Quest for precision in hadronic cross sections at low energy: Monte Carlo tools vs. experimental data

We present the achievements of the last years of the experimental and theoretical groups working on hadronic cross section measurements at the low energy e+e- colliders in Beijing, Frascati, Ithaca, Novosibirsk, Stanford and Tsukuba and on tau decays. We sketch the prospects in these fields for the years to come. We emphasise the status and the precision of the Monte Carlo generators used to analyse the hadronic cross section measurements obtained as well with energy scans as with radiative return, to determine luminosities and tau decays. The radiative corrections fully or approximately implemented in the various codes and the contribution of the vacuum polarisation are discussed.

Radiative return method as a tool in hadronic physics

A short review of both theoretical and experimental aspects of the radiative return method is presented. It is emphasised that the method gives not only possibility of the independent from the scan method measurement of the hadronic cross section, but also can provide information concerning details of the hadronic interactions. New developments in the PHOKHARA event generator are also reviewed. The 3 pion and kaon pair production is implemented within the version 5.0 of the program, together with contributions of the radiative phi decays to the 2 pion final states. Missing NLO radiative corrections to the e+e- -> mu+ mu- gamma process will be implemented in the forthcoming version of the generator.

Charge asymmetry and radiative phi decays

The study of radiative phi decays into scalar mesons, with subsequent decay into pi pi gamma, constitutes an important topic at the electron-positron collider DAPHNE. The interference of the respective amplitude with the one for pi+ pi- gamma production, where the photon originates from initial state radiation, will allow for unambiguous tests of models for the phi -> gamma f0(-> pi pi) amplitude. The forward-backward asymmetry of charged pions, which is a clear signal of such an interference, amounts up to 30 % and is at the same time quite sensitive to the details of the various amplitudes. The results for several characteristic cases are presented and their implementation into the Monte Carlo generator PHOKHARA is described.

Numerical evaluation of the general massive 2-loop 4-denominator self-mass master integral from differential equations

The differential equation in the external invariant p^2 satisfied by the master integral of the general massive 2-loop 4-denominator self-mass diagram is exploited and the expansion of the master integral at p^2=0 is obtained analytically. The system composed by this differential equation with those of the master integrals related to the general massive 2-loop sunrise diagram is numerically solved by the Runge-Kutta method in the complex p^2 plane. A numerical method to obtain results for values of p^2 at and close to thresholds and pseudo-thresholds is discussed in details.

Perspectives for the radiative return at meson factories

The measurement of the pion form factor and, more generally, of the cross section for electron-positron annihilation into hadrons through the radiative return has become an important task for high luminosity colliders such as the Phi- or B-meson factories. This quantity is crucial for predictions of the hadronic contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, and to the running of the electromagnetic coupling. But the radiative return opens the possibility of many other physical applications. The physics potential of this method at high luminosity meson factories is discussed, the last upgraded version of the event generator PHOKHARA is presented, and future developments are highlighted.
