Mesoscopic electron focusing in topological insulators

The particle wave duality sets a fundamental correspondence between optics and quantum mechanics. Within this framework, the propagation of quasiparticles can give rise to superposition phenomena which, like for electromagnetic waves, can be described by the Huygens principle. However, the utilization of this principle by means of propagation and manipulation of quantum information is limited by the required coherence in time and space. Here we show that in topological insulators, which in their pristine form are characterized by opposite propagation directions for the two quasiparticles spin channels, mesoscopic focusing of coherent charge density oscillations can be obtained at large nested segments of constant energy contours by magnetic surface doping. Our findings provide evidence of strongly anisotropic Dirac fermion-mediated interactions. Even more remarkably, the validity of our findings goes beyond topological insulators but applies for systems with spin orbit lifted degeneracy in general. It demonstrates how spin information can be transmitted over long distances, allowing the design of experiments and devices based on coherent quantum effects in this fascinating class of materials.

Susbtrate-Induced Stabilization and Reconstruction of Zigzag Edges in Graphene Nanoislands on Ni(111)

We combine experimental observations by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT) to reveal the most stable edge structures of graphene on Ni(111) as well as the role of stacking-driven activation and suppression of edge reconstruction. Depending on the position of the outermost carbon atoms relative to hollow and on-top Ni sites, zigzag edges have very different energies. Triangular graphene nanoislands are exclusively bound by the more stable zigzag hollow edges. In hexagonal nanoislands, which are constrained by geometry to alternate zigzag hollow and zigzag top edges along their perimeter, only the hollow edge is stable whereas the top edges spontaneously reconstruct into the (57) pentagon-heptagon structure. Atomically-resolved STM images are consistent with either top-fcc or top-hcp epitaxial stacking of graphene and Ni sites, with the former being favored by DFT. Finally, we find that there is a one-to-one relationship between the edge type, graphene stacking, and orientation of the graphene islands.

Electronic and magnetic properties of molecule-metal interfaces: transition metal phthalocyanines adsorbed on Ag(100)

We present a systematic investigation of molecule-metal interactions for transition-metal phthalocyanines (TMPc, with TM = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) adsorbed on Ag(100). Scanning tunneling spectroscopy and density functional theory provide insight into the charge transfer and hybridization mechanisms of TMPc as a function of increasing occupancy of the 3d metal states. We show that all four TMPc receive approximately one electron from the substrate. Charge transfer occurs from the substrate to the molecules, inducing a charge reorganization in FePc and CoPc, while adding one electron to ligand π-orbitals in NiPc and CuPc. This has opposite consequences on the molecular magnetic moment: in FePc and CoPc the interaction with the substrate tends to reduce the TM spin, whereas in NiPc and CuPc an additional spin is induced on the aromatic Pc ligand, leaving the TM spin unperturbed. In CuPc, the presence of both TM and ligand spins leads to a triplet ground state arising from intramolecular exchange coupling between d and πelectrons. In FePc and CoPc the magnetic moment of C and N atoms is antiparallel to that of the TM. The different character and symmetry of the frontier orbitals in the TMPc series leads to varying degrees of hybridization and correlation effects, ranging from the mixed-valence (FePc, CoPc) to the Kondo regime (NiPc, CuPc). Coherent coupling between Kondo and inelastic excitations induces finite-bias Kondo resonances involving vibrational transitions in both NiPc and CuPc and triplet-singlet transitions in CuPc.

Measurement of electron wave functions and confining potentials via photoemission

Wave functions and electron potentials of laterally-confined surface states are determined experimentally by means of photoemission from stepped Au(111) surfaces. Using an iterative formalism borrowed from x-ray diffraction, we retrieve the real-space wave functions from the Fourier transform of their momentum representations, whose absolute values in turn are directly measured by angle-resolved photoemission. The effective confining potential is then obtained by introducing the wave functions into Schroedinger's equation.
