Recursion operators and bi-Hamiltonian structure of the general heavenly equation

We discover two additional Lax pairs and three nonlocal recursion operators for symmetries of the general heavenly equation introduced by Doubrov and Ferapontov. Converting the equation to a two-component form, we obtain Lagrangian and Hamiltonian structures of the two-component general heavenly system. We study all point symmetries of the two-component system and, using the inverse Noether theorem in the Hamiltonian form, obtain all the integrals of motion corresponding to each variational (Noether) symmetry. We discover that in the two-component form we have only a single nonlocal recursion operator. Composing the recursion operator with the first Hamiltonian operator we obtain second Hamiltonian operator. We check the Jacobi identities for the second Hamiltonian operator and compatibility of the two Hamiltonian structures using P. Olver's theory of functional multi-vectors. Our well-founded conjecture is that P. Olver's method works fine for nonlocal operators. We show that the general heavenly equation in the two-component form is a bi-Hamiltonian system integrable in the sense of Magri. We demonstrate how to obtain nonlocal Hamiltonian flows generated by local Hamiltonians by using formal adjoint recursion operator.

General heavenly equation governs anti-self-dual gravity

We show that the general heavenly equation, suggested recently by Doubrov and Ferapontov \cite{fer}, governs anti-self-dual (ASD) gravity. We derive ASD Ricci-flat vacuum metric governed by the general heavenly equation, null tetrad and basis of 1-forms for this metric. We present algebraic exact solutions of the general heavenly equation as a set of zeros of homogeneous polynomials in independent and dependent variables. A real solution is obtained for the case of neutral signature.

On a class of second-order PDEs admitting partner symmetries

Recently we have demonstrated how to use partner symmetries for obtaining noninvariant solutions of heavenly equations of Plebanski that govern heavenly gravitational metrics. In this paper, we present a class of scalar second-order PDEs with four variables, that possess partner symmetries and contain only second derivatives of the unknown. We present a general form of such a PDE together with recursion relations between partner symmetries. This general PDE is transformed to several simplest canonical forms containing the two heavenly equations of Plebanski among them and two other nonlinear equations which we call mixed heavenly equation and asymmetric heavenly equation. On an example of the mixed heavenly equation, we show how to use partner symmetries for obtaining noninvariant solutions of PDEs by a lift from invariant solutions. Finally, we present Ricci-flat self-dual metrics governed by solutions of the mixed heavenly equation and its Legendre transform.

Lift of Invariant to Non-Invariant Solutions of Complex Monge-Ampère Equations

We show how partner symmetries of the elliptic and hyperbolic complex Monge-Ampère equations (CMA and HCMA) provide a lift of non-invariant solutions of three- and two-dimensional reduced equations, i.e., a lift of invariant solutions of the original CMA and HCMA equations, to non-invariant solutions of the latter four-dimensional equations. The lift is applied to non-invariant solutions of the two-dimensional Helmholtz equation to yield non-invariant solutions of CMA, and to non-invariant solutions of three-dimensional wave equation and three-dimensional hyperbolic Boyer-Finley equation to yield non-invariant solutions of HCMA. By using these solutions as metric potentials, it is possible to construct four-dimensional Ricci-flat metrics of Euclidean and ultra-hyperbolic signatures that have non-zero curvature tensors and no Killing vectors.
