Vortex creation, annihilation and nonlinear dynamics in atomic vapors

We exploit new techniques for generating vortices and controlling their interactions in an optical beam in a nonlinear atomic vapor. A precise control of the vortex positions allows us to observe strong interactions leading to vortex dynamics involving annihilations. With this improved controlled nonlinear system, we get closer to the pure hydrodynamic regime than in previous experiments while a wavefront sensor offers us a direct access to the fluid's density and velocity. Finally, we developed a relative phase shift method which mimics a time evolution process without changing non-linear parameters. These observations are an important step toward the experimental implementation of 2D turbulent state

Second sound and the density response function in uniform superfluid atomic gases

Recently there has been renewed interest in second sound in superfluid Bose and Fermi gases. By using two-fluid hydrodynamic theory, we review the density response $χ_{nn}(\bq,ω)$ of these systems as a tool to identify second sound in experiments based on density probes. Our work generalizes the well-known studies of the dynamic structure factor $S(\bq,ω)$ in superfluid $^4$He in the critical region. We show that, in the unitary limit of uniform superfluid Fermi gases, the relative weight of second vs. first sound in the compressibility sum rule is given by the Landau--Placzek ratio $\lp\equiv (\bar{c}_p-\bar{c}_v)/\bar{c}_v$ for all temperatures below $T_c$. In contrast to superfluid $^4$He, $\lp$ is much larger in strongly interacting Fermi gases, being already of order unity for $T \sim 0.8 T_c$, thereby providing promising opportunities to excite second sound with density probes. The relative weights of first and second sound are quite different in $S(\bq,ω)$ (measured in pulse propagation studies) as compared to $\mathrm{Im}χ_{nn}(\bq,ω)$ (measured in two-photon Bragg scattering). We show that first and second sound in $S(\bq,ω)$ in a strongly interacting Bose-condensed gas are similar to those in a Fermi gas at unitarity. However, in a weakly interacting Bose gas, first and second sound are mainly uncoupled oscillations of the thermal cloud and condensate, respectively, and second sound has most of the spectral weight in $S(\bq,ω)$. We also discuss the behaviour of the superfluid and normal fluid velocity fields involved in first and second sound.

Superfluid density and condensate fraction in the BCS-BEC crossover regime at finite temperatures

The superfluid density is a fundamental quantity describing the response to a rotation as well as in two-fluid collisional hydrodynamics. We present extensive calculations of the superfluid density ρ_s in the BCS-BEC crossover regime of a uniform superfluid Fermi gas at finite temperatures. We include strong-coupling or fluctuation effects on these quantities within a Gaussian approximation. We also incorporate the same fluctuation effects into the BCS single-particle excitations described by the superfluid order parameter Δand Fermi chemical potential μ, using the Nozières and Schmitt-Rink (NSR) approximation. This treatment is shown to be necessary for consistent treatment of ρ_s over the entire BCS-BEC crossover. We also calculate the condensate fraction N_c as a function of the temperature, a quantity which is quite different from the superfluid density ρ_s. We show that the mean-field expression for the condensate fraction N_c is a good approximation even in the strong-coupling BEC regime. Our numerical results show how ρ_s and N_c depend on temperature, from the weak-coupling BCS region to the BEC region of tightly-bound Cooper pair molecules. In a companion paper by the authors (cond-mat/0609187), we derive an equivalent expression for ρ_s from the thermodynamic potential, which exhibits the role of the pairing fluctuations in a more explicit manner.

Single-particle excitations in the BCS-BEC crossover region II: Broad Feshbach resonance

We apply the formulation developed in a recent paper [Y. Ohashi and A. Griffin, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 72}, 013601, (2005)] for single-particle excitations in the BCS-BEC crossover to the case of a broad Feshbach resonance. At T=0, we solve the Bogoliubov-de Gennes coupled equations taking into account a Bose condensate of bound states (molecules). In the case of a broad resonance, the density profile $n(r)$, as well as the profile of the superfluid order parameter ${\tilde Δ}(r)$, are spatially spread out to the Thomas-Fermi radius, even in the crossover region. This order parameter ${\tilde Δ}(r)$ suppresses the effects of low-energy Andreev bound states on the rf-tunneling current. As a result, the peak energy in the rf-spectrum is found to occur at an energy equal to the superfluid order parameter ${\tilde Δ}(r=0)$ at the center of the trap, in contrast to the case of a narrow resonance, and in agreement with recent measurements. The LDA is found to give a good approximation for the rf-tunneling spectrum.

Fermi excitations in a trapped atomic Fermi gas with a molecular Bose condensate

We discuss the effect of a molecular Bose condensate on the energy of Fermi excitations in a trapped two-component atomic Fermi gas. The single-particle Green's functions can be approximated by the well-known BCS form, in both the BCS (Cooper pairs) and BEC (Feshbach resonance molecules) domains. The composite Bose order parameter ${\tilde Δ}$ describing bound states of two atoms and the Fermi chemical potential $μ$ are calculated self-consistently. In the BEC regime characterized by $μ<0$, the Fermi quasiparticle energy gap is given by $\sqrt{μ^2+{\tilde Δ}^2}$, instead of $|{\tilde Δ}|$ in the BCS region, where $μ>0$. This shows up in the characteristic energy of atoms from dissociated molecules.

Superfluid transition temperature in a trapped gas of Fermi atoms with a Feshbach resonance

We investigate strong coupling effects on the superfluid phase transition in a gas of Fermi atoms with a Feshbach resonance. The Feshbach resonance describes a composite quasi-Boson, which can give rise to an additional pairing interaction between the Fermi atoms. This attractive interaction becomes stronger as the threshold energy of the Feshbach resonance two-particle bound state is lowered. In a recent paper, we showed that in the uniform Fermi gas, this tunable pairing interaction naturally leads to a BCS-BEC crossover of the Nozi`eres and Schmitt-Rink kind, in which the BCS-type superfluid phase transition continuously changes into the BEC-type as the threshold energy is decreased. In this paper, we extend our previous work by including the effect of a harmonic trap potential, treated within the local density approximation (LDA). We also give results for both weak and strong coupling to the Feshbach resonance. We show that the BCS-BEC crossover phenomenon strongly modifies the shape of the atomic density profile at the superfluid phase transition temperature Tc, reflecting the change of the dominant particles going from Fermi atoms to composite Bosons. In the BEC regime, these composite Bosons are shown to first appear well above Tc. We also discuss the "phase diagram" above Tc as a function of the tunable threshold energy. We introduce a characteristic temperature T* describing the effective crossover in the normal phase from a Fermi gas of atoms to a gas of stable molecules.

The BCS-BEC Crossover in a Gas of Fermi Atoms with a Feshbach Resonance

We discuss the BCS-BEC crossover in a degenerate Fermi gas of two hyperfine states interacting close to a Feshbach resonance. This system has quasi-molecular Bosons associated with a Feshbach resonance, and this kinds of coupled Boson-Fermion model has been recently applied to Fermi atomic gases within a mean-field approximation. We show that by including fluctuation contribution to the free energy similar to that condiered by Nozi'eres and Schmitt-Rink, the character of the superfluid phase transition continuously changes from the BCS-type to the BEC-type, as the threshold of the quasi-molecular band is lowered. In the BEC regime, the quasi-molecules become stable long-lived composite Bosons, and an effective pairing interaction mediated by the molecules causes pre-formed Cooper-pairs to also be stable even above the transition temperature Tc. The superfluid phase transition is shown to be usefully interpreted as the Bose condensation of these two kinds of Bosons. The maximum Tc is given by (in terms of the Fermi temperature T_F) Tc=0.218T_F (uniform gas) and Tc=0.518T_F (trapped gas in a harmonic potential).

Quasiparticle kinetic equation in a trapped Bose gas at low temperatures

Recently the authors used the Kadanoff-Baym non-equilibrium Green's function formalism to derive kinetic equation for the non-condensate atoms, in conjunction with a consistent generalization of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the Bose condensate wavefunction. This work was limited to high temperatures, where the excited atoms could be described by a Hartree-Fock particle-like spectrum. We present the generalization of this recent work to low temperatures, where the single-particle spectrum is now described by the Bogoliubov-Popov approximation. We derive a kinetic equation for the quasiparticle distribution function with collision integrals describing scattering between quasiparticles and the condensate atoms. From the general expression for the collision integral for the scattering between quasiparticle excitations, we find the quasiparticle distribution function corresponding to local equilibrium. This expression includes a quasiparticle chemical potential that controls the non-diffusive equilibrium between condensate atoms and the quasiparticle excitations. We also derive a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the condensate wavefunction that includes the damping effects due to collisions between atoms in the condensate and the thermally excited quasiparticles. For a uniform Bose gas, our kinetic equation for the thermally excited quasiparticles reduces to that found by Eckern as well as Kirkpatrick and Dorfman.

Rigorous Density Functional Theory for Inhomogeneous Bose-Condensed Fluids

The density functional theory originally developed by Hohenberg, Kohn and Sham provides a rigorous conceptual framework for dealing with inhomogeneous interacting Fermi systems. We extend this approach to deal with inhomogeneous interacting Bose-condensed systems, limiting this presentation to setting up the formalism to deal with ground state $(T=0)$ properties. The key new feature is that one must deal with energy functionals of both the local density $n({\bf r})$ and the local complex macroscopic wavefunction $Φ({\bf r})$ associated with the Bose broken-symmetry (the local condensate density is $n_{c}({\bf r}) = \vert Φ({\bf r}) \vert ^{2}$). Implementing the Kohn-Sham scheme, we reduce the problem to a gas of weakly-interacting Bosons moving in self-consistent diagonal and off-diagonal one-body potentials. Our formalism should provide the basis for studies of the surface properties of liquid $^4$He as well as the properties of Bose-condensed atomic gases trapped in external potentials.
