Correlated stability conjecture revisited

Correlated stability conjecture (CSC) proposed by Gubser and Mitra [1,2] linked the thermodynamic and classical (in)stabilities of black branes. The classical instabilities, whenever occurring, were conjectured to arise as Gregory-Laflamme (GL) instabilities of translationally invariant horizons. In [3] it was shown that the thermodynamic instabilities, specifically the negative specific heat, indeed result in the instabilities in the hydrodynamic spectrum of holographically dual plasma excitations. A counter-example of CSC was presented in the context of black branes with scalar hair undergoing a second-order phase transition [4]. In this paper we discuss a related counter-example of CSC conjecture, where a thermodynamically stable translationally invariant horizon has a genuine tachyonic instability. We study the spectrum of quasinormal excitations of a black brane undergoing a continuous phase transition, and explicitly identify the instability. We compute the critical exponents of the critical momenta and the frequency of the unstable fluctuations and identify the dynamical critical exponent of the model.

Critical phenomena in N=2* plasma

We use gauge theory/string theory correspondence to study finite temperature critical behaviour of mass deformed N=4 SU(N) supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling, also known as N=2* gauge theory. For certain range of the mass parameters, N=2* plasma undergoes a second-order phase transition. We compute all the static critical exponents of the model and demonstrate that the transition is of the mean-field theory type. We show that the dynamical critical exponent of the model is z=0, with multiple hydrodynamic relaxation rates at criticality. We point out that the dynamical critical phenomena in N=2* plasma is outside the dynamical universality classes established by Hohenberg and Halperin.

Radiative Corrections in Vector-Tensor Models

We consider a two-form antisymmetric tensor field ϕminimally coupled to a non-abelian vector field with a field strength F. Canonical analysis suggests that a pseudoscalar mass term \frac{μ^2}{2} \tr (ϕ\wedge ϕ) for the tensor field eliminates degrees of freedom associated with this field. Explicit one loop calculations show that an additional coupling m\tr(ϕ\wedge F) (which can be eliminated classically by a tensor field shift) reintroduces tensor field degrees of freedom. We attribute this to the lack of the renormalizability in our vector-tensor model. We also explore a vector-tensor model with a tensor field scalar mass term \frac {μ^2}{2} \tr (ϕ\wedge\star ϕ) and coupling m\tr(ϕ\wedge \star F). We comment on the Stueckelberg mechanism for mass generation in the Abelian version of the latter model.

Transport at criticality

We study second order phase transitions in non-conformal holographic models of gauge theory/string theory correspondence at finite temperature and zero chemical potential. We compute critical exponents of the bulk viscosity near the transition and interpret our results in the framework of available models of dynamical critical phenomena. Intriguingly, although some of the models we discuss belong to different static universality classes, they appear to share the same dynamical critical exponent.

Non-Extremal Gravity Duals for Fractional D3-Branes on the Conifold

The world volume theory on $N$ regular and $M$ fractional D3-branes at the conifold singularity is a non-conformal ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric $SU(N+M)\times SU(N)$ gauge theory. In previous work the extremal Type IIB supergravity dual of this theory at zero temperature was constructed. Regularity of the solution requires a deformation of the conifold: this is a reflection of the chiral symmetry breaking. To study the non-zero temperature generalizations non-extremal solutions have to be considered, and in the high temperature phase the chiral symmetry is expected to be restored. Such a solution is expected to have a regular Schwarzschild horizon. We construct an ansatz necessary to study such non-extremal solutions and show that the simplest possible solution has a singular horizon. We derive the system of second order equations in the radial variable whose solutions may have regular horizons.
