A note on the generalized-hypergeometric solutions of general and single-confluent Heun equations

We review the series solutions of the general and single-confluent Heun equations in terms of powers, ordinary-hypergeometric and confluent-hypergeometric functions. The conditions under which the expansions reduce to finite sums as well as the cases when the coefficients of power-series expansions obey two-term recurrence relations are discussed. Infinitely many cases for which a solution of a general or single-confluent Heun equation is written through a single generalized hypergeometric function are indicated. It is shown that the parameters of this generalized hypergeometric function are the roots of a certain polynomial equation, which we explicitly present for any given order.

Comment on the paper "Third-harmonic generation investigated by a short-range bottomless exponential potential well" by M. Hu, K. Guo, Q. Yu, Z. Zhang [Superlattices and Microstructures, 122 (2018) 538-547]

We have discovered several severe errors in the recent paper M. Hu, K. Guo, Q. Yu, Z. Zhang [Superlattices and Microstructures, 122 (2018) 538-547]. Specifically, we demonstrate that both the solution of the Schrödinger equation and the bound-state wave functions used in the paper are incorrect.

Exact solution of the 1D Dirac equation for the inverse-square-root potential $1/\sqrt{x}$

We present the exact solution of the 1D Dirac equation for the inverse-square-root potential $1/\sqrt{x}$ for several configurations of vector, pseudo-scalar and scalar fields. Each fundamental solution of the problem can be written as an irreducible linear combination of two Hermite functions of a scaled and shifted argument. We derive the exact equations for bound-state energy eigenvalues and construct accurate approximations for the energy spectrum.

Exactly-solvable quantum systems in terms of Lambert-W functions

We construct a variety of new exactly-solvable quantum systems, the potentials of which are given in terms of Lambert-W functions. In particular, we generate Schrödinger models with energy-dependent potentials, conventional Schrödinger models using the supersymmetry formalism, and two-dimensional Dirac systems. In addition, we derive Wronskian integral formulas for Lambert-W functions.

Hermite function solutions of the Schrödinger equation for the sextic oscillator

We examine the conditions under which the solution of the radial stationary Schrödinger equation for the sextic anharmonic oscillator can be expanded in terms of Hermite functions. We find that this is possible for an infinite hierarchy of potentials discriminated by the parameter setting the strength of the centrifugal barrier. The $N$'th member of the hierarchy involves $N$ solutions for $N$ generally different values of the energy. For a particular member of the hierarchy, there exist infinitely many bound states with square integrable wave functions, written in terms of the Hermite functions, which vanish at the origin and at infinity. These bound states correspond to distinct values of the parameter setting the strength of the harmonic term. We also investigate connection with the polynomial solutions of the sextic oscillator obtained from the formalism of quasi-exactly solvable potentials.

Inverse square root level-crossing quantum two-state model

We introduce a new unconditionally solvable level-crossing two-state model given by a constant-amplitude optical field configuration for which the detuning is an inverse-square-root function of time. This is a member of one of the five families of bi-confluent Heun models. We prove that this is the only non-classical exactly solvable field configuration among the bi-confluent Heun classes, solvable in terms of finite sums of the Hermite functions. The general solution of the two-state problem for this model is written in terms of four Hermite functions of a shifted and scaled argument (each of the two fundamental solutions presents an irreducible combination of two Hermite functions). We present the general solution, rewrite it in terms of more familiar physical quantities and analyze the time dynamics of a quantum system subject to excitation by a laser field of this configuration.

A conditionally exactly solvable generalization of the inverse square root potential

We present a conditionally exactly solvable singular potential for the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation which involves the exactly solvable inverse square root potential. Each of the two fundamental solutions that compose the general solution of the problem is given by a linear combination with non-constant coefficients of two confluent hypergeometric functions. Discussing the bound-state wave functions vanishing both at infinity and in the origin, we derive the exact equation for the energy spectrum which is written using two Hermite functions of non-integer order. In specific auxiliary variables this equation becomes a mathematical equation that does not refer to a specific physical context discussed. In the two-dimensional space of these auxiliary variables the roots of this equation draw a countable infinite set of open curves with hyperbolic asymptotes. We present an analytic description of these curves by a transcendental algebraic equation for the involved variables. The intersections of the curves thus constructed with a certain cubic curve provide a highly accurate description of the energy spectrum.

A singular Lambert-W Schrödinger potential exactly solvable in terms of the confluent hypergeometric functions

We introduce two potentials explicitly given by the Lambert-W function for which the exact solution of the one-dimensional stationary Schrödinger equation is written through the first derivative of a double-confluent Heun function. One of these potentials is a singular potential that behaves as the inverse square root in the vicinity of the origin and vanishes exponentially at the infinity. The exact solution of the Schrödinger equation for this potential is given through fundamental solutions each of which presents an irreducible linear combination of two confluent hypergeometric functions. Since the potential is effectively a short-range one it supports only a finite number of bound states.

Expansions of the solutions of the biconfluent Heun equation in terms of incomplete Beta and Gamma functions

Starting from equations obeyed by functions involving the first or the second derivatives of the biconfluent Heun function, we construct two expansions of the solutions of the biconfluent Heun equation in terms of incomplete Beta functions. The first series applies single Beta functions as expansion functions, while the second one involves a combination of two Beta functions. The coefficients of expansions obey four- and five-term recurrence relations, respectively. It is shown that the proposed technique is potent to produce series solutions in terms of other special functions. Two examples of such expansions in terms of the incomplete Gamma functions are presented

The third exactly solvable hypergeometric quantum-mechanical potential

We introduce the third independent exactly solvable hypergeometric potential, after the Eckart and the Pöschl-Teller potentials, which is proportional to an energy-independent parameter and has a shape that is independent of this parameter. The general solution of the Schrödinger equation for this potential is written through fundamental solutions each of which presents an irreducible combination of two Gauss hypergeometric functions. The potential is an asymmetric step-barrier with variable height and steepness. Discussing the transmission above such a barrier, we derive a compact formula for the reflection coefficient.

A series solution of the general Heun equation in terms of incomplete Beta functions

We show that in the particular case when a characteristic exponent of the singularity at infinity is zero the solution of the general Heun equation can be expanded in terms of the incomplete Beta functions. By means of termination of the series, closed-form solutions are derived for two infinite sets of the involved parameters. These finite-sum solutions are written in terms of elementary functions that in general are quasi-polynomials. The coefficients of the expansion obey a three-term recurrence relation, which in some particular cases may become two-term. We discuss the case when the recurrence relation involves two non-successive terms and show that the coefficients of the expansion are then calculated explicitly and the general solution of the Heun equation is constructed as a combination of several hypergeometric functions with quasi-polynomial pre-factors.

Adiabatic asymmetric scattering of atoms in the field of a standing wave

A model of the asymmetric coherent scattering process (caused by initial atomic wave-packet splitting in the momentum space) taking place at the large detuning and adiabatic course of interaction for an effective two-state system interacting with a standing wave of laser radiation is discussed. We show that the same form of initial wave-packet splitting may lead to different, in general, diffraction patterns for opposite, adiabatic and resonant, regimes of the standing-wave scattering. We show that the scattering of the Gaussian wave packet in the adiabatic case presents refraction (a limiting form of the asymmetric scattering) in contrast to the bi-refringence (the limiting case of the high-order narrowed scattering) occurring in the resonant scattering.

Analytic solutions of the quantum two-state problem in terms of the double-, bi- and tri-confluent Heun functions

We derive five classes of quantum time-dependent two-state models solvable in terms of the double confluent Heun functions, five other classes solvable in terms of the biconfluent Heun functions, and a class solvable in terms of the triconfluent Heun functions. These classes generalize all the known families of two- or three-parametric models solvable in terms of the confluent hypergeometric functions to more general four-parametric classes involving three-parametric detuning modulation functions. The particular models derived describe different non-linear (parabolic, cubic, sinh, cosh, etc.) level-sweeping or level-glancing processes, double- or triple-level-crossing processes, as well as periodically repeated resonance-glancing or resonance-crossing processes. We show that more classes can be derived using the equations obeyed by certain functions involving the derivatives of the confluent Heun functions. We present an example of such a class for each of the three discussed confluent Heun equations.

Exact solution of the Schrödinger equation for the inverse square root potential $V_0/{\sqrt{x}}$

We present the exact solution of the stationary Schrödinger equation equation for the potential $V=V_0/{\sqrt{x}}$. Each of the two fundamental solutions that compose the general solution of the problem is given by a combination with non-constant coefficients of two confluent hypergeometric functions of a shifted argument. Alternatively, the solution is written through the first derivative of a tri-confluent Heun function. Apart from the quasi-polynomial solutions provided by the energy specification $E_n=E_1{n^{-2/3}}$, we discuss the bound-state wave functions vanishing both at infinity and in the origin. The exact spectrum equation involves two Hermite functions of non-integer order which are not polynomials. An accurate approximation for the spectrum providing a relative error less than $10^{-3}$ is $E_n=E_1{(n-1/(2 π))^{-2/3}}$ . Each of the wave functions of bound states in general involves a combination with non-constant coefficients of two confluent hypergeometric and two non-integer order Hermite functions of a scaled and shifted coordinate.

Expansions of the solutions of the confluent Heun equation in terms of the incomplete Beta and the Appell generalized hypergeometric functions

We construct several expansions of the solutions of the confluent Heun equation in terms of the incomplete Beta functions and the Appell generalized hypergeometric functions of two variables of the fist kind. The coefficients of different expansions obey four-, five-, or six-term recurrence relations that are reduced to ones involving less number of terms only in a few exceptional cases. The conditions for deriving finite-sum solutions via termination of the series are discussed.

Four five-parametric and five four-parametric independent confluent Heun potentials for the stationary Klein-Gordon equation

We present in total fifteen potentials for which the stationary Klein-Gordon equation is solvable in terms of the confluent Heun functions. Because of the symmetry of the confluent Heun equation with respect to the transposition of its regular singularities, only nine of the potentials are independent. Four of these independent potentials are five-parametric. One of them possesses a four-parametric ordinary hypergeometric sub-potential, another one possesses a four-parametric confluent hypergeometric sub-potential, and one potential possesses four-parametric sub-potentials of both hypergeometric types. The fourth five-parametric potential has a three-parametric confluent hypergeometric sub-potential, which is, however, only conditionally integrable. The remaining five independent Heun potentials are four-parametric and have solutions only in terms of irreducible confluent Heun functions.

Non-exponential Auger decay

We discuss the possibility of non-exponential Auger decay of atoms irradiated by X-ray photons. This effect can occur at times, which are greater than the lifetime of a system under consideration. The mechanism for non-exponential depletion of an initial quasi-stationary state is the cutting of the electron energy spectrum of final continuous states at small energies. Then the Auger decay amplitude obeys power-law dependence on long observation times.

Non-exponential tunneling ionization of atoms by an intense laser field

We discuss the possibility of non-exponential tunneling ionization of atoms irradiated by intense laser field. This effect can occur at times, which are greater than the lifetime of a system under consideration. The mechanism for non-exponential depletion of an initial quasi-stationary state is the cutting of the energy spectrum of final continuous states at long times. We first consider the known examples of cold emission of electrons from metal, tunneling alpha-decay of atomic nuclei, spontaneous decay in two-level systems and the single-photon atomic ionization by a weak electromagnetic field. The new physical situation discussed is tunneling ionization of atoms by a strong low-frequency electromagnetic field. In this case the decay obeys ~1/t power-law dependence on the (long) interaction times.

Spin 1 particle in the magnetic monopole potential, nonrelativistic approximation. Minkowski and Lobachevski spaces

The spin 1 particle is treated in the presence of the Dirac magnetic monopole in the Minkowski and Lobachevsky spaces. Separating the variables in the frame of the matrix 10-component Duffin-Kemer-Petiau approach (wave equation) and making a nonrelativistic approximation in the corresponding radial equations, a system of three coupled second order linear differential equations is derived for each type of geometry. For the Minkowski space, the nonrelativistic equations are disconnected using a linear transformation, which makes the mixing matrix diagonal. The resultant three unconnected equations involve three routs of a cubic algebraic equation as parameters. The approach allows extension to the case of additional external spherically symmetric fields. The Coulomb and oscillator potentials are considered and for each of these cases three series of energy spectra are derived. A special attention is given to the states with minimum value of the total angular momentum. In the case of the curved background of the Lobachevsky geometry, the mentioned linear transformation does not disconnect the nonrelativistic equations in the presence of the monopole. Nevertheless, we derive the solution of the problem in the case of minimum total angular momentum. In this case, we additionally involve a Coulomb or oscillator field. Finally, considering the case without the monopole field, we show that for both Coulomb and oscillator potentials the problem is reduced to a system of three differential equations involving a hypergeometric and two general Heun equations. Imposing on the parameters of the latter equations a specific requirement, reasonable from the physical standpoint, we derive the corresponding energy spectra.

The Lambert-W step-potential - an exactly solvable confluent hypergeometric potential

We present an asymmetric step-barrier potential for which the one-dimensional stationary Schrödinger equation is exactly solved in terms of the confluent hypergeometric functions. The potential is given in terms of the Lambert -function, which is an implicitly elementary function also known as the product logarithm. We present the general solution of the problem and consider the quantum reflection at transmission of a particle above this potential barrier. Compared with the abrupt-step and hyperbolic tangent potentials, which are reproduced by the Lambert potential in certain parameter and/or variable variation regions, the reflection coefficient is smaller because of the lesser steepness of the potential on the particle incidence side. Presenting the derivation of the Lambert potential we show that this is a four-parametric sub-potential of a more general five-parametric one also solvable in terms of the confluent hypergeometric functions. The latter potential, however, is a conditionally integrable one. Finally, we show that there exists one more potential the solution for which is written in terms of the derivative of a bi-confluent Heun function.

Thirty five classes of solutions of the quantum time-dependent two-state problem in terms of the general Heun functions

We derive 35 five-parametric classes of the quantum time-dependent two-state models solvable in terms of the general Heun functions. Each of the classes is defined by a pair of generating functions the first of which is referred to as the amplitude- and the second one as the detuning-modulation function. The classes suggest numerous families of specific field configurations with different physical properties generated by appropriate choices of the transformation of the independent variable, real or complex. There are many families of models with constant detuning or constant amplitude, numerous classes of chirped pulses of controllable amplitude and/or detuning, families of models with double or multiple (periodic) crossings, periodic amplitude modulation field configurations, etc. We present several families of constant-detuning field configurations the members of which are symmetric or asymmetric two-peak finite-area pulses with controllable distance between the peaks and controllable amplitude of each of the peaks. We show that the edge shapes, the distance between the peaks as well as the amplitude of the peaks are controlled almost independently, by different parameters. We identify the parameters controlling each of the mentioned features and discuss other basic properties of pulse shapes. We show that the pulse edges may become step-wise functions and determine the positions of the limiting vertical-wall edges. We show that the pulse width is controlled by only two of the involved parameters. For some values of these parameters the pulse width diverges and for some other values the pulses become infinitely narrow. We show that the effect of the two mentioned parameters is almost similar, that is, both parameters are able to independently produce pulses of almost the same shape and width.

Complete-return spectrum for a generalized Rosen-Zener two-state term-crossing model

The general semiclassical time-dependent two-state problem is considered for a specific field configuration referred to as the generalized Rosen-Zener model. This is a rich family of pulse amplitude- and phase-modulation functions describing both non-crossing and term-crossing models with one or two crossing points. The model includes the original constant-detuning non-crossing Rosen-Zener model as a particular case. We show that the governing system of equations is reduced to a confluent Heun equation. When inspecting the conditions for returning the system to the initial state at the end of the interaction with the field, we reformulate the problem as an eigenvalue problem for the peak Rabi frequency and apply the Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory. Further, we develop a generalized approach for finding the higher-order approximations, which is applicable for the whole variation region of the involved input parameters of the system. We examine the general surface in the 3D space of input parameters, which defines the position of the n-th order return-resonance, and show that the section of the general surface is accurately approximated by an ellipse. We find a highly accurate analytic description through the zeros of a Kummer confluent hypergeometric function. From the point of view of the generality, the analytical description of mentioned curve for the whole variation range of all involved parameters is the main result of the present paper.

Dirac-Kähler particle in Riemann spherical space: boson interpretation

In the context of the composite boson interpretation, we construct the exact general solution of the Dirac--Kähler equation for the case of the spherical Riemann space of constant positive curvature, for which due to the geometry itself one may expect to have a discrete energy spectrum. In the case of the minimal value of the total angular momentum, $j=0$, the radial equations are reduced to second-order ordinary differential equations, which are straightforwardly solved in terms of the hypergeometric functions. For non-zero values of the total angular momentum, however, the radial equations are reduced to a pair of complicated fourth-order differential equations. Employing the factorization approach, we derive the general solution of these equations involving four independent fundamental solutions written in terms of combinations of the hypergeometric functions. The corresponding discrete energy spectrum is then determined via termination of the involved hypergeometric series, resulting in quasi-polynomial wave-functions. The constructed solutions lead to notable observations when compared with those for the ordinary Dirac particle. The energy spectrum for the Dirac-Kähler particle in spherical space is much more complicated. Its structure substantially differs from that for the Dirac particle since it consists of two paralleled energy level series each of which is twofold degenerate. Besides, none of the two separate series coincides with the series for the Dirac particle. Thus, the Dirac--Kähler field cannot be interpreted as a system of four Dirac fermions. Additional arguments supporting this conclusion are discussed.

Fifteen classes of solutions of the quantum two-state problem in terms of the confluent Heun function

We derive 15 classes of time-dependent two-state models solvable in terms of the confluent Heun functions. These classes extend over all the known families of three- and two-parametric models solvable in terms of the hypergeometric and the confluent hypergeometric functions to more general four-parametric classes involving three-parametric detuning modulation functions. In the case of constant detuning the field configurations describe excitations of two-state quantum systems by symmetric or asymmetric pulses of controllable width and edge-steepness. The classes that provide constant detuning pulses of finite area are identified and the factors controlling the corresponding pulse shapes are discussed. The positions and the heights of the peaks are mostly defined by two of the three parameters of the detuning modulation function, while the pulse width is mainly controlled by the third one, the constant term. The classes suggest numerous symmetric and asymmetric chirped pulses and a variety of models with two crossings of the frequency resonance. We discuss the excitation of a two-level atom by a pulse of Lorentzian shape with a detuning providing one or two crossings of the resonance. We derive closed form solutions for particular curves in the 3D space of the involved parameters which compose the complete return spectrum of the considered two-state quantum system.

General conditions for vanishing the current J^{z} for Dirac field on boundaries of the domain between two planes

In connection with the Casimir effect for a spinor field in presence of external magnetic field, of special interest are solutions of the Dirac equation in the domains restricted by two planes, which have vanishing the third projection of the conserved current J^{z} on two boundaries. General conditions for vanishing the current are formulated, they reduce to linear homogeneous algebraic system, for which solutions exist only when vanishing the determinant of the linear system, that is for the roots of a 4-th order algebraic equation with respect to the variable e^{2ik a}, where a is a half-distance between the planes, and k stands for the third projection of the Dirac particle momentum. All solutions of the equation have been found explicitly, each of them provides us in principle with a special possibility to get the quantization rules for parameter k; the most of produced expression for the roots can be solved with respect to parameter k only numerically. Generally, solutions e^{2ik a} depend on 4 arbitrary phase parameters which influence the appropriate wave functions with vanishing current: J^{z}(z=-z,+a)=0.

Higher order transmission resonances in above-barrier reflection of ultra-cold atoms

The reflectionless transmission resonances in above-barrier reflection of Bose-Einstein condensates by the Rosen-Morse potential are considered using the mean field Gross-Pitaevskii approach. Applying an exact third order nonlinear differential equation obeyed by the condensate's density, the exact solution of the problem for the first resonance is derived. It is shown that in the nonlinear case the total transmission is possible for positive potential heights, i.e., for potential barriers. Further, it is shown that an appropriate approximation for higher-order resonances can be constructed using a limit solution of the equation for the density written as a root of a polynomial equation of the third degree. Using this limit function and the solution for the first resonance, a simple approximation for the shift of the nonlinear resonance potential's depth from the corresponding linear resonance's position is constructed for higher order resonances. The result is written as a linear function of the resonance order. This behavior notably differs from the case of the rectangular barrier for which the nonlinear shift is approximately constant for all the resonance orders.

Hydrogen atom in de Sitter spaces

The hydrogen atom theory is developed for the de Sitter and anti de Sitter spaces on the basis of the Klein-Gordon-Fock wave equation in static coordinates. In both models, after separation of the variables, the problem is reduced to the general Heun equation, a second order linear differential equation having four regular singular points. A qualitative examination shows that the energy spectrum for the hydrogen atom in the de Sitter space should be quasi-stationary, and the atom should be unstable. We derive an approximate expression for energy levels within the quasi-classical approach and estimate the probability of decay of the atom. A similar analysis shows that in the anti de Sitter model the hydrogen atom should be stable in the quantum-mechanical sense. Using the quasi-classical approach, we derive approximate formulas for energy levels for this case as well. Finally, we present the extension to the case of a spin 1/2 particle for both de Sitter models. This extension leads to complicated differential equations with 8 singular points.

Matter wave propagation above a step potential within the cubic-nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We analyze the matter wave transmission above a step potential within the framework of the cubic-nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We present a comprehensive analysis of the corresponding stationary problem based on an exact second-order nonlinear differential equation for the probability density. The exact solution of the problem in terms of the Jacobi elliptic sn-function is presented and analyzed. Qualitatively distinct types of wave propagation picture are classified depending on the input parameters of the system. Analyzing the 2D space of involved dimensionless parameters, the nonlinearity and the reflecting potential's height/depth given in the units of the chemical potential, we show that the region of the parameters that does not sustain restricted solutions is given by a closed curve consisting of a segment of an elliptic curve and two line intervals. We show that there exists a specific singular point, belonging to the elliptic curve, which causes a jump from one evolution scenario to another one. The position of this point is determined and the peculiarities of the evolution scenarios (oscillatory, non-oscillatory and diverging) for all the allowed regions of involved parameters are described and analyzed in detail.

New relations for the derivative of the confluent Heun function

The cases when the equation for the derivative of the confluent Heun function has only three singularities (in general, the equation has four such points) are examined. It is shown that this occurs only in three specific cases. Further, it is shown that in all these three cases this equation is reduced to some confluent Heun equation with changed parameters. This means that in these cases the derivative of the confluent Heun function is expressed via some other confluent Heun function. The analysis of the obtained relations shows that they can be useful for the construction of some exact solutions of the confluent Heun equation for specific values of involved parameters. Several examples of such cases are presented; and for all the cases the final solutions in terms of simpler special functions are explicitly presented. In addition, it is shown that in the mentioned three cases, the solution can be expanded as a series in terms of generalized hypergeometric functions of Goursat or Clausen.

The Appell hypergeometric expansions of the solutions of the general Heun equation

Starting from the equation obeyed by the derivative, we construct several expansions of the solutions of the general Heun equation in terms of the Appell generalized hypergeometric functions of two variables of the fist kind. Several cases when the expansions reduce to ones written in terms of simpler mathematical functions such as the incomplete Beta function or the Gauss hypergeometric function are identified. The conditions for deriving finite-sum solutions via termination of the series are discussed. In general, the coefficients of the expansions obey four-term recurrence relations; however, there exist certain sets of the parameters for which the recurrence relations involve only two terms, though not successive. The coefficients of the expansions are then explicitly calculated and the general solution of the Heun equation is constructed in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric functions.

Time-dependent level crossing models solvable in terms of the confluent Heun functions

We discuss the level-crossing field configurations for which the quantum time-dependent two-state problem is solvable in terms of the confluent Heun functions. We show that these configurations belong to fifteen four-parametric families of models that generalize all the known 3- and 2-parametric families for which the problem is solvable in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric and the Kummer confluent hypergeometric functions. Analyzing the general case of variable Rabi frequency and frequency detuning we mention that the most notable features of the models provided by the derived classes are due to the extra constant term in the detuning modulation function. Due to this term the classes suggest numerous symmetric or asymmetric chirped pulses and a variety of models with two crossings of the frequency resonance. The latter models are generated by both real and complex transformations of the independent variable. In general, the resulting detuning functions are asymmetric, the asymmetry being controlled by the parameters of the detuning modulation function. In some cases, however, the asymmetry may be additionally caused by the amplitude modulation function. We present an example of the latter possibility and additionally mention a constant amplitude model with periodically repeated resonance-crossings. Finally, we discuss the excitation of a two-level atom by a pulse of Lorentzian shape with a detuning providing one or two crossings of the resonance. Using a series expansion of the solution of the confluent Heun equation in terms of the Kummer hypergeometric functions we derive particular closed form solutions of the two-state problem for this field configuration. The particular sets of the involved parameters for which these solutions are obtained define curves in the 3D space of the involved parameters belonging to the complete return spectrum of the considered two-state quantum system.

Transmission resonances in above-barrier reflection of ultra-cold atoms by the Rosen-Morse potential

Quantum above-barrier reflection of ultra-cold atoms by the Rosen-Morse potential is analytically considered within the mean field Gross-Pitaevskii approximation. Reformulating the problem of reflectionless transmission as a quasi-linear eigenvalue problem for the potential depth, an approximation for the specific height of the potential that supports reflectionless transmission of the incoming matter wave is derived via modification of the Rayleigh-Schroedinger time-independent perturbation theory. The approximation provides highly accurate description of the resonance position for all the resonance orders if the nonlinearity parameter is small compared with the incoming particles chemical potential. Notably, the result for the first transmission resonance turns out to be exact, i.e., the derived formula for the resonant potential height gives the exact value of the first nonlinear resonances position for all the allowed variation range of the involved parameters, the nonlinearity parameter and chemical potential. This has been shown by constructing the exact solution of the problem for the first resonance. Furthermore, the presented approximation reveals that, in contrast to the linear case, in the nonlinear case reflectionless transmission may occur not only for potential wells but also for potential barriers with positive potential height. It also shows that the nonlinear shift of the resonance position from the position of the corresponding linear resonance is approximately described as a linear function of the resonance order. Finally, a compact (yet, highly accurate) analytic formula for the n-th order resonance position is constructed via combination of analytical and numerical methods.

Two strong nonlinearity regimes in cold molecule formation

Two distinct strongly non-linear scenarios of molecule formation in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (either by photoassociation or Feshbach resonance) corresponding to large and small field detuning are revealed. By examining arbitrary external field configurations, we show that the association process in the first case is almost non-oscillatory in time while in the second case the evolution of the system displays strongly pronounced Rabi-type oscillations. We construct highly accurate approximate solutions for both limit cases. We show that at strong coupling limit the non-crossing models are able to provide conversion of no more than one third of the initial atomic population. Finally, we show that for constant-amplitude models involving a finite final detuning the strong interaction limit is not optimal for molecule formation.
