A Larger Extent for the Ophiuchus Stream

We present new kinematic data for the Ophiuchus stellar stream. Spectra have been taken of member candidates at the MMT telescope using Hectospec, Hectochelle and Binospec, which provide more than 1800 new velocities. Combined with proper motion measurements of stars in the field by the Gaia - DR2 catalog, we have derived stream membership probabilities, resulting in the detection of more than 200 likely members. These data show the stream extends to more than three times the length shown in the discovery data. A spur to the main stream is also detected. The high resolution spectra allow us to resolve the stellar velocity dispersion, found to be $1.6 \pm 0.3 $ km/sec.

At the survey limits: discovery of the Aquarius 2 dwarf galaxy in the VST ATLAS and the SDSS data

We announce the discovery of the Aquarius~2 dwarf galaxy, a new distant satellite of the Milky Way, detected on the fringes of the VST ATLAS and the SDSS surveys. The object was originally identified as an overdensity of Red Giant Branch stars, but chosen for subsequent follow-up based on the presence of a strong Blue Horizontal Branch, which was also used to measure its distance of $\sim 110$ kpc. Using deeper imaging from the IMACS camera on the 6.5m Baade and spectroscopy with DEIMOS on Keck, we measured the satellite's half-light radius $5.1\pm 0.8$ arcmin, or $\sim 160$ pc at this distance, and its stellar velocity dispersion of $5.4^{+3.4}_{-0.9}$ km s$^{-1}$. With $μ=30.2$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$ and $M_V=-4.36$, the new satellite lies close to two important detection limits: one in surface brightness; and one in luminosity at a given distance, thereby making Aquarius~2 one of the hardest dwarfs to find.

Globular Cluster Streams as Galactic High-Precision Scales

Tidal streams of globular clusters are ideal tracers of the Galactic gravitational potential. Compared to the few known, complex and diffuse dwarf-galaxy streams, they are kinematically cold, have thin morphologies and are abundant in the halo of the Milky Way. Their coldness and thinness in combination with potential epicyclic substructure in the vicinity of the stream progenitor turns them into high-precision scales. With the example of Palomar 5, we demonstrate how modeling of a globular cluster stream allows us to simultaneously measure the properties of the disrupting globular cluster, its orbital motion, and the gravitational potential of the Milky Way.

Electronic absorption spectra of hydrogenated protonated naphthalene and proflavine

We study hydrogenated cations of two polycyclic hydrocarbon molecules as models of hydrogenated organic species that form in the interstellar medium. Optical spectra of the hydrogenated naphthalene cation Hn-C10H8^+ for n=1,2, and 10, as well as of the astrobiologically interesting hydrogenated proflavine cation Hn-C13H11N3^+ for n=1 and 14, are calculated. The pseudopotential time dependent density functional theory is used. It is found that the fully hydrogenated proflavine cation H14-C13H11N3^+ shows a broad spectrum where positions of individual lines are almost lost. The positions of lines, their shapes, and intensities change in hydronaphthalene and hydroproflavine cations showing that hydrogen additions induce substantially different optical spectra in a comparison to base polycyclic hydrocarbon cations. One calculated line in the visible spectrum of H10-C10H8^+, and one in the visible spectrum of H-C13H11N3^+ are close to the measured diffuse interstellar bands. We also present positions of near-UV lines.

Optical spectrum of proflavine and its ions

Motivated by possible astrophysical and biological applications we calculate visible and near UV spectral lines of proflavine (C13H11N3, 3,6-diaminoacridine) in vacuum, as well as its anion, cation, and dication. The pseudopotential density functional and time-dependent density functional methods are used. We find a good agreement in spectral line positions calculated by two real-time propagation methods and the Lanczos chain method. Spectra of proflavine and its ions show characteristic UV lines which are good candidates for a detection of these molecules in interstellar space and various biological processes.
