional cooling from normal 3He. The second phase (OG-SG) is metastable, being obtained by cooling through the superfluid transition temperature, when large enough resonant continuous radio-frequency excitation are applied. NMR signature of different phases allows us to measure the parameter of the global anisotropy of the orbital glass induced by deformation.
