Optical probing of magnons and phonons in Ni80Fe20 nanodot arrays

Control of collective spin excitations by static or dynamic strain is an emerging phenomenon that requires in-depth understanding for design of future spin-wave-regulated devices. Here, we explore mutually interacting spin waves and acoustic wave modes in addition to few non-interactive modes through all optical excitation in ordered arrays of Ni80Fe20 nanomagnets. The acoustic wave originated from elastic deformation resonantly couple to the spin wave via magnetoelastic effect at their overlapping frequency. We demonstrate that the choice of the lattice type in which the magnetic nanodots are arranged is crucial for the observation of the magnetoelastic interaction. Therefore, the study shows that the simultaneous existence of elastic wave and spin wave offer ingeneously advantageous features to pave the way of energy-efficient magnetoacoustic devices.

Edge localization of spin waves in antidot multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy

We study the spin-wave dynamics in nanoscale antidot lattices based on Co/Pd multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Using time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements we demonstrate that the variation of the antidot shape introduces significant change in the spin-wave spectra, especially in the lower frequency range. By employing micromagnetic simulations we show that additional peaks observed in the measured spectra are related to narrow shell regions around the antidots, where the magnetic anisotropy is reduced due to the Ga+ ion irradiation during the focused ion beam milling process of the antidot fabrication. The results point at new possibilities for exploitation of localized spin waves in out-of-plane magnetized thin films, which are easily tunable and suitable for magnonics applications.

Landau damping effects on dust-acoustic solitary waves in a dusty negative-ion plasma

The nonlinear theory of dust-acoustic waves (DAWs) with Landau damping is studied in an unmagnetized dusty negative-ion plasma in the extreme conditions when the free electrons are absent. The cold massive charged dusts are described by fluid equations, whereas the two-species of ions (positive and negative) are described by the kinetic Vlasov equations. A Korteweg de-Vries (KdV) equation with Landau damping, governing the dynamics of weakly nonlinear and weakly dispersive DAWs, is derived following Ott and Sudan [Phys. Fluids {\bf 12}, 2388 (1969)]. It is shown that for some typical laboratory and space plasmas, the Landau damping (and the nonlinear) effects are more pronounced than the finite Debye length (dispersive) effects for which the KdV soliton theory is not applicable to DAWs in dusty pair-ion plasmas. The properties of the linear phase velocity, solitary wave amplitudes (in presence and absence of the Landau damping) as well as the Landau damping rate are studied with the effects of the positive ion to dust density ratio $(μ_{pd})$ as well as the ratios of positive to negative ion temperatures $(σ)$ and masses $(m)$.

Effect of Hole Shape on Spin-Wave Band Structure in One-Dimensional Magnonic Antidot Waveguide

We present the possibility of tuning the spin-wave band structure, particularly the bandgaps in a nanoscale magnonic antidot waveguide by varying the shape of the antidots. The effects of changing the shape of the antidots on the spin-wave dispersion relation in a waveguide have been carefully monitored. We interpret the observed variations by analysing the equilibrium magnetic configuration and the magnonic power and phase distribution profiles during spin-wave dynamics. The inhomogeneity in the exchange fields at the antidot boundaries within the waveguide is found to play a crucial role in controlling the band structure at the discussed length scales. The observations recorded here will be important for future developments of magnetic antidot based magnonic crystals and waveguides.

Intrinsic and extrinsic mirror symmetry breaking in anti-dot spin-wave waveguides

We theoretically study the spin-wave spectra in magnonic waveguides periodically patterned with square anti-dots in nanoscale with pinned magnetization at the edges. We show that the breaking of the mirror symmetry of the waveguide by the structural changes can result in a magnonic band gap closing. These intrinsic symmetry breaking can be compensated by properly chosen asymmetric external bias magnetic field, i.e. in an extrinsic way. As a result the magnonic gaps existing in the ideal symmetric structure can be recovered. The model used for the explanation also suggests that this idea could be generic both for exchange and dipolar interaction regimes of spin-waves and also for other types of waves, e.g., electrons in the graphene ribbons.

Magnonic Band Structure, Complete Bandgap and Collective Spin Wave Excitation in Nanoscale Two--Dimensional Magnonic Crystals

We present the observation of a complete bandgap and collective spin wave excitation in two-dimensional magnonic crystals comprised of arrays of nanoscale antidots and nanodots, respectively. Considering that the frequencies dealt with here fall in the microwave band, these findings can be used for the development of suitable magnonic metamaterials and spin wave based signal processing. We also present the application of a numerical procedure, to compute the dispersion relations of spin waves for any high symmetry direction in the first Brillouin zone. The results obtained from this procedure has been reproduced and verified by the well established plane wave method for an antidot lattice, when magnetization dynamics at antidot boundaries is pinned. The micromagnetic simulation based method can also be used to obtain iso--frequency countours of spin waves. Iso--frequency contours are analougous of the Fermi surfaces and hence, they have the potential to radicalize our understanding of spin wave dynamics. The physical origin of bands, partial and full magnonic bandgaps has been explained by plotting the spatial distribution of spin wave energy spectral density. Although, unfettered by rigid assumptions and approximations, which afflict most analytical methods used in the study of spin wave dynamics, micromagnetic simulations tend to be computationally demanding. Thus, the observation of collective spin wave excitation in the case of nanodot arrays, which can obviate the need to perform simulations may also prove to be valuable.

Tunable Magnonic Frequency and Damping in [Co/Pd]8 Multilayers with Variable Co Layer Thickness

We report the experimental observation of collective picosecond magnetization dynamics in [Co/Pd]8 multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The precession frequency shows large and systematic variation from about 5 GHz to about 90 GHz with the decrease in the Co layer thickness from 1.0 nm to 0.22 nm due to the linear increase in the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The damping coefficient 'alpha' is found to be inversely proportional to the Co layer thickness and a linear relation between the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and 'alpha' is established. We discuss the possible reasons behind the enhanced damping as the d-d hybridization at the interface and spin pumping. These observations are significant for the applications of these materials in spintronics and magnonic crystals.
