Fixed points and stability in the two-network frustrated Kuramoto model

We examine a modification of the Kuramoto model for phase oscillators coupled on a network. Here, two populations of oscillators are considered, each with different network topologies, internal and cross-network couplings and frequencies. Additionally, frustration parameters for the interactions of the cross-network phases are introduced. This may be regarded as a model of competing populations: internal to any one network phase synchronisation is a target state, while externally one or both populations seek to frequency synchronise to a phase in relation to the competitor. We conduct fixed point analyses for two regimes: one, where internal phase synchronisation occurs for each population with the potential for instability in the phase of one population in relation to the other; the second where one part of a population remains fixed in phase in relation to the other population, but where instability may occur within the first population leading to `fragmentation'. We compare analytic results to numerical solutions for the system at various critical thresholds.

Landau gauge Jacobian and BRST symmetry

We propose a generalisation of the Faddeev-Popov trick for Yang-Mills fields in the Landau gauge. The gauge-fixing is achieved as a genuine change of variables. In particular the Jacobian that appears is the modulus of the standard Faddeev-Popov determinant. We give a path integral representation of this in terms of auxiliary bosonic and Grassman fields extended beyond the usual set for standard Landau gauge BRST. The gauge-fixing Lagrangian density appearing in this context is local and enjoys a new extended BRST and anti-BRST symmetry though the gauge-fixing Lagrangian density in this case is not BRST exact.

Realisation of chiral symmetry in the domain model of QCD

The domain model for the QCD vacuum has previously been developed and shown to exhibit confinement of quarks and strong correlation of the local chirality of quark modes and duality of the background domain-like gluon field. Quark fluctuations satisfy a chirality violating boundary conditions parametrized by a random chiral angle $α_j$ on the $j-th$ domain. The free energy of an ensemble of $N\to\infty$ domains depends on $\{α_j, j=1... N\}$ through the logarithm of the quark determinant. Its parity odd part is given by the axial anomaly. The anomaly contribution to the free energy suppresses continuous axial U(1) degeneracy in the ground state, leaving only a residual axial Z(2) symmetry. This discrete symmetry and flavour $SU(N_f)_L\times SU(N_f)_R$ chiral symmetry in turn are spontaneously broken with a quark condensate arising due to the asymmetry of the spectrum of Dirac operator. In order to illustrate the splitting between the $η'$ from octet pseudoscalar mesons realised in the domain model, we estimate the masses of light pseudoscalar and vector mesons.
