Frascati 22 GeV Workshop Summary

This document summarizes the outcomes of the "Science at the Luminosity Frontier: Jefferson Lab at 22 GeV" workshop, held at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati in December 2024. The primary goal of the workshop was to critically assess and refine the scientific case for a proposed energy upgrade of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) to 22 GeV. This document intends to capture the progress on developing the scientific case since the publication of a lengthy "White Paper" in summer 2024 signed by about 450 authors.

Elastic meson form factors in a unified scheme

The extraction of elastic form factors for mesons in the context of the contact interaction model is revisited in this manuscript. The dressed masses of quarks and mesons are determined through the gap and Bethe-Salpeter equations. The generic elastic scattering process $Mγ\to M$ is studied for the meson $M$ formed of two differently flavored quarks. The charge radii of scalar, pseudoscalar, vector and axial-vector mesons are also extracted by virtue of explicit calculation of the meson elastic form factors.

Pseudo-scalar mesons: light front wave functions, GPDs and PDFs

We develop a unified algebraic model which satisfactorily describes the internal structure of pion and kaon as well as heavy quarkonia ($η_c$ and $η_b$). For each of these mesons, we compute their generalized parton distributions (GPDs), built through the overlap representation of their light-front wave function, tightly constrained by the modern and precise knowledge of their quark distribution amplitudes. From this three-dimensional knowledge of mesons, we deduce parton distribution functions (PDFs) as well as electromagnetic form factors and construct the impact parameter space GPDs. The PDFs for mesons formed with light quarks are then evolved from the hadronic scale of around 0.3 GeV to 5.2 GeV, probed in experiments. We make explicit comparisons with experimental results available and with earlier theoretical predictions.

Contribution of neutral pseudoscalar mesons to $a_μ^{HLbL}$ within a Schwinger-Dyson equations approach to QCD

A continuum approach to Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), based upon Schwinger-Dyson (SD) and Bethe-Salpeter (BS) equations, is employed to provide a tightly constrained prediction for the $γ^{*} γ^{*} \rightarrow \{ π^0, η, η', η_c, η_b \}$ transition form factors (TFFs) and their corresponding pole contribution to the hadronic light-by-light (HLbL) piece of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon ($a_μ$). This work relies on a practical and well-tested quark-photon vertex Ansatz approach to evaluate the TFFs for arbitrary space-like photon virtualities, in the impulse approximation. The numerical results are parametrized meticulously, ensuring a reliable evaluation of the HLbL contributions to $a_μ$. We obtain: $a_μ^{π^0-\textrm{pole}} = (6.14 \pm 0.21) \times 10^{-10}$, $a_μ^{η-\textrm{pole}} = (1.47 \pm 0.19) \times 10^{-10}$, $a_μ^{η'-\textrm{pole}} = (1.36 \pm 0.08) \times 10^{-10}$, yielding a total value of $a_μ^{π^0+η+η'-\textrm{pole}} = (8.97 \pm 0.48) \times 10^{-10}$, compatible with contemporary determinations. Notably, we find that $a_μ^{η_c+η_b-\textrm{pole}} \approx a_μ^{η_c-\textrm{pole}} = (0.09 \pm 0.01) \times 10^{-10}$, which might not be negligible once the percent precision in the computation of the light pseudoscalars is reached.

Existence of global solutions and blow-up of solutions for coupled systems of fractional diffusion equations

We study the Cauchy problem for a system of semi-linear coupled fractional-diffusion equations with polynomial nonlinearities posed in $% \mathbb{R}_{+}\times \mathbb{R}^{N}$. Under appropriate conditions on the exponents and the orders of the fractional time derivatives, we present a critical value of the dimension N, for which global solutions with small data exist, otherwise solutions blow-up in finite time. Furthermore, the large time behavior of global solutions is discussed.

Constructing Scalar-Photon Three Point Vertex in Massless Quenched Scalar QED

Non perturbative studies of Schwinger-Dyson equations (SDEs) require their infnite, coupled tower to be truncated in order to reduce them to a practically solvable set. In this connection, a physically acceptable ansatz for the three point vertex is the most favorite choice. Scalar quantum electrodynamics (sQED) provides a simple and neat platform to address this problem. The most general form of the three point scalar-photon vertex can be expressed in terms of only two independent form factors, a longitudinal and a transverse one. Ball and Chiu have demonstrated that the longitudinal vertex is fixed by requiring the Ward-Fradkin-Green-Takahashi identity (WFGTI), while the transverse vertex remains undetermined. In massless quenched sQED, we construct the transverse part of the non perturbative scalar-photon vertex. This construction (i) ensures multiplicative renormalizability (MR) of the scalar propagator in keeping with the Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformations (LKFTs), (ii) has the same transformation properties as the bare vertex under charge conjugation, parity and time reversal, (iii) has no kinematic singularities and (iv) reproduces one loop asymptotic result in the weak coupling regime of the theory.

Structure of the neutral pion and its electromagnetic transition form factor

The $γ^\ast γ\to π^0$ transition form factor, $G(Q^2)$, is computed on the entire domain of spacelike momenta using a continuum approach to the two valence-body bound-state problem in relativistic quantum field theory: the result agrees with data obtained by the CELLO, CLEO and Belle Collaborations. The analysis unifies this prediction with that of the pion's valence-quark parton distribution amplitude (PDA) and elastic electromagnetic form factor, and demonstrates, too, that a fully self-consistent treatment can readily connect a pion PDA that is a broad, concave function at the hadronic scale with the perturbative QCD prediction for the transition form factor in the hard photon limit. The normalisation of that limit is set by the scale of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking, which is a crucial feature of the Standard Model. Understanding of the latter will thus remain incomplete until definitive transition form factor data is available on $Q^2>10\,$GeV$^2$.

Local Gauge Transformation for the Quark Propagator in an SU(N) Gauge Theory

In an SU(N) gauge field theory, the n-point Green functions, namely, propagators and vertices, transform under the simultaneous local gauge variations of the gluon vector potential and the quark matter field in such a manner that the physical observables remain invariant. In this article, we derive this intrinsically non perturbative transformation law for the quark propagator within the system of covariant gauges. We carry out its explicit perturbative expansion till O(g_s^6) and, for some terms, till O(g_s^8). We study the implications of this transformation for the quark-anti-quark condensate, multiplicative renormalizability of the massless quark propagator, as well as its relation with the quark-gluon vertex at the one-loop order. Setting the color factors C_F=1 and C_A=0, Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformation for the abelian case of quantum electrodynamics is trivially recovered.

QCD: Restoration of Chiral Symmetry and Deconfinement for Large N_f

Exploiting the recent lattice results for the infrared gluon propagator with light dynamical quarks, we solve the gap equation for the quark propagator. We thus model the chiral symmetry breaking mechanism with increasing number of flavours and study confinement (intimately tied with the analytic properties of QCD Schwinger functions) order parameters. We obtain, with this approach, clear signals of chiral symmetry restoration and deconfinement when the number of light quark flavors exceeds a critical value of $N_f^c \approx 8 \pm 1$, in agreement with the state-of-the-art direct lattice analysis of chiral symmetry restoration in QCD.

Multiple solutions for the fermion mass function in QED3

Theories that support dynamical generation of a fermion mass gap are of widespread interest. The phenomenon is often studied via the Dyson-Schwinger equation (DSE) for the fermion self energy; i.e., the gap equation. When the rainbow truncation of that equation supports dynamical mass generation, it typically also possesses a countable infinity of simultaneous solutions for the dressed-fermion mass function, solutions which may be ordered by the number of zeros they exhibit. These features can be understood via the theory of nonlinear Hammerstein integral equations. Using QED3 as an example, we demonstrate the existence of a large class of gap equation truncations that possess solutions with damped oscillations. We suggest that there is a larger class, quite probably including the exact theory, which does not. The structure of the dressed-fermion--gauge-boson vertex is an important factor in deciding the issue.

Quark flavour effects on gluon and ghost propagators

We compute the full non-perturbative ghost and gluon two-point Green functions by using gauge field configurations with $\nf=2$ and $\nf=2+1+1$ twisted-mass quark flavours. We use simulations with several different light quark masses, heavy quark masses close to that of the strange and charm quarks, and lightest pseudoscalar masses ranging from 270 to 510 [MeV]. Quark flavour effects on both the gluon and the ghost propagators are then investigated in a wide range of momenta, bridging the deep infrared and intermediate momenta domain of QCD interactions in the presence of dynamical quarks. The ghost-gluon vertex is also indirectly probed through a consistency requirement among the lattice data for the gluon and ghost propagators and the ghost propagator Schwinger-Dyson equation. The effective full QCD coupling is finally constructed, and its dependence on the presence of dynamical fermions scrutinized.

Vacuum Polarization and Dynamical Chiral Symmetry Breaking: Phase Diagram of QED with Four-Fermion Contact Interaction

We study chiral symmetry breaking for fundamental charged fermions coupled electromagnetically to photons with the inclusion of four-fermion contact self-interaction term. We employ multiplicatively renormalizable models for the photon dressing function and the electron-photon vertex which minimally ensures mass anomalous dimension = 1. Vacuum polarization screens the interaction strength. Consequently, the pattern of dynamical mass generation for fermions is characterized by a critical number of massless fermion flavors above which chiral symmetry is restored. This effect is in diametrical opposition to the existence of criticality for the minimum interaction strength necessary to break chiral symmetry dynamically. The presence of virtual fermions dictates the nature of phase transition. Miransky scaling laws for the electromagnetic interaction strength and the four-fermion coupling, observed for quenched QED, are replaced by a mean-field power law behavior corresponding to a second order phase transition. These results are derived analytically by employing the bifurcation analysis, and are later confirmed numerically by solving the original non-linearized gap equation. A three dimensional critical surface is drawn to clearly depict the interplay of the relative strengths of interactions and number of flavors to separate the two phases. We also compute the beta-function and observe that it has ultraviolet fixed point. The power law part of the momentum dependence, describing the mass function, reproduces the quenched limit trivially. We also comment on the continuum limit and the triviality of QED.

Critical Number of Flavours in QED

We demonstrate that in unquenched quantum electrodynamics (QED), chiral symmetry breaking ceases to exist above a critical number of fermion flavours $N_f$. This is a necessary and sufficient consequence of the fact that there exists a critical value of electromagnetic coupling $α$ beyond which dynamical mass generation gets triggered. We employ a multiplicatively renormalizable photon propagator involving leading logarithms to all orders in $α$ to illustrate this. We study the flavour and coupling dependence of the dynamically generated mass analytically as well as numerically. We also derive the scaling laws for the dynamical mass as a function of $α$ and $N_f$. Up to a multiplicative constant, these scaling laws are related through $(α, α_c) \leftrightarrow (1/N_f, 1/N_f^c)$. Calculation of the mass anomalous dimension $γ_m$ shows that it is always greater than its value in the quenched case. We also evaluate the $β$-function. The criticality plane is drawn in the $(α,N_f)$ phase space which clearly depicts how larger $N_f$ is required to restore chiral symmetry for an increasing interaction strength.

Dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and the fermion--gauge-boson vertex

We present a workable model for the fermion-photon vertex, which is expressed solely in terms of functions that appear in the fermion propagator and independent of the angle between the relative momenta, and does not explicitly depend on the covariant-gauge parameter. It nevertheless produces a critical coupling for dynamical chiral symmetry breaking that is practically independent of the covariant-gauge parameter and an anomalous magnetic moment distribution for the dressed fermion that agrees in important respects with realistic numerical solutions of the inhomogeneous vector Bethe-Salpeter equation.

pi- and rho-mesons, and their diquark partners, from a contact interaction

We present a unified Dyson-Schwinger equation treatment of static and electromagnetic properties of pseudoscalar and vector mesons, and scalar and axial-vector diquark correlations, based upon a vector-vector contact-interaction. A basic motivation for this study is the need to document a comparison between the electromagnetic form factors of mesons and those diquarks which play a material role in nucleon structure. This is an important step toward a unified description of meson and baryon form factors based on a single interaction. A notable result, therefore, is the large degree of similarity between related meson and diquark form factors. The simplicity of the interaction enables computation of the form factors at arbitrarily-large spacelike-Q^2, which enables us to expose a zero in the rho-meson electric form factor at z_Q^ρ~ Sqrt[6] m_ρ. Notably, r_ρ*z_Q^ρ~ r_D*z_Q^D, where r_ρ, r_D are, respectively, the electric radii of the rho-meson and deuteron.

Abelian anomaly and neutral pion production

We show that in fully-self-consistent treatments of the pion; namely, its static properties and elastic and transition form factors, the asymptotic limit of the product Q^2 G_{γ* γπ^0}(Q^2), determined a priori by the interaction employed, is not exceeded at any finite value of spacelike momentum transfer. Furthermore, in such a treatment of a vector-vector contact-interaction one obtains a γ* γ-> π^0 transition form factor that disagrees markedly with all available data. We explain that the contact interaction produces a pion distribution amplitude which is flat and nonvanishing at the endpoints. This amplitude characterises a pointlike pion bound-state. Such a state has the hardest possible form factors; i.e., form factors which become constant at large momentum transfers and hence are in striking disagreement with completed experiments. On the other hand, interactions with QCD-like behaviour produce soft pions, a valence-quark distribution amplitude that vanishes as ~(1-x)^2 for x~1, and results that agree with the bulk of existing data. Our analysis supports a view that the large-Q^2 data obtained by the BaBar Collaboration is not an accurate measure of the γ* γ-> π^0 form factor.

Pion form factor from a contact interaction

In a Poincare'-covariant vector-boson-exchange theory, the pion possesses components of pseudovector origin, which materially influence its observable properties. For a range of such quantities, we explore the consequences of a momentum-independent interaction, regularised in a symmetry-preserving manner. The contact interaction, whilst capable of describing pion static properties, produces a form factor whose: evolution for Q^2>0.17GeV^2 disagrees markedly with experiment; and asymptotic power-law behaviour conflicts strongly with perturbative-QCD.

The anapole moment in scalar quantum electrodynamics

The anapole moment of a charged scalar particle is studied in a model independent fashion, using the effective Lagrangian technique, as well as radiatively within the context of scalar quantum electrodynamics (SQED). It is shown that this gauge structure is characterized by a non renormalizable interaction, which is radiatively generated at the one--loop. It is found that the resulting anapole moment for off-shell particles, though free of ultraviolet divergences, is gauge dependent and thus it is not a physical observable. We also study some of its kinematical limits. In particular, it is shown that its value comes out to be zero when all particles are on--shell.

On the Compton scattering vertex for massive scalar QED

We investigate the Compton scattering vertex of charged scalars and photons in scalar quantum electrodynamics (SQED). We carry out its non perturbative construction consistent with Ward-Fradkin-Green-Takahashi identity (WFGTI) which relates 3-point vertices to the 4-point ones. There is an undetermined part which is transverse to one or both the external photons, and needs to be evaluated through perturbation theory. We present in detail how the transverse part at the 1-loop order can be evaluated for completely general kinematics of momenta involved in covariant gauges and dimensions. This involves the calculation of genuine 4-point functions with three massive propagators, the most non-trivial integrals reported in this paper. We also discuss possible applications of our results.

The nonperturbative propagator and vertex in massless quenched QED_d

It is well known how multiplicative renormalizability of the fermion propagator, through its Schwinger-Dyson equation, imposes restrictions on the 3-point fermion-boson vertex in massless quenched quantum electrodynamics in 4-dimensions (QED$_4$). Moreover, perturbation theory serves as an excellent guide for possible nonperturbative constructions of Green functions. We extend these ideas to arbitrary dimensions $d$. The constraint of multiplicative renormalizability of the fermion propagator is generalized to a Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformation law in $d$-dimensions and it naturally leads to a constraint on the fermion-boson vertex. We verify that this constraint is satisfied in perturbation theory at the one loop level in 3-dimensions. Based upon one loop perturbative calculation of the vertex, we find additional restrictions on its possible nonperturbative forms in arbitrary dimensions.
