Nurturing the Industrial Accelerator Technology Base in the US

The purpose of this white paper is to discuss the importance of having a world class domestic industrial vendor base, capable of supporting the needs of the particle accelerator facilities, and the necessary steps to support and develop such a base in the United States. The paper focuses on economic, regulatory, and policy-driven barriers and hurdles, which presently limit the depth and scope of broader industrial participation in US accelerator facilities. It discusses the international competition landscape and proposes steps to improve the strength and vitality of US industry.

Tapered helical undulator system for high efficiency energy extraction from a high brightness electron beam

In this paper we discuss the design choices and construction strategy of the tapered undulator system designed for a high energy extraction efficiency experiment in the ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic spectrum planned for installation at the Argonne National Laboratory Linac Extension Area (LEA) beamline. The undulator is comprised of 4 sections pure permanent magnet Halbach array separated by short break sections, each one of them housing a focusing quadrupole doublet and a phase shifter. The quadrupoles use a novel hybrid design which allows one to vary the gradient and match the beam transversely. The undulator tapering profile is optimized to maximize the energy conversion efficiency from a 343 MeV 1 kA beam into coherent 257.5 nm radiation taking into account the longitudinal current profile generated by the linac.

Ampère-Class Pulsed Field Emission from Carbon-Nanotube Cathodes in a Radiofrequency Resonator

Pulsed field emission from cold carbon-nanotube cathodes placed in a radiofrequency resonant cavity was observed. The cathodes were located on the backplate of a conventional $1+\frac{1}{2}$-cell resonant cavity operating at 1.3-GHz and resulted in the production of bunch train with maximum average current close to 0.7 Ampère. The measured Fowler-Nordheim characteristic, transverse emittance, and pulse duration are presented and, when possible, compared to numerical simulations. The implications of our results to high-average-current electron sources are briefly discussed.

Tunable Electron Multibunch Production in Plasma Wakefield Accelerators

Synchronized, independently tunable and focused $μ$J-class laser pulses are used to release multiple electron populations via photo-ionization inside an electron-beam driven plasma wave. By varying the laser foci in the laboratory frame and the position of the underdense photocathodes in the co-moving frame, the delays between the produced bunches and their energies are adjusted. The resulting multibunches have ultra-high quality and brightness, allowing for hitherto impossible bunch configurations such as spatially overlapping bunch populations with strictly separated energies, which opens up a new regime for light sources such as free-electron-lasers.

Transverse Beam Size Effects on Longitudinal Profile Reconstruction

The use of coherent transition radiation autocorrelation methods to determine bunch length and profile information is examined with the compressed electron beam at the BNL ATF. A bi-gaussian fit is applied to coherent transition radiation auto-correlation data to extract the longitudinal current distribution. The effects of large transverse beam sizes are studied in theory and compared to experimental results. A suitable form of the correction factor is derived for beams with large transverse-longitudinal aspect ratios.
