Radio Dichotomy in Quasars with H$β$ FWHM greater than $15,000$ km\,s$^{-1}$

It has been inferred from large unbiased samples that $10\%$-$15\%$ of all quasars are radio-loud (RL). Using the quasar catalog from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we show that the radio-loud fraction (RLF) for high broad line (HBL) quasars, containing H$β$ FWHM greater than $15,000$ km s$^{-1}$, is $\sim 57 \%$. While there is no significant difference between the RL and radio-quiet (RQ) populations in our sample in terms of their black hole mass, Eddington ratio, and covering fraction (CF), optical continuum luminosity of the RL quasars are higher. The similarity in the distribution of their CF indicates that our analysis is unbiased in terms of the viewing angle of the HBL RL and RQ quasars. Hence, we conclude that the accretion disc luminosity of the RL quasars in our HBL sample is higher, which indicates a connection between a brighter disc and a more prominent jet. By comparing them with the non-HBL H$β$ broad emission line quasars, we find that the HBL sources have the lowest Eddington ratios in addition to having a very high RLF. That is consistent with the theories of jet formation, in which jets are launched from low Eddington ratio accreting systems. We find that the [O III] narrow emission line is stronger in the RL compared to RQ quasars in our HBL sample, which is consistent with previous findings in the literature, and may be caused by the interaction of the narrow line gas with the jet.

Relativistic Normal Coupled-cluster Theory Analysis of Second- and Third-order Electric Polarizabilities of Zn I

We present precise values of electric polarizabilities for the ground state of Zn due to second-order dipole and quadrupole interactions, and due to third-order dipole-quadrupole interactions. These quantities are evaluated in the linear response theory framework by employing a relativistic version of the normal coupled-cluster (NCC) method. The calculated dipole polarizability value is compared with available experimental and other theoretical results including those are obtained using the ordinary coupled-cluster (CC) methods in both finite-field and expectation value evaluation approaches. We also give a term-by-term comparison of contributions from our CC and NCC calculations in order to show differences in the results from these two methods. Moreover, we present results from other lower-order methods to understand the role of electron correlation effects in the determination of the above quantities. A machine learning based scheme to generate optimized basis functions for atomic calculations is developed and applied here. From the analysis of the dipole polarizability result, accuracy of the calculated quadrupole and third-order polarizability values are ascertained, for which no experimental values are currently available.

Shape coexistence in 153Ho

The high-spin states in 153Ho, have been studied by 139 57 La(20Ne, 6n) reaction at a projectile energy of 139 MeV at Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC), Kolkata, India, utilizing an earlier campaign of Indian National Gamma Array (INGA) setup. Data from gamma-gamma coincidence, directional correlation and polarization measurements have been analyzed to assign and confirm the spins and parities of the levels. We have suggested a few additions and revisions of the reported level scheme of 153Ho. The RF-gamma time difference spectra have been useful to confirm the half-life of an isomer in this nucleus. From the comparison of experimental and theoretical results, it is found that there are definite indications of shape coexistence in this nucleus. The experimental and calculated lifetimes of several isomers have been compared to follow the coexistence and evolution of shape with increasing spin.

Study of magnetic field geometry and extinction in Bok globule CB130

We trace the peripheral magnetic field structure of Bok globule CB130, by estimating the linear polarization of its field stars in the R band. The magnetic field orientation sampled by these stars, aligned on average among themselves and the polarization produced within the cloud has a different direction from that of Galactic plane with an offset of 53$^\circ$. The offset between minor axis and the mean magnetic field of CB130 is found to be 80$^\circ$. The estimated strength of the magnetic field in the plane-of-the-sky is $\sim$ 116$\pm$19 $μ$G. We constructed the visual extinction map using Near Infrared Color Excess (NICE) method to see the dust distribution around CB130. Contours of Herschel {Herschel is an ESA space observatory with science instruments provided by European-led Principal Investigator consortia and with important participation from NASA} SPIRE 500$μ$m dust continuum emission maps of this cloud is over-plotted on the visual extinction map which shows the regions having higher optical extinction corresponds to higher densities of dust. Three distinct high dust density cores (named as C1, C2, and C3) are identified in the extinction map. It is observed that the cores C1 and C3 located close to two previously known cores CB130-1 and CB130-2 respectively. Estimate of visual extinction of some moderately obscured stars of CB130 are made utilizing near-infra red photometry. Its observed that there is a feeble dependence of polarization on extinction; and polarization efficiency (defined as $ \textit{p}$/A$ {V}$) of the dust grains decreases with the increase in extinction.

Java application for the superposition T-matrix code to study the optical properties of cosmic dust aggregates

In this paper, we report the development of a java application for the Superposition T-matrix code, JaSTA (Java Superposition T-matrix App), to study the light scattering properties of aggregate structures. It has been developed using Netbeans 7.1.2, which is a java integrated development environment (IDE). The JaSTA uses double precession superposition codes for multi-sphere clusters in random orientation developed by Mackowski and Mischenko (1996). It consists of a graphical user interface (GUI) in the front hand and a database of related data in the back hand. Both the interactive GUI and database package directly enable a user to model by self-monitoring respective input parameters (namely, wavelength, complex refractive indices, grain size, etc.) to study the related optical properties of cosmic dust (namely, extinction, polarization, etc.) instantly, i.e., with zero computational time. This increases the efficiency of the user. The database of JaSTA is now created for a few sets of input parameters with a plan to create a large database in future. This application also has an option where users can compile and run the scattering code directly for aggregates in GUI environment. The JaSTA aims to provide convenient and quicker data analysis of the optical properties which can be used in different fields like planetary science, atmospheric science, nano science, etc. The current version of this software is developed for the Linux and Windows platform to study the light scattering properties of small aggregates which will be extended for larger aggregates using parallel codes in future.

Study of background star polarization and polarization efficiency of three selected Bok globules CB56, CB60 and CB69

We present the polarization maps of three selected Bok globules CB56, CB60 and CB69 constructed using a V-band data from a CCD imaging polarimeter. The aim of this work is to measure the optical polarization ($p_v$) of background field stars in order to determine the polarization efficiency, $p_v/A_v$. We find that the local magnetic field of the cloud CB56 is almost aligned with the galactic field, but not in CB60 and CB69. A trend of decreasing polarization efficiency with increasing extinction ($A_v$) is observed: it can be well represented by a power law, $p_v/A_v \propto A_v^{-α}$, where $α= -0.56 \pm 0.36$, $-0.59 \pm 0.51$ and $-0.52 \pm 0.49$ for CB56, CB60 and CB69 respectively. This indicates that the linear polarization of the starlight due to aligned dust grains in these clouds is produced more efficiently in low extinction regions, compared with high obscured lines of sight.

Linear Polarization Measurements for High-Spin States in 146Gd

A γ-ray linear polarization measurement has been performed to directly determine the parities for the levels in 146Gd nucleus. High-spin states in this nucleus were populated in a reaction 115In + 34S at 140 MeV incident energy. Linearly polarized γ - rays emitted from oriented states were measured using a Compton polarimeter consisting of an array of 8 Compton-suppressed Clover detectors. Unambiguous assignments of the spin and parity have been made for most of the observed levels and changes made in the previously reported spin-parity assignments for a few levels. Shell model calculations performed with judicious truncation over the π(gdsh) valence space interpret the structure of only the low-lying levels up to Jπ = 19+ and 9-. N = 82 neutron-core breaking is found to be essential for high spin states with excitation energies Ex > 7 MeV.

Polarimetric studies of Comet C/2009 P1 (Garradd)

We present the optical imaging polarimetric observations of comet C/2009 P1(Garradd) at three different phase angles e.g., 28.2$^\circ$, 28.1$^\circ$ and 21.6$^\circ$. The observations were carried out using IUCAA Faint Object Spectrograph and Camera mounted on Cassegrain focus of the 2-m Telescope of IGO, IUCAA, Pune in R$_{comet}$, R photometric bands, on 21 and 22 March 2012 and ARIES Imaging Polarimeter mounted on Cassegrain focus of the 1.04-m Sampurnanand Telescope of ARIES, Nainital in R photometric band, on 23 May 2012. We show the presence of a jet activity in the rotational gradient treated image of comet Garradd at phase angle 28.1$^\circ$. These jets are mainly oriented towards the Sun and extended up to $\sim$ 5100 km from the cometary photocenter. The antisolar extension of jet seems to be fainter, which is extended up to $\sim$ 1800 km. It is found that the comet Garradd shows negative polarization at phase angle 21.6$^\circ$. The degree of polarization derived for Garradd is in good agreement with other comets at nearly similar phase angles e.g., comets 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, 22P/Kopff, 1P/Halley, C/1990 K1 (Levy), 4P/Faye, and C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) at phase angle $\sim$ 28$^\circ$, and 47P/Ashbrook-Jackson at phase angle $\sim$ 21.6$^\circ$, respectively. It is also found that the degree of polarization of dusty coma of comet Garradd at phase angle $\sim$ 28$^\circ$ is high but, not as high as in the case of comet Hale-Bopp.

The electric dipole response of $^{76}$Se above 4 MeV

The dipole response of $^{76}_{34}$Se in the energy range 4 to 9 MeV has been analyzed using a $(\vecγ,γ')$ polarized photon scattering technique, performed at the High Intensity $γ$-Ray Source facility, to complement previous work performed using unpolarized photons. The results of this work offer both an enhanced sensitivity scan of the dipole response and an unambiguous determination of the parities of the observed J=1 states. The dipole response is found to be dominated by $E1$ excitations, and can reasonably be attributed to a pygmy dipole resonance. Evidence is presented to suggest that a significant amount of directly unobserved excitation strength is present in the region, due to unobserved branching transitions in the decays of resonantly excited states. The dipole response of the region is underestimated when considering only ground state decay branches. We investigate the electric dipole response theoretically, performing calculations in a 3D cartesian-basis time-dependent Skyrme-Hartree-Fock framework.

Study of nuclei in the vicinity of the "Island of Inversion" through fusion-evaporation reaction

We report the first observation of high-spin states in nuclei in the vicinity of the "island of inversion", populated via the 18O+18O fusion reaction at an incident beam energy of 34 MeV. The fusion reaction mechanism circumvents the limitations of non-equilibrated reactions used to populate these nuclei. Detailed spin-parity measurements in these difficult to populate nuclei have been possible from the observed coincidence anisotropy and the linear polarization measurements. The spectroscopy of 33,34P and 33S is presented in detail along with the results of calculations within the shell model framework.
