Design and Characteristics of a Population Inversion X-ray Laser Oscillator

Oscillators are at the heart of optical lasers, providing stable transform limited pulses. In contrast, X-ray free electron lasers use self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE), resulting in large stochastic intensity and spectral fluctuations. Amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) of the $Kα_1$ line has been recently observed for Ne gas, Cu compounds and Mn solutions at the LCLS and SACLA X-ray free electron lasers (XFELs), using an X-ray SASE pulse as a pump to create population inversion. Here we describe the physics and realization of an X-ray laser oscillator (XLO) based on periodically pumping a Cu compound gain medium in a tunable Bragg cavity with a SASE pulse train, generating intense ($\sim$ 5 x 10$^{10}$ ph/pulse), fully coherent, transform limited 8 keV pulses with 48 meV spectral resolution. We also discuss extending these results to other elements to operate XLO from about 5 to 12 keV, improving X-ray-based research beyond current capabilities.

Commissioning and First Results From Channeling Radiation At FAST

X-rays have widespread applications in science and industry, but developing a simple, compact, and high-quality X-ray source remains a challenge. Our collaboration has explored the possible use of channeling radiation driven by a 50 MeV low-emittance electron beam to produce narrowband hard X-rays with photon energy of 40 to 140 keV. Here we present the simulated X-ray spectra including the background bremsstrahlung contribution, and a description of the required optimization of the relevant electron-beam parameters necessary to maximize brilliance of the resulting X-ray beam. Results are presented from our test of this, carried out at the Fermilab Accelerator Science & Technology (FAST) facility's 50-MeV low-energy electron injector. As a result of the beam parameters, made possible by the photo-injector based SRF linac, the average brilliance at FAST was expected to be about one order of magnitude higher than that in previous experiments.

Microlens Array Laser Transverse Shaping Technique for Photoemission Electron Source

A common issue encountered in photoemission electron sources used in electron accelerators is distortion of the laser spot due to non ideal conditions at all stages of the amplification. Such a laser spot at the cathode may produce asymmetric charged beams that will result in degradation of the beam quality due to space charge at early stages of acceleration and fail to optimally utilize the cathode surface. In this note we study the possibility of using microlens arrays to dramatically improve the transverse uniformity of the drive laser pulse on UV photocathodes at both Fermilab Accelerator Science \& Technology (FAST) facility and Argonne Wakefield Accelerator (AWA). In particular, we discuss the experimental characterization of the homogeneity and periodic patterned formation at the photocathode. Finally, we compare the experimental results with the paraxial analysis, ray tracing and wavefront propagation software.

Simulation of a cascaded longitudinal space charge amplifier for broadband radiation production using a superconducting linac

Longitudinal space charge (LSC) effects are generally considered harmful in free-electron lasers as they can seed unfavorable energy modulations that can result in density modulations with associated emittance dilution. It was pointed out, however, that such "micro-bunching instabilities" could be potentially useful to support the generation of broadband coherent radiation. Therefore there has been an increasing interest in devising accelerator beam lines capable of controlling LSC induced density modulations. In the present paper we augment these previous investigations by combining a grid-less space charge algorithm with the popular particle-tracking program Elegant. This high-fidelity model of the space charge is used to benchmark conventional LSC models. We finally employ the developed model to optimize the performance of a cascaded longitudinal space charge amplifier using beam parameters comparable to the ones achievable at Fermilab Accelerator Science & Technology (FAST) facility currently under commissioning at Fermilab.

Isorotating Baby Skyrmions

We discuss how internal rotation with fixed angular frequency can affect the solitons in the baby Skyrme model in which the global O(3) symmetry is broken to the SO(2). Two particular choices of the potential term are considered, the "old" potential and the "new" double vacuum potential, We do not impose any assumptions about the symmetry on the fields. Our results confirm existence of two types of instabilities determined by the relation between the mass parameter of the potential and the angular frequency.

Resonance structures in coupled two-component $ϕ^4$ model

We present a numerical study of the process of the kink-antikink collisions in the coupled one-dimensional two-component $ϕ^4$ model. Our results reveal two different soliton solutions which represent double kink configuration and kink-non-topological soliton (lump) bound state. Collision of these solitons leads to very reach resonance structure which is related to reversible energy exchange between the kinks, non-topological solitons and the internal vibrational modes. Various channels of the collisions are discussed, it is shown there is a new type of self-similar fractal structure which appears in the collisions of the relativistic kinks, there the width of the resonance windows increases with the increase of the impact velocity. An analytical approximation scheme is discussed in the limit of the perturbative coupling between the sectors. Considering the spectrum of linear fluctuations around the solitons we found that the double kink configuration is unstable if the coupling constant between the sectors is negative.
