Static Spherically Symmetric Einstein-aether models II: Integrability and the Modified Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff approach

We investigate the existence of analytic solutions for the field equations in the Einstein-æther theory for a static spherically symmetric spacetime and provide a detailed dynamical system analysis of the field equations. In particular, we investigate if the gravitational field equations in the Einstein-æther model in the static spherically symmetric spacetime possesses the Painlevè property, so that an analytic explicit integration can be performed. We find that analytic solutions can be presented in terms of Laurent expansion only when the matter source consists of a perfect fluid with linear equation of state (EoS) $μ=μ_{0}+\left( \texttt{h} -1\right) p,~\texttt{h} >1$. In order to study the field equations we apply the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) approach and other approaches. We find that the relativistic TOV equations are drastically modified in Einstein-æther theory, and we explore the physical implications of this modification. We study perfect fluid models with a scalar field with an exponential potential. We discuss all of the equilibrium points and discuss their physical properties.

Mathematical Properties of a Class of Four-dimensional Neutral Signature Metrics

While the Lorenzian and Riemanian metrics for which all polynomial scalar curvature invariants vanish (the VSI property) are well-studied, less is known about the four-dimensional neutral signature metrics with the VSI property. Recently it was shown that the neutral signature metrics belong to two distinct subclasses: the Walker and Kundt metrics. In this paper we have chosen an example from each of the two subcases of the Ricci-flat VSI Walker metrics respectively. To investigate the difference between the metrics we determine the existence of a null, geodesic, expansion-free, shear-free and vorticity-free vector, and classify these spaces using their infinitesimal holonomy algebras. The geometric implications of the holonomy algebras are further studied by identifying the recurrent or covariantly constant null vectors, whose existence is required by the holonomy structure in each example. We conclude the paper with a simple example of the equivalence algorithm for these pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, which is the only approach to classification that provides all necessary information to determine equivalence.

On the Action, Topology and Geometric Invariants in Quantum Gravity

The action in general relativity (GR), which is an integral over the manifold plus an integral over the boundary, is a global object and is only well defined when the topology is fixed. Therefore, to use the action in GR and in most approaches to quantum gravity (QG) based on a covariant Lorentzian action, there needs to exist a prefered (global) timelike vector, and hence a global topology $R \times S^3$, for it to make sense. This is especially true in the Hamiltonian formulation of QG. Therefore, in order to do canonical quantization, we need to know the topology, appropriate boundary conditions and (in an open manifold) the conditions at infinity, which affects the fundamental geometrical scalar invariants of the spacetime (and especially those which may occur in the QG action).

Unimodular Gravity and Averaging

The question of the averaging of inhomogeneous spacetimes in cosmology is important for the correct interpretation of cosmological data. In this paper we suggest a conceptually simpler approach to averaging in cosmology based on the averaging of scalars within unimodular gravity. As an illustration, we consider the example of an exact spherically symmetric dust model, and show that within this approach averaging introduces correlations (corrections) to the effective dynamical evolution equation in the form of a spatial curvature term.

Curvature operators and scalar curvature invariants

We continue the study of the question of when a pseudo-Riemannain manifold can be locally characterised by its scalar polynomial curvature invariants (constructed from the Riemann tensor and its covariant derivatives). We make further use of alignment theory and the bivector form of the Weyl operator in higher dimensions, and introduce the important notions of diagonalisability and (complex) analytic metric extension. We show that if there exists an analytic metric extension of an arbitrary dimensional space of any signature to a Riemannian space (of Euclidean signature), then that space is characterised by its scalar curvature invariants. In particular, we discuss the Lorentzian case and the neutral signature case in four dimensions in more detail.

No Chaos in Brane-World Cosmology

We discuss the asymptotic dynamical evolution of spatially homogeneous brane-world cosmological models close to the initial singularity. We find that generically the cosmological singularity is isotropic in Bianchi type IX brane-world models and consequently these models do not exhibit Mixmaster or chaotic-like behaviour close to the initial singularity. We argue that this is typical of more general cosmological models in the brane-world scenario. In particular, we show that an isotropic singularity is a past-attractor in all orthogonal Bianchi models and is a local past-attractor in a class of inhomogeneous brane-world models.
