Finite-size effects on the minimal conductivity in graphene with Rashba spin-orbit coupling

We study theoretically the minimal conductivity of monolayer graphene in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The Rashba spin-orbit interaction causes the low-energy bands to undergo trigonal-warping deformation and for energies smaller than the Lifshitz energy, the Fermi circle breaks up into parts, forming four separate Dirac cones. We calculate the minimal conductivity for an ideal strip of length $L$ and width $W$ within the Landauer--Büttiker formalism in a continuum and in a tight binding model. We show that the minimal conductivity depends on the relative orientation of the sample and the probing electrodes due to the interference of states related to different Dirac cones. We also explore the effects of finite system size and find that the minimal conductivity can be lowered compared to that of an infinitely wide sample.

Ballistic transport and boundary scattering in InSb/InxAl1-xSb mesoscopic devices

We describe the influence of hard wall confinement and lateral dimension on the low temperature transport properties of long diffusive channels and ballistic crosses fabricated in an InSb/InxAl1-xSb heterostructure. Partially diffuse boundary scattering is found to play a crucial role in the electron dynamics of ballistic crosses and substantially enhance the negative bend resistance. Experimental observations are supported by simulations using a classical billiard ball model for which good agreement is found when diffuse boundary scattering is included.

Critical Josephson current in ballistic superconductor-graphene systems

We calculate the phase, the temperature and the junction length dependence of the supercurrent for ballistic graphene Josephson-junctions. For low temperatures we find non-sinusoidal dependence of the supercurrent on the superconductor phase difference for both short and long junctions. The skewness, which characterizes the deviation of the current-phase relation from a simple sinusoidal one, shows a linear dependence on the critical current for small currents. We discuss the similarities and differences with respect to the classical theory of Josephson junctions, where the weak link is formed by a diffusive or ballistic metal. The relation to other recent theoretical results on graphene Josephson junctions is pointed out and the possible experimental relevance of our work is considered as well.

Proximity-induced sub-gaps in Andreev billiards

We examine the density of states of an Andreev billiard and show that any billiard with a finite upper cut-off in the path length distribution $P(s)$ will possess an energy gap on the scale of the Thouless energy. An exact quantum mechanical calculation for different Andreev billiards gives good agreement with the semi-classical predictions when the energy dependent phase shift for Andreev reflections is properly taken into account. Based on this new semi-classical Bohr-Sommerfeld approximation of the density of states, we derive a simple formula for the energy gap. We show that the energy gap, in units of Thouless energy, may exceed the value predicted earlier from random matrix theory for chaotic billiards.
