Standard Model Higgs Peaks: a Note on the Vacuum Instability during Inflation

In the Standard Model, the Higgs potential develops an instability at high field values when the quartic self-coupling runs negative. Large quantum fluctuations during cosmic inflation could drive the Higgs field beyond the potential barrier, creating regions that would be catastrophic for our observable universe. We point out that the extreme-value statistics describing the peaks (maxima) of the Higgs values is the correct statistics to infer the condition to avoid vacuum instability. Even if this statistics delivers a bound on the Hubble rate during inflation which is only a factor $\sqrt{2}$ stronger than the one commonly adopted in the literature, it is qualitatively distinct and we believe worthwhile communicating it.

Primordial Black Holes in Matter-Dominated Eras: the Role of Accretion

We consider the role of secondary infall and accretion onto an initially overdense perturbation in matter-dominated eras, like the one which is likely to follow the end of inflation. We show that primordial black holes may form through post-collapse accretion, namely the accretion onto an initial overdensity whose collapse has not given rise to a primordial black hole. Accretion may be also responsible for the growth of the primordial black hole masses by orders of magnitude till the end of the matter-dominated era.

Gauge Field Localization in the Linear Dilaton Background

We study dynamical self-localization of gauge theories in higher dimensions. Specifically, we consider a 5D $U(1)$ gauge theory in the linear dilaton (clockwork) background, with anisotropic gauge couplings along the transverse (fifth) direction and the longitudinal (four-dimensional) directions. By using lattice techniques, we calculate the space plaquettes and the helicity moduli and we determine the phase diagram of the model. We find strong evidence that the model exhibits a new phase, a layer phase, where the four-dimensional physics decouples from the five-dimensional dynamics. The layer phase corresponds to a strong force along the fifth direction and a Coulomb phase along the four-dimensional longitudinal directions. This is in accordance with the clockwork mechanism where light particles with exponentially suppressed interactions are generated in theories with no fundamental small parameters.

A Note on the Swampland Distance Conjecture

We discuss the Swampland Distance Conjecture in the framework of black hole thermodynamics. In particular, we consider black holes in de Sitter space and we show that the Swampland Distance Conjecture is a consequence of the fact that apparent horizons are always inside cosmic event horizons whenever they exist in the case of fast-roll inflation. In addition, we show that the Bekenstein and the Hubble entropy bounds for the entropy in a region of spacetime lead similarly to the same conjecture.

Cosmology and Supergravity

Abdus Salam was a true master of 20th Century Theoretical Physics. Not only was he a pioneer of the Standard Model (for which he shared the Nobel Prize with S. Glashow and S.Weinberg), but he also (co)authored many other outstanding contributions to the field of Fundamental Interactions and their unification. In particular, he was a major contributor to the development of supersymmetric theories, where he also coined the word "Supersymmetry" (replacing the earlier "Supergauges" drawn from String Theory). He also introduced the basic concept of "Superspace" and the notion of "Goldstone Fermion"(Goldstino). These concepts proved instrumental for the exploration of the ultraviolet properties and for the study of spontaneously broken phases of super Yang-Mills theories and Supergravity. They continue to play a key role in current developments in Early-Universe Cosmology. In this contribution we review models of inflation based on Supergravity with spontaneously broken local supersymmetry, with emphasis on the role of nilpotent superfields to describe a de Sitter phase of our Universe.

Towards a Gravity Dual for the Large Scale Structure of the Universe

The dynamics of the large-scale structure of the universe enjoys at all scales, even in the highly non-linear regime, a Lifshitz symmetry during the matter-dominated period. In this paper we propose a general class of six-dimensional spacetimes which could be a gravity dual to the four-dimensional large-scale structure of the universe. In this set-up, the Lifshitz symmetry manifests itself as an isometry in the bulk and our universe is a four-dimensional brane moving in such six-dimensional bulk. After finding the correspondence between the bulk and the brane dynamical Lifshitz exponents, we find the intriguing result that the preferred value of the dynamical Lifshitz exponent of our observed universe, at both linear and non-linear scales, corresponds to a fixed point of the RGE flow of the dynamical Lifshitz exponent in the dual system where the symmetry is enhanced to the Schrodinger group containing a non-relativistic conformal symmetry. We also investigate the RGE flow between fixed points of the Lifshitz dynamical exponent in the bulk and observe that this flow is reflected in a growth rate of the large-scale structure, which seems to be in qualitative agreement with what is observed in current data. Our set-up might provide an interesting new arena for testing the ideas of holography and gravitational duals.

A Consistency Relation for the Observed Galaxy Bispectrum and the Local non-Gaussianity from Relativistic Corrections

We obtain a consistency relation for the observed three-point correlator of galaxies. It includes relativistic effects and it is valid in the squeezed limit. Furthermore, the consistency relation is non-perturbative and can be used at arbitrarily small scales for the short modes. Our results are also useful to compute the non-linear relativistic corrections which induce a signal in the observations that might be misinterpreted as primordial non-Gaussianity with a local shape. We estimate the effective local non-Gaussianity parameter from the relativistic corrections. The exact value depends on the redshift and the magnification bias. At redshift of $ z = 1$, in the absence of magnification bias, we get $\,\, f^{\rm GR}_{\rm NL} \simeq - 3.7 $.

Properties of Nilpotent Supergravity

We construct Supergravity models where the goldstino multiplet has a gravitational origin, being dual to the chiral curvature superfield. Supersymmetry is nonlinearly realized due to a nilpotent constraint, while the goldstino arises from $γ$-traces of the gauge-invariant gravitino field strength. After duality transformations one recovers, as expected, the standard Volkov-Akulov Lagrangian coupled to Supergravity, but the gravitational origin of the goldstino multiplet restricts the available types of matter couplings. We also construct explicitly some inflationary models of this type, which contain both the inflaton and the nilpotent superfield.

Supersymmetry Breaking and Inflation from Higher Curvature Supergravity

The generic embedding of the $R+R^2$ higher curvature theory into old-minimal supergravity leads to models with rich vacuum structure in addition to its well-known inflationary properties. When the model enjoys an exact R-symmetry, there is an inflationary phase with a single supersymmetric Minkowski vacuum. This appears to be a special case of a more generic set-up, which in principle may include R-symmetry violating terms which are still of pure supergravity origin. By including the latter terms, we find new supersymmetry breaking vacua compatible with single-field inflationary trajectories. We discuss explicitly two such models and we illustrate how the inflaton is driven towards the supersymmetry breaking vacuum after the inflationary phase. In these models the gravitino mass is of the same order as the inflaton mass. Therefore, pure higher curvature supergravity may not only accommodate the proper inflaton field, but it may also provide the appropriate hidden sector for supersymmetry breaking after inflation has ended.

A Consistency Relation for the CMB B-mode Polarization in the Squeezed Limit

A large-scale temperature perturbation has a non-zero correlation with the power spectrum of B-modes of cosmological origin on short scales while the corresponding correlation is expected to be zero for B-modes sourced by galactic foregrounds. We thus compute the squeezed limit of a three-point function in which one correlates the temperature fluctuations at large scales with two polarization modes at small scales. In the particular case of the B-mode polarization we obtain a relation that connects the squeezed limit of the $TBB$ three-point function with the cosmological B-mode power spectrum, which can be used as a consistency relation. This could in principle help to distinguish a primordial signal from that induced by inter-stellar dust.

Testing the Origin of Cosmological Magnetic Fields through the Large-Scale Structure Consistency Relations

We study the symmetries of the post-recombination cosmological magnetohydrodynamical equations which describe the evolution of dark matter, baryons and magnetic fields in a self-consistent way. This is done both at the level of fluid equations and of Vlasov-Poisson-Maxwell equations in phase space. We discuss some consistency relations for the soft limit of the (n + 1)-correlator functions involving magnetic fields and matter overdensities. In particular, we stress that any violation of such consistency relations at equal-time would point towards an inflationary origin of the magnetic field.

Conformal Symmetries of FRW Accelerating Cosmologies

We show that any accelerating Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmology with equation of state w < -1/3 (and therefore not only a de Sitter stage with w =-1) exhibits three-dimensional conformal symmetry on future constant-time hypersurfaces. We also offer an alternative derivation of this result in terms of conformal Killing vectors and show that long wavelength comoving curvature perturbations of the perturbed FRW metric are just conformal Killing motions of the FRW background. We then extend theb boundary conformal symmetry to the bulk for accelerating cosmologies. Our findings indicate that one can easily generate perturbations of scalar fields which are not only scale invariant, but also fully conformally invariant on super-Hubble scales. Measuring a scale-invariant power spectrum for the cosmological perturbation does not automatically imply that the universe went through a de Sitter stage.

Global Supersymmetry on Curved Spaces in Various Dimensions

We propose methods towards a systematic determination of d dimensional curved spaces where Euclidean field theories with rigid supersymmetry can be defined. The analysis is carried out from a group theory as well as from a supergravity point of view. In particular, by using appropriate gauged supergravities in various dimensions we show that supersymmetry can be defined in conformally flat spaces, such as non-compact hyperboloids $H^{n+1}$ and compact spheres $S^n$ or --by turning on appropriate Wilson lines corresponding to R-symmetry vector fields-- on $S^1 x S^n$, with n<6. By group theory arguments we show that Euclidean field theories with rigid supersymmetry cannot be consistently defined on round spheres $S^d$ if d>5 (despite the existence of Killing spinors). We also show that distorted spheres and certain orbifolds are also allowed by the group theory classification.

On the Starobinsky Model of Inflation from Supergravity

We discuss how the higher-derivative Starobinsky model of inflation originates from N=1 supergravity. It is known that, in the old-minimal supergravity description written by employing a chiral compensator in the superconformal framework, the Starobinsky model is equivalent to a no-scale model with F-term potential. We show that the Starobinsky model can also be originated within the so-called new-minimal supergravity, where a linear compensator superfield is employed. In this formulation, the Starobinsky model is equivalent to standard supergravity coupled to a massive vector multiplet whose lowest scalar component plays the role of the inflaton and the vacuum energy is provided by a D-term potential. We also point out that higher-order corrections to the supergravity Lagrangian represent a threat to the Starobinsky model as they can destroy the flatness of the inflaton potential in its scalar field equivalent description.

Operator Product Expansion of Inflationary Correlators and Conformal Symmetry of de Sitter

We study the multifield inflationary models where the cosmological perturbation is sourced by light scalar fields other than the inflaton. The corresponding perturbations are both scale invariant and special conformally invariant. We exploit the operator product expansion technique of conformal field theories to study the inflationary correlators enjoying the symmetries present during the de Sitter epoch. The operator product expansion is particularly powerful in characterizing inflationary correlation functions in two observationally interesting limits, the squeezed limit of the three-point correlator and the collapsed limit of the four-point correlator. Despite the fact that the shape of the four-point correlators is not fixed by the symmetries of de Sitter, its exact shape can be found in the collapsed limit making use of the operator product expansion. By employing the fact that conformal invariance imposes the two-point cross-correlations of the light fields to vanish unless the fields have the same conformal weights, we are able to show that the Suyama-Yamaguchi inequality relating the coefficients $f_{\rm NL}$ of the bispectrum in the squeezed limit and $τ_{\rm NL}$ of the trispectrum in the collapsed limit also holds when the light fields are intrinsically non-Gaussian. In fact, we show that the inequality is valid irrespectively of the conformal symmetry, being just a consequence of fundamental physical principles, such as the short-distance expansion of operator products. The observation of a strong violation of the inequality will then have profound implications for inflationary models as it will imply either that multifield inflation cannot be responsible for generating the observed fluctuations independently of the details of the model or that some new non-trivial degrees of freedom play a role during inflation.

The Four-point Correlator in Multifield Inflation, the Operator Product Expansion and the Symmetries of de Sitter

We study the multifield inflationary models where the cosmological perturbation is sourced by light scalar fields other than the inflaton. We exploit the operator product expansion and partly the symmetries present during the de Sitter epoch to characterize the non-Gaussian four-point correlator in the squeezed limit. We point out that the contribution to it from the intrinsic non-Gaussianity of the light fields at horizon crossing can be larger than the usually studied contribution arising on superhorizon scales and it comes with a different shape. Our findings indicate that particular attention needs to be taken when studying the effects of the primordial NG on real observables, such as the clustering of dark matter halos.

Geometric Transitions, Brane Dynamics and Gauge Theories

We consider the interplay between brane constructions and type IIA, IIB or M-theory geometries on Calabi-Yau (CY) and G_2 holonomy manifolds. This is related to N=1 (and N=2) gauge theories in four dimensions. We first discuss simple geometric transitions corresponding to brane set ups involving orthogonal (or parallel) Neveu-Schwarz branes that approach each other. This is related to confinement and Seiberg duality in SQCD. In particular, we argue that in type IIA, a CP^1 of singularities and one unit of Ramond-Ramond (RR) flux is dual to a D6 brane wrapped on a Lens space, describing the UV and IR of N=1 Super-Yang-Mills (SYM), respectively. Also, in the large N_c duality that relates D6 branes on S^3 to an S^2 with RR flux, we implement the presence of $N_f$ flavors of quarks. We then compactify M-theory on T^*(S^3) X S^1)/Z_2 and observe that one phase describes SO(4) SYM in the UV and two others describe confinement. Moreover, we consider compact 7-spaces (CY X S^1)/Z_2. We describe transitions where disconnected S^3's approach and connect each other before they vanish. These effects correspond to non-Abelian Higgs mechanism and confinement. The similar transitions involving S^2 X S^1's are also considered. Finally, we present transitions at finite distance in moduli space, where the first Betti number b_1 of 3-cycles of singularities changes.

Localized Gravitons, Gauge Bosons and Chiral Fermions in Smooth Spaces Generated by a Bounce

We study five-dimensional solutions to Einstein equations coupled to a scalar field. Bounce-type solutions for the scalar field are associated with AdS_5 spaces with smooth warp functions. Gravitons are dynamically localized in this framework in analogy to the Randall-Sundrum solution whereas, a bulk fermion gives rise to a single chiral zero mode localized at the bounce. Additional bulk scalar fields are incorporated in this picture. The dilaton, as a bulk scalar leads, through its coupling, to localized gauge boson fields, something that holds also in the case that the bounce system is replaced by a brane.

New Type IIB Vacua and their F-Theory Interpretation

We discuss a D3-D7 system in type IIB string theory. The near-horizon geometry is described by AdS^5 x X^5 where X^5 is a U(1) bundle over a Kahler-Einstein complex surface S with positive first Chern class c_1>0. The surface S can either be P^1 x P^1, P^2 or P_{n_1,...,n_k}, a blow up of P^2 at k points with 3\leq k\leq 8. The P^2 corresponds to the maximally supersymmetric AdS^5 x S^5 vacuum while the other cases lead to vacua with less supersymmetries. In the F-theory context they can be viewed as compactifications on elliptically fibered almost Fano 3-folds.

Non-Abelian Duality for Open Strings

We examine non-abelian duality transformations in the open string case. After gauging the isometries of the target space and developing the general formalism, we study in details the duals oftarget spaces with SO(N) isometries which, for the SO(2) case, reduces to the known abelian T-duals. We apply the formalism to electrically and magnetically charged 4D black hole solutions and, as in the abelian case, dual coordinates satisfy Dirichlet conditions.
