Bounds on the absorptive parts of the chromomagnetic and chromoelectric dipole moments of the top quark from LHC data

Bounds on the absorptive (imaginary) parts of the top quark chromomagnetic $\hatμ_t$ and chromoelectric $\hat{d}_t$ dipole moments are obtained by reinterpreting the most recent LHC data in top quark pair production. It is found that both limits are of the order of $10^{-1}-10^{-2}$, which are consistent with the standard model prediction of ${\rm Im}\big[\hatμ_t\big]$. The effects of the absorptive parts of the top quark dipole moments are also studied via some kinematic distributions of $\bar{t}t$ production, though no significant deviation from the standard model leading order contribution is observed. Our bounds can be useful to constrain the parameter space of standard model extensions.

New estimate of the chromomagnetic dipole moment of quarks in the standard model

A new estimate of the one loop contributions of the standard model to the chromomagnetic dipole moment (CMDM) $\hat μ_q(q^2)$ of quarks is presented with the aim to address a few disagreements arising in previous calculations. We consider the most general case with an off-shell gluon with transfer momentum $q^2$ and obtain analytical results in terms of Feynman parameter integrals and Passarino-Veltman scalar functions, which are then expressed in terms of closed form functions when possible. The calculation is done via a renormalizable linear $R_ξ$ gauge and the background field method, which allows one to corroborate that the resulting $\hat μ_q(q^2)$ is gauge independent and thus a valid observable quantity. It is found that the QCD contribution from a three-gluon Feynman diagram has an infrared divergence, which agrees with a previous evaluation and stems from the fact that the static CMDM [$\hatμ(0)$] has no sense in perturbative QCD. For the numerical analysis we consider the region 30 GeV$<\|q\|<$ 1000 GeV and analyze the behavior of $\hat μ_q(q^2)$ for all the standard model quarks. It is found that the CMDM of light quarks is considerably smaller than that of the top quark as it is directly proportional to the quark mass. In the considered energy interval, both the real and imaginary parts of $\hatμ_t(q^2)$ are of the order of $10^{-2}-10^{-3}$, with the largest contribution arising from the QCD induced diagrams, though around the threshold $q^2=4m_t^2$ there are also important contributions from diagrams with $Z$ gauge boson and Higgs boson exchange.

Sensitivity of the decay $h\to ZZ^*\to Zl+l-$ to the Higgs self coupling through radiative corrections

We study the radiative corrections induced by the triple Higgs boson coupling $hhh$ in the three body decay $h\to ZZ^*\to Zl\bar l$. We show that these corrections are potentially sensitive to the specific value of this coupling in the Standard Model and the Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM). These effects may induce corrections to the integrated decay width of the three-body decay of order few percent in the 2HDM and thus open a new window to test the Higgs boson self interaction in physics beyond the standard model.

CP-odd contributions to the $ZZ^\astγ$, $ZZγ^\ast$, and $ZZZ^\ast$ vertices induced by nondiagonal charged scalar boson couplings

In models with extended scalar sectors with several Higgs multiplets, such as Higgs triplet models, the $Z$ gauge boson can have nondiagonal couplings to charged Higgs bosons. In a model-independent way, we study the potential contributions arising from such theories to the CP-violating trilinear neutral gauge boson couplings $ZZ^*γ$, $ZZγ^*$, and $ZZZ^*$, which are parametrized by four form factors: $h^Z_{1,2}$, $f_4^γ$, and $f_4^Z$, respectively. Such form factors can only be induced if there are at least two nondegenerate charged Higgs scalars and an imaginary phase in the coupling constants. For the masses of the charged scalar bosons we consider values above 300 GeV and find that the form factors can reach the following orders of magnitude: $|h_1^Z|\sim 10^{-5}-10^{-4}$, $|h_2^Z|\sim 10^{-7}-10^{-6}$, $|f_4^γ|\sim 10^{-5}-10^{-3}$ and $|f_4^Z|\sim 10^{-6}-10^{-5}$, though there could be an additional suppression factor arising from the coupling constants. We also find that the form factors decouple at high energies and are not very sensitive to a change in the masses of the charged scalar bosons. Apart from a proportionality factor, our results for the $f_4^Z$ form factor, associated with the $ZZZ^*$ vertex, is of the same order of magnitude than that induced via nondiagonal neutral scalar boson couplings in the framework of a two-Higgs doublet model.

Gauge invariant electromagnetic properties of fermions induced by CPT violation in the Standard Model Extension

Low-energy Lorentz-invariant quantities could receive contributions from a fundamental theory producing small Lorentz-violating effects. Within the Lorentz-violating extension of quantum electrodynamics, we investigate, perturbatively, the contributions to the one-loop $ffγ$ vertex from the $CPT$-violating axial coupling of a vector background field to fermions. We find that the resulting vertex function has a larger set of Lorentz structures than the one characterizing the usual, Lorentz invariant, parametrization of the $ffγ$ vertex. We prove gauge invariance of the resulting one-loop expression through a set of gauge invariant nonrenormalizable operators introducing new-physics effects at the first and second orders in Lorentz violation, and which generate tree-level contributions to the $ffγ$ vertex. Whereas loop contributions involving parameters that violate Lorentz invariance at the first order are $CPT$-odd, those arising at the second order are $CPT$-even, so that contributions to low-energy physics are restricted to emerge for the first time at the second order. In this context, we derive a contribution to anomalous magnetic moment of fermions, which we use to set a bound on Lorentz violation.

One-loop nonbirefringent effects on the electromagnetic vertex in the Standard Model Extension

Lorentz violation emerged from a fundamental description of nature may impact, at low energies, the Maxwell sector, so that contributions from such new physics to the electromagnetic vertex would be induced. Particularly, nonbirefringent $CPT$-even effects from the electromagnetic sector modified by the Lorentz- and $CPT$-violating Standard Model Extension alter the structure of the free photon propagator. We calculate Lorentz-violating contributions to the electromagnetic vertex, at the one-loop level, by using a modified photon propagator carrying this sort of effects. We take the photon off shell, and find an expression that involves both isotropic and anisotropic effects of nonbirefringent violation of Lorentz invariance. Our analysis of the one-loop vertex function includes gauge invariance, transformation properties under $C$, $P$, and $T$, and tree-level contributions from Lorentz-violating nonrenormalizable interactions. These elements add to previous studies of the one-loop contributions to the electromagnetic vertex in the context of Lorentz violation in the photon sector. Finally, we restrict our analysis to the isotropic case and derive a finite contribution from isotropic Lorentz violation to the anomalous magnetic moment of fermions that coincides with the result already reported in the literature.

Static weak dipole moments of the $τ$ lepton via renormalizable scalar leptoquark interactions

The weak dipole moments of elementary fermions are calculated at the one-loop level in the framework of a renormalizable scalar leptoquark model that forbids baryon number violating processes and so is free from the strong constraints from experimental data. In this model there are two scalar leptoquarks accommodated in an $SU_L(2)\times U_Y(1)$ doublet: one of such leptoquarks is non-chiral and has electric charge of $5/3e$, whereas the other one is chiral and has electric charge $2/3e$. In particular, a non-chiral leptoquark contributes to the weak properties of an up fermion via a chirality flipping-term proportional to the mass of the virtual fermion and can also induce a non-zero weak electric dipole moment provided that the leptoquark couplings are complex. The numerical analysis is focused on the weak properties of the $τ$ lepton since they offer good prospects for their experimental study. The constraints on leptoquark couplings are briefly discussed for a non-chiral leptoquark with non diagonal couplings to the second and third fermion generations, a third-generation non-chiral leptoquark, and a third-generation chiral leptoquark. It is found that although the chirality-flipping term can enhance the weak properties of the $τ$ lepton via the top quark contribution, such an enhancement would be offset by the strong constraints on the leptoquark couplings. So, the contribution of scalar leptoquarks to the weak magnetic dipole moment of the $τ$ lepton are smaller than the standard model (SM) contributions but can be of similar size than those arising in some SM extensions. A non-chiral leptoquark can also give contributions to the weak electric dipole moment larger than the SM one but well below the experimental limit. We also discuss the case of the off-shell weak dipole moments and for completeness analyze the behavior of the $τ$ electromagnetic properties.

Analysis of mu-tau conversion through μN -> τX deep inelastic scattering induced by unparticles

A study of mu-tau conversion via the deep inelastic scattering process μN -> τX, with N a nucleon, is performed taking into account the effects from both spin-0 and spin-1 unparticles with lepton flavor violating (LFV) couplings. This process has attracted attention in the past as it may be at the reach of a future neutrino or muon factory. For the model parameters, we use the most recent constraints on the unparticle LFV couplings from the experimental limits on the muon anomalous magnetic moment and the LFV decay τ-> 3μ, whereas for the unparticle scale Λ_U and scale dimension d_U we use the bounds obtained from the search for mono-jets plus missing transverse energy at the LHC. The μN -> τX cross section is analyzed when the target is a proton and it is found that the unparticle effects can be larger than the contribution from Higgs exchange in the minimal supersymmetric standard model. We also analyze the behavior of the angular and energy distributions of the emitted tau lepton, which could be used to disentangle among distinct new physics contributions. It is found that, for a beam with an intensity of 10^20 muons with an energy around 50 GeV on a 10^2 gr/cm^2 mass target annually, there would be about 10^2-10^3 μN -> τX events per year. The potential background is discussed briefly.

CP violating anomalous tau lepton coupling $\barττV$ via a spin-0 unparticle

The tau is the only known lepton that can decay hadronically. From this class of decays, high precision measurements of several quantities can be extracted: the CKM matrix element $V_{us}$, the mass of the strange quark, etc. Also, as a result of its large variety of decay channels, the study of the tau lepton represents an interesting tool to search for CP violation and other new physics effects. In this work, a spin-0 unparticle is considered and its contributions to the electromagnetic and weak properties of the tau lepton are calculated. It is found that such contributions can be greater than the standard model (SM) contributions, though they can be of similar order of magnitude than the contributions from other SM extensions, such as an extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model with vectorlike multiplets. For the unparticles parameters, the most recent CMS bound from mono-jet production plus missing transverse energy at the LHC are considered.

Weak properties of the tau lepton via a spin-0 unparticle

We consider a spin-0 unparticle and calculate its contribution to the weak properties of a fermion, which in the proper limit reduce to previously reported results for the electromagnetic properties. We then obtain an estimate for the electromagnetic and weak properties of the tau lepton. For the unparticle parameters, we consider the most recent bounds from the lepton flavor violating decay tau -> 3 mu, the muon anomalous magnetic moment, and the data for monojet production plus missing transverse energy at the LHC. In the most promising promising scenario, it is found that the unparticle contributions to the tau electromagnetic properties can be larger than the contributions predicted by the standard model (SM) and some of its extensions, such as the SeeSaw model and extensions of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) with a mirror fourth generation and vectorlike multiplets. As for the contributions to the weak properties, they are larger than the SM contributions but are much smaller than the current experimental limits. We also discuss the case of the electromagnetic and weak properties of the bottom and top quarks.

Lepton electric and magnetic dipole moments via lepton flavor violating spin-1 unparticle interactions

The magnetic dipole moment (MDM) and the electric dipole moment (EDM) of leptons are calculated under the assumption of lepton flavor violation (LFV) induced by spin-1 unparticles with both vector and axial-vector couplings to leptons, including a CP-violating phase. The experimental limits on the muon MDM and LFV process such as the decay l_i->i_jl_kl_k are then used to constrain the LFV couplings for particular values of the unparticle operator dimension d_U and the unparticle scale Λ_U, assuming that LFV transitions between the tau and muon leptons are dominant. It is found that the current experimental constraints favor a scenario with dominance of the vector couplings over the axial-vector couplings. We also obtain estimates for the EDMs of the electron and the muon, which are well below the current experimental limits.

Lepton flavor violating decay Z-> l_i l_j in the 331 model

We study the lepton flavor violating (LFV) decays Z-> l_i l_j (l_{i,j}=e,μ,τ) in the framework of the minimal 331 model. The main contributions arise at the one-loop level via a doubly charged bilepton with general LFV couplings. We obtain an estimate for the corresponding branching ratios by using the bounds on the LFV couplings of the doubly charged bilepton from the current experimental limits on the decays l_i-> l_jγand l_i-> l_j l_k l_k. A bound on the bilepton mass is also obtained through the current limit on the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. It is found that the bilepton contributions to LFV Z decays are not expected to be at the reach of experimental detection. In particular, the branching ratio for the Z-> μτdecay is below the 10^{-10} level for a bilepton mass of the order of 500 GeV.

On-shell $WWγ$ vertex in the T-Parity and non T-Parity Littlest Higgs model

The static electromagnetic properties of the $W$ boson, $Δκ$ and $ΔQ$, are calculated in the T-parity and non T-parity littlest Higgs model (LHM) including terms up to the order of $(v/f)^4$, with $v$ the standard model (SM) vacuum expectation value and $f$ the scale of the global symmetry breaking. There are contributions from the virtual effects of the new heavy particles and also from the new corrections to the SM vertices, which depend on the mixing parameter $c$ and decrease quickly as $f$ increases. Depending on the value of $c$, the partial contributions to $Δκ$ and $ΔQ$ can add constructively or destructively. The terms of the order of $(v/f)^4$ are subdominant but they can add constructively and can enhance the $W$ form factors for $f < 1$ TeV. In general the size of the $W$ form factors is very suppressed in the LHM without T-parity as the constraints on the scale $f$ from electroweak precision measurements are very tight. The LHM with T-parity has no such constraints and it allows for values of $W$ form factors similar to those found in other weakly coupled SM extensions, though they are out of the expected sensitivity of future measurements at the LHC. We also discuss the possibility that there is some enhancement due to the interactions arising from the strongly interacting ultraviolet completion of the LHM.
