An above-barrier narrow resonance in 15^{15}F

Intense and purified radioactive beam of post-accelerated 14^{14}O was used to study the low-lying states in the unbound 15^{15}F nucleus. Exploiting resonant elastic scattering in inverse kinematics with a thick target, the second excited state, a resonance at E_R\_R=4.757(6)(10)~MeV with a width of ΓΓ=36(5)(14)~keV was measured for the first time with high precision. The structure of this narrow above-barrier state in a nucleus located two neutrons beyond the proton drip line was investigated using the Gamow Shell Model in the coupled channel representation with a 12^{12}C core and three valence protons. It is found that it is an almost pure wave function of two quasi-bound protons in the 2s_1/22s\_{1/2} shell.

Probing Nuclear forces beyond the drip-line using the mirror nuclei 16^{16}N and 16^{16}F

Radioactive beams of 14^{14}O and 15^{15}O were used to populate the resonant states 1/2+^+, 5/2+^+ and 0−,1−,2−0^-,1^-,2^- in the unbound 15^{15}F and 16^{16}F nuclei respectively by means of proton elastic scattering reactions in inverse kinematics. Based on their large proton spectroscopic factor values, the resonant states in 16^{16}F can be viewed as a core of 14^{14}O plus a proton in the 2s1/2_{1/2} or 1d5/2_{5/2} shell and a neutron in 1p1/2_{1/2}. Experimental energies were used to derive the strength of the 2s1/2_{1/2}-1p1/2_{1/2} and 1d5/2_{5/2}-1p1/2_{1/2} proton-neutron interactions. It is found that the former changes by 40% compared with the mirror nucleus 16^{16}N, and the second by 10%. This apparent symmetry breaking of the nuclear force between mirror nuclei finds explanation in the role of the large coupling to the continuum for the states built on an ℓ=0\ell=0 proton configuration.

First direct lifetime measurement of the 2+1 state in 72,74Zn: new evidence for shape transition between N = 40 and N = 42 close to Z = 28

We report here the first direct lifetime measurement of the 2+1 state in 72,74Zn. The neutron-rich beam was produced by in-flight fragmentation of 76Ge at the Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds and separated with the LISE spectrometer. The 2+1 state was excited by inelastic scattering and knock-out reaction on a CD2 target and its lifetime was measured by the recoil-distance Dopplershift method with the Köln plunger device combined with the EXOGAM detectors. The lifetimes of the 2+1 states in 72,74Zn were determined to be 17.9(18) and 27.0(24) ps, which correspond to reduced transition probabilities B(E2; 2+1 \rightarrow 0+) = 385(39) and 370(33) e2fm4, respectively. These values support the idea of a systematic maximum of collectivity at N = 42 for Zn, Ge and Se nuclei. In addition, the available systematics in the neighboring nuclei point towards a transition from a spherical oscillator at N = 40 to complete γ-softness at N = 42.

In-beam spectroscopic studies of 44^{44}S nucleus

The structure of the 44^{44}S nucleus has been studied at GANIL through the one proton knock-out reaction from a 45^{45}Cl secondary beam at 42 A⋅\cdotMeV. The γγ rays following the de-excitation of 44^{44}S were detected in flight using the 70 BaF2{_2} detectors of the Château de Cristal array. An exhaustive γγγγ-coincidence analysis allowed an unambiguous construction of the level scheme up to an excitation energy of 3301 keV. The existence of the spherical 22+^+_2 state is confirmed and three new γγ-ray transitions connecting the prolate deformed 21+^+_1 level were observed. Comparison of the experimental results to shell model calculations further supports a prolate and spherical shape coexistence with a large mixing of states built on the ground state band in 44^{44}S.

Search for Superscreening effect in Superconductor

The decay of 19^{19}O(β−β^-) and 19^{19}Ne(β+β^+) implanted in niobium in its superconducting and metallic phase was measured using purified radioactive beams produced by the SPIRAL/GANIL facility. Half-lives and branching ratios measured in the two phases are consistent within one-sigma error bar. This measurement casts strong doubts on the predicted strong electron screening in superconductor, the so-called superscreening. The measured difference in screening potential energy is 110(90) eV for 19^{19}Ne and 400(320) eV for 19^{19}O. Precise determinations of the half-lives were obtained for 19^{19}O: 26.476(9) s and 19^{19}Ne: 17.254(5) s.

Unveiling the intruder deformed 02+^+_2 state in 34^{34}Si

The 02+^+_2 state in 34^{34}Si has been populated at the {\sc Ganil/Lise3} facility through the ββ-decay of a newly discovered 1+^+ isomer in 34^{34}Al of 26(1) ms half-life. The simultaneous detection of e+e−e^+e^- pairs allowed the determination of the excitation energy E(02+^+_2)=2719(3) keV and the half-life T1/2_{1/2}=19.4(7) ns, from which an electric monopole strength of ρ2ρ^2(E0)=13.0(0.9)×10−3\times10^{-3} was deduced. The 21+^+_1 state is observed to decay both to the 01+^+_1 ground state and to the newly observed 02+^+_2 state (via a 607(2) keV transition) with a ratio R(21+^+_1→01+/21+\rightarrow0^+_1/2^+_1→02+\rightarrow0^+_2)=1380(717). Gathering all information, a weak mixing with the 01+^+_1 and a large deformation parameter of ββ=0.29(4) are found for the 02+^+_2 state, in good agreement with shell model calculations using a new {\sc sdpf-u-mix} interaction allowing \textit{np-nh} excitations across the N=20 shell gap.

Prolate-Spherical Shape Coexistence at N=28 in 44^{44}S

The structure of 44^{44}S has been studied using delayed γγ and electron spectroscopy at \textsc{ganil}. The decay rates of the 02+^+_2 isomeric state to the 21+^+_1 and 01+^+_1 states have been measured for the first time, leading to a reduced transition probability B(E2~:~21+^{+}_1→\rightarrow02+)^{+}_2)= 8.4(26)~e2^2fm4^4 and a monopole strength ρ2ρ^2(E0~:~02+^{+}_2→\rightarrow01+)^{+}_1) =~8.7(7)×\times10−3^{-3}. Comparisons to shell model calculations point towards prolate-spherical shape coexistence and a phenomenological two level mixing model is used to extract a weak mixing between the two configurations.

New pathway to bypass the 15O waiting point

We propose the sequential reaction process 15^{15}O(pp,γ)(β+γ)(β^{+})16^{16}O as a new pathway to bypass of the 15^{15}O waiting point. This exotic reaction is found to have a surprisingly high cross section, approximately 1010^{10} times higher than the 15^{15}O(pp,β+β^{+})16^{16}O. These cross sections were calculated after precise measurements of energies and widths of the proton-unbound 16^{16}F low lying states, obtained using the H(15^{15}O,p)15^{15}O reaction. The large (p,γ)(β+)(p,γ)(β^{+}) cross section can be understood to arise from the more efficient feeding of the low energy wing of the ground state resonance by the gamma decay. The implications of the new reaction in novae explosions and X-ray bursts are discussed.
