Nonperturbative structure of the quark-gluon vertex

The complete tensor structure of the quark--gluon vertex in Landau gauge is determined at two kinematical points (`asymmetric' and `symmetric') from lattice QCD in the quenched approximation. The simulations are carried out at beta=6.0, using a mean-field improved Sheikholeslami-Wohlert fermion action, with two quark masses ~ 60 and 115 MeV. We find substantial deviations from the abelian form at the asymmetric point. The mass dependence is found to be negligible. At the symmetric point, the form factor related to the chromomagnetic moment is determined and found to contribute significantly to the infrared interaction strength.

Quark-gluon vertex in a momentum subtraction scheme

We compute the quark-gluon vertex in quenched QCD, in the Landau gauge using an off-shell mean-field O(a)-improved fermion action. The running coupling is calculated in an `asymmetric' momentum subtraction scheme (MOM~). We obtain a crude estimate for Lambda_MSbar=170+/-65 MeV, which is considerably lower than other determinations of this quantity. However, substantial systematic errors remain.

Regularization-independent study of renormalized non-perturbative quenched QED

A recently proposed regularization-independent method is used for the first time to solve the renormalized fermion Schwinger-Dyson equation numerically in quenched QED$_4$. The Curtis-Pennington vertex is used to illustrate the technique and to facilitate comparison with previous calculations which used the alternative regularization schemes of modified ultraviolet cut-off and dimensional regularization. Our new results are in excellent numerical agreement with these, and so we can now conclude with confidence that there is no residual regularization dependence in these results. Moreover, from a computational point of view the regularization independent method has enormous advantages, since all integrals are absolutely convergent by construction, and so do not mix small and arbitrarily large momentum scales. We analytically predict power law behaviour in the asymptotic region, which is confirmed numerically with high precision. The successful demonstration of this efficient new technique opens the way for studies of unquenched QED to be undertaken in the near future.

Regularization-independent studies of nonperturbative field theory

We propose a regularization-independent method for studying a renormalizable field theory nonperturbatively through its Dyson-Schwinger equations. Using QED_4 as an example, we show how the coupled equations determining the nonperturbative fermion and photon propagators can be written entirely in terms of renormalized quantities, which renders the equations manifestly finite in a regularization-independent manner. As an illustration of the technique, we apply it to a study of the fermion propagator in quenched QED_4 with the Curtis-Pennington electron-photon vertex. At large momenta the mass function, and hence the anomalous mass dimension gamma_m(alpha), is calculated analytically and we find excellent agreement with previous work. Finally, we show that for the CP vertex the perturbation expansion of gamma_m(alpha) has a finite radius of convergence.

ONE LOOP QED VERTEX IN ANY COVARIANT GAUGE: ITS COMPLETE ANALYTIC FORM

The one loop vertex in QED is calculated in arbitrary covariant gauges as an analytic function of its momenta. The vertex is decomposed into a longitudinal part, that is fully responsible for ensuring the Ward and Ward-Takahashi identities are satisfied, and a transverse part. The transverse part is decomposed into 8 independent components each being separately free of kinematic singularities in $\bf any$ covariant gauge in a basis that modifies that proposed by Ball and Chiu. Analytic expressions for all 11 components of the ${O(α)}$ vertex are given explicitly in terms of elementary functions and one Spence function. These results greatly simplify in particular kinematic regimes.
