Inclusive prompt χc,b(1++)χ_{c,b}(1^{++}) production at the LHC

We study the prompt production of the χc(1+)χ_c(1^+) and χb(1+)χ_b(1^+) mesons at high energies. Unlike χ(0+,2+)χ(0^+,2^+) production, χ(1+)χ(1^+) mesons cannot be created at LO via the fusion of two on-mass-shell gluons, that is gg→χc,b(1+)gg\toχ_{c,b}(1^+) are not allowed. However, the available experimental data show that the cross sections for χc(1+)χ_c(1^+) and χc(2+)χ_c(2^+) are comparable. We therefore investigate four other χ(1+)χ(1^+) production mechanisms: namely, (i) the standard NLO process gg→χc,b(1+)+ggg\toχ_{c,b}(1^+)+g, (ii) via gluon virtuality, (iii) via gluon reggeization and, finally, (iv) the possibility to form χc,b(1+)χ_{c,b}(1^+) by the fusion of three gluons, where one extra gluon comes from another parton cascade, as in the Double Parton Scattering processes.

Treatment of heavy quarks in QCD

We show that to correctly describe the effects of the heavy-quark mass, m_h, in DGLAP evolution, it is necessary to work in the so-called `physical' scheme. In this way, we automatically obtain a smooth transition through the heavy-quark thresholds. Moreover, we show that to obtain NLO accuracy, it is sufficient to account for the heavy-quark mass, m_h, just in the LO (one-loop) splitting function. The use of the MS-bar factorisation scheme is not appropriate, since at NLO we deal with a mixture of quarks and gluon (that is, the mass of the heavy parton is not well-defined). The formulae for the explicit m_h dependence of the splitting functions, and for alpha_s, are presented.

Gluon distribution at very small x from C-even quarkonia production at the LHC

C-parity-even quarkonia eta_b,c and chi_b,c with spin 0 and 2 are produced via two-gluon fusion. The expected cross section of the inclusive production of the quarkonia at the LHC, times the branching ratios of convenient decays, is up to tens of nanobarn per unit rapidity in the case of charmonia and around one nanobarn for the bottomonia. Measuring the quarkonia production as function of rapidity will allow to determine the gluon distribution function in nucleons in a very broad range of the Bjorken x from x~10^(-2) where it is already known, down to x~10^(-6) where it is totally unknown. The scale of the gluon distribution found from such measurements turns out to be rather low, Q^2 ~ 2.5 - 3 GeV^2, for charmonia and rather large, Q^2 ~ 20 GeV^2$, for bottomonia. We evaluate the scale by studying the next-to-leading-order production cross sections.

On the dual variables description of Yang-Mills theory

The partition function of four dimensional SO(4) Yang-Mills theory is rewritten in terms of variables admitting straightforward relation to the partition function of pure 4D gravity. The gauge action turns into first-order Hilbert-Palatini action for Einstein gravity with a simple extra term added. The proposed relation can be substantiated as a duality for the partition functions provided a special gauge is imposed for the gravity. The same method allows to find a closed expression for the partition function of the SO(4) gauge theory.

A new window at the LHC: BSM signals using tagged protons

The signature at the LHC of many Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) scenarios is events with large missing energy. If the forward outgoing protons are measured, we show that the production and decay of BSM particles in the central rapidity interval, with gaps in rapidity either side, offers certain advantages over inclusive production, to search for signals (a) with missing longitudinal 4-momentum (typical of invisible Higgs production), and (b) for new light pseudoscalar bosons.

Generalised parton distributions at small x

We justify the practical use of the Shuvaev integral transform approach to calculate the skewed distributions, needed to describe diffractive processes, directly from the conventional diagonal global parton distributions. We address doubts which have been raised about this procedure. We emphasise that the approach, on the one hand, satisfies all theoretical reqirements, and, on the other hand, is consistent with DVCS data at NLO. We construct an easily accessible package for the computation of these skewed distributions.

Heavy Flavour Production in pp and Heavy Ion Collisions in QCD Up to LHC Energies

Charm production in pp collisions is considered in the framework of perturbative QCD. The values of two parameters, the charm quark mass mcm_c and the QCD scale mu^2, are determined from the comparison of the theoretical calculations with experimental data. The RHIC data on charm and beauty production are compared with the k_T-factorization approach predictions and with standard NLO QCD. The calculated results underestimate the STAR Collaboration data. The role of possible nuclear effects is discussed. The predictions for LHC energies are also given.

Higgs Boson as a Dilaton

We study possible phenomenological consequences of the recently proposed new approach to the Weinberg-Salam model. The electroweak theory is considered as a gravity and the Higgs particle is interpreted in it as a dilaton, without the usual potential of interaction in the Higgs sector. We have taken as a test the process of photons pair production, e++e−→Z+γ+γe^+ + e^- \to Z + γ+ γ. In the framework of new formulation this reaction is mediated in the lowest order by the dilaton. The cross section is found to be rather small.

Heavy Quark Hadroproduction in kTk_T-Factorization Approach with Unintegrated Gluon Distributions

We consider the processes of compare the heavy quark production using the unintegrated gluon distributions. The numerical predictions for high energy nucleon-nucleon and photon-nucleon collisions of the kTk_T-factorization approach (semihard theory) are compared with the experimental data from Tevatron-collider and HERA. The total production cross sections and pTp_T distributions are considered and they are in reasonable agreement with the data for rather value of QCD scale.

Comparison of kTk_T-Factorization Approach and QCD Parton Model for Charm and Beauty Hadroproduction

We compare the numerical predictions for heavy quark production in high energy hadron collisions of the conventional QCD parton model and the kTk_T-factorization approach (semihard theory). The total production cross sections, one-particle rapidity and pTp_T distributions as well as two-particle correlations are considered. The difference in the predictions of the two approaches is not very large, while the shapes of the distributions are slightly different.

Charm Hadroproduction in kTk_T-Factorization Approach

We compare the theoretical status and the numerical predictions of two approaches for heavy quark production in the high energy hadron collisions, namely the conventional LO parton model with collinear approximation and kTk_T-factorization approach. The main assumptions used in the calculations are discussed. To extract the differences coming from the matrix elements we use very simple gluon structure function and fixed coupling. It is shown that the kTk_T-factorization approach calculated formally in LO and with Sudakov form factor accounts for many contributions related usually to NLO (and even NNLO) processes of the conventional parton model

Heavy quark pair correlations in QCD

The azimutal correlations of heavy quarks produced in the high energy pppp (ppˉp\bar{p}) collisions are calculated in the framework of QCD without the usual assumptions of the parton model. The virtual nature of the interacting gluons as well as their transverse motion and different polarizations are taken into account. We give some predictions for the azimutal correlations of charm and beauty hadrons produced at Tevatron-collider and LHC.

Heavy Quark Production in Parton Model and in QCD

The cross sections of heavy quark production in pppp collision and for their photo- and electroproduction are calculated in the framework of QCD. The virtual nature of the interacting gluons as well as their transverse motion and different polarizations are taken into account. The obtained cross sections exhibit more rapid growth with the initial energy than the parton model predictions and the pTp_T distributions of produced heavy quarks are more smooth.
