The $S_3$ flavour symmetry: Neutrino masses and mixings

We discuss the neutrino masses and mixings as the realization of an $S_{3}$ flavour permutational symmetry in two models, namely the Standard Model and an extension of the Standard Model with three Higgs doublets. In the $S_3$ Standard Model, mass matrices of the same generic form are obtained for the neutrinos and charged leptons when the $S_{3}$ flavour symmetry is broken sequentially. In the minimal $S_{3}$-symmetric extension of the Standard Model, the $S_3$ symmetry is left unbroken, and the concept of flavour is extended to the Higgs sector by introducing in the theory three Higgs fields which are SU(2) doublets. In both models, the mass matrices of the neutrino and charged leptons are reparametrized in terms of their eigenvalues, and exact, explicit analytical expressions for the neutrino mixing angles as functions of the masses of neutrinos and charged leptons are obtained. In the case of the $S_3$ Standard Model, from a $χ^{2}$ fit of the theoretical expressions of the lepton mixing matrix to the values extracted from experiment, the numerical values of the neutrino mixing angles are obtained in excellent agreement with experimental data. In the $S_3$ extension of the Standard Model, if two of the right handed neutrinos masses are degenerate, the reactor and atmospheric mixing angles are determined by the masses of the charged leptons, yielding $θ_{23}$ in excellent agreement with experimental data, and $θ_{13}$ different from zero but very small. If the masses of the three right handed neutrinos are assumed to be different, then it is possible to get $θ_{13}$ also in very good agreement with experimental data. We also show the branching ratios of some selected flavour changing neutral currents (FCNC) process as well as the contribution of the exchange of a neutral flavour changing scalar to the anomaly of the magnetic moment of the muon.

Universal Mass Texture, CP violation and Quark-Lepton Complementarity

The measurements of the neutrino and quark mixing angles satisfy the empirical relations called Quark-Lepton Complementarity. These empirical relations suggest the existence of a correlation between the mixing matrices of leptons and quarks. In this work, we examine the possibility that this correlation between the mixing angles of quarks and leptons originates in the similar hierarchy of quarks and charged lepton masses and the seesaw mechanism type~I, that gives mass to the Majorana neutrinos. We assume that the similar mass hierarchies of charged lepton and quark masses allows us to represent all the mass matrices of Dirac fermions in terms of a universal form with four texture zeroes.

Lepton flavour violating processes in an S_3-symmetric model

A variety of lepton flavour violating effects related to the recent discovery of neutrino oscillations and mixings is here systematically discussed in terms of an S_3-flavour permutational symmetry. After presenting some relevant results on lepton masses and mixings, previously derived in a minimal S_3-invariant extension of the Standard Model, we compute the branching ratios of some selected flavour-changing neutral current processes (FCNC) as well as the contribution of the exchange of neutral flavour-changing scalar to the anomaly of the magnetic moment of the muon. We found that the minimal S_3-invariant extension of the Standard Model describes successfully masses and mixings, as well as, all flavour changing neutral current processes in excellent agreement with experiment.

Models of flavour with discrete symmetries

We briefly review some recent developments in theoretical models of fermion masses, mixings and CP violation with discrete non-Abelian symmetries. Then, we explain the main ideas of a recently proposed Minimal S_3 Invariant Extension of the Standard Model and its application to a unified analysis of masses, mixings and CP violation in the leptonic and quark sectors as well as the explicit computation of the V_PMNS and V_CKM mixing matrices.

The Flavor Symmetry

Assuming that the lepton, quark and Higgs fields belong to the three-dimensional reducible representation of the permutation group S_3, we suggest a minimal S_3 invariant extension of the standard model. We find that in the leptonic sector, the exact S_3 x Z_2 symmetry, which allows 6 real independent parameters with two CP-violating phases, is consistent with experimental data and predicts a maximal mixing of the atmospheric neutrinos, and that the third neutrino is the lightest neutrino. With the exact S_3 only, there are 10 real parameters and five phases in the quark sector. A set of values of these parameters that are consistent with experimental observations is given.

CP violating phase and quark mixing angles from flavour permutational symmetry breaking

The phase equivalence of the theoretical quark mixing matrix ${\bf V}^{th}$ derived from the breaking of the flavour permutational symmetry and the phenomenological parametrizations ${\bf V}^{PDG}$ and ${\bf V}^{KM}$ is explicitly exhibited. From here, we derive exact explicit expressions for the three mixing angles and the CP violating phase of the two phenomenological parametrizations in terms of the quark mass ratios $(m_{u}/m_{t}, m_{c}/m_{t}, m_{d}/m_{b}, m_{s}/m_{b})$ and the parameters $Z^{*1/2}$ and $Φ^*$ characterizing the preferred symmetry breaking pattern. The computed values for the CP violating phase and the mixing angles of the standard parametrization advocated by the Particle Data Group are $δ^*_{13}=73.2^\circ$, $\sinθ^*_{12}=0.222$, $\sinθ^*_{13}=0.0036$, and $\sinθ^*_{23}=0.040$. The computed values of the CP-violating phase and the mixing angles of the Kobayashi-Maskawa parametrization are $δ^*_{KM}=96.4^\circ$, $\sinθ^*_{1}=0.2225$, $\sinθ^*_{2}=0.0384$, and $\sinθ^*_{3}=0.0162$. In both cases, the numerical values of the mixing angles and CP-violating phase computed from quark masses and the flavour symmetry breaking parameters coincide almost exactly with the central values of the same parameters obtained from a fit to experimental data.
